Playing a prerecorded video does not, by itself, invalidate a YouTube Live stream key. Check that your encoder is sending to the intended stream’s current key and server URL in YouTube Studio. If the error mentions SSL, timeout, or connection failure, check the URL and protocol separately from the key.
Fix the key and connection in the right order
- Open the intended stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Create → Go Live, then select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream key shown there and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field. YouTube recommends copying the key from Live Control Room when a third-party encoder reports an error starting. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide
- Replace a stale or compromised key. In Live Control Room, reset the key and update the encoder with the newly generated value. Resetting alone will not help if the encoder continues using the old saved key. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. Manage live stream settings
- Check the server URL independently. The stream key identifies the credential; the server URL tells the encoder where to send the feed. Verify both against the selected stream’s settings rather than assuming a correct key makes the destination correct. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Match the URL to the protocol. If you selected RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error or timeout, YouTube advises checking the protocol and server; for certain SSL errors it suggests trying port 443. Do not switch protocols as a generic key fix. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview. Start the encoder and confirm its feed appears in Live Control Room before selecting Go live. Test ahead of time and monitor stream health rather than waiting until the event. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting
What changes when the video is prerecorded?
The recording is input to the encoder; the key remains a YouTube stream setting used by that encoder. The initial checks are still the current key, destination URL, and protocol. Because file playback varies between encoder applications, verify that the software is sending the file as a live encoder feed—not starting a separate upload or a different platform integration workflow. YouTube’s general encoder setup does not establish that every application’s file-playback mode works identically.
Identify the failure from the symptoms
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication or key error; no preview | Wrong stream’s key, stale saved key, or a key that was reset without updating the encoder | Copy the key for the intended stream, or reset it and replace the saved value in the encoder. |
| SSL, timeout, or connection error | Server URL, RTMP/RTMPS selection, encoder protocol support, or outbound connection | Use the URL that matches the selected protocol; for certain SSL errors, try port 443 as YouTube suggests. |
| The program logs into YouTube rather than asking for a stream key | The application’s direct YouTube authentication integration | Contact the software provider; key-field instructions may not apply to that login workflow. |
| The encoder connects but the video does not appear correctly | Encoder health, file playback configuration, or outbound internet connection | Check encoder errors, confirm the file is being sent as a live feed, and test the outbound connection. |
| YouTube says the channel cannot stream live | Channel restriction, separate from whether the key is valid | Review the channel’s live-streaming status. YouTube says a restricted channel cannot bypass the restriction by streaming from another channel. Get started with live streaming |
Only review encoder quality settings if the connection is established
Bitrate, resolution, codec, and keyframe interval are not first-line fixes for a rejected credential. If the key and destination are correct but the feed still has encoder or stream-health errors, check the settings supported by your selected protocol and encoder. For RTMP, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube encoder settings and recommendations
YouTube also supports HLS ingestion for some use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. HLS requires a compatible encoder and an HLS-configured stream key, and YouTube notes that it has higher latency than RTMP. Do not repurpose an RTMP key or URL for HLS without configuring the stream accordingly. Set up an HLS stream

When the key and URL look right but the error remains
Before changing unrelated settings, collect the details that distinguish authentication from connection trouble: the exact error text, encoder name and version, whether the stream is scheduled or reused, selected protocol, whether a preview appears, and any channel restriction notice. Update the encoder if appropriate, then test and monitor stream health in advance. These details are also what the encoder provider will need if the failure is in its integration.
