There is no evidence-based universal cost winner between Amazon EC2 and Hetzner Cloud for a 24/7 YouTube channel. The right choice depends on the server’s job, region, compute needs, transfer charges, and how you will recover from failures. For a simple setup that sends one live feed to YouTube, compare the cost of that ingest-only server—not the cost of delivering the stream to every viewer.
First, define what the server does
A 24/7 channel can mean very different workloads. A cloud server might encode video, relay an already encoded feed to YouTube, or participate in a system that delivers video directly to viewers. Those designs have different compute and bandwidth requirements, so “EC2 versus Hetzner” is not a complete cost scenario by itself.
Ingest-only: one feed goes to YouTube
In a basic arrangement, an encoder or relay on the server continuously sends one feed to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. Assuming the VM is not also serving viewers through a separate distribution service, its outbound stream traffic is therefore not multiplied by the channel’s audience size.
Viewer delivery: the server or a CDN serves the audience
If your own server or a content delivery network distributes the video to viewers, audience traffic becomes a separate cost driver. AWS describes a broader live-video architecture using MediaLive, MediaStore or MediaPackage, and CloudFront. That is not equivalent to an EC2 VM that only sends an ingest feed to YouTube, and it should be priced as a distinct design.

Amazon EC2 vs Hetzner Cloud: what to compare
| Factor | Amazon EC2 | Hetzner Cloud | What it means for a 24/7 channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server role | Can run an encoder or relay; AWS also offers separate media and delivery services. | Can run an encoder or relay on a Cloud Server. | Compare like with like. Do not compare an EC2-only ingest host with an AWS media-and-CDN pipeline as though they were the same product. |
| Compute fit | Depends on the selected instance, operating system, and whether it must encode in real time. | Depends on the selected server and whether it must encode in real time. | No benchmark here establishes that specific EC2 and Hetzner plans perform equivalently. Encoding demand depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; a relay that does not re-encode is a different workload. |
| Outbound traffic | AWS’s pricing page describes 100 GB per month of internet data transfer out free in aggregate across eligible services and regions, subject to exclusions. The retrieved Ohio pricing table lists $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB per month, then lower rates at higher tiers. | Hetzner advertises included traffic, but the available comparison does not establish a matched allowance and price for your exact region and plan. | Check the current regional terms and calculate the same monthly transfer for both providers. AWS’s free allowance is not 100 GB for every instance. |
| Availability commitment | A comparable EC2 service commitment is not established here. | Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer agreement describes a 99.9% monthly Cloud Server availability effort per individual server, subject to its definitions and exclusions. | A server availability commitment is not an end-to-end promise that YouTube will receive an uninterrupted stream. |
| Managed live delivery | AWS documents a 24/7 live-channel architecture using MediaLive, MediaStore or MediaPackage, and CloudFront; these add services and costs beyond EC2. | No equivalent managed architecture is established by the available information. | Choose managed media and CDN services only if your design needs them; a YouTube ingest feed may not. |
Which cloud is cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
You cannot determine that from the provider names alone. EC2 charges vary by instance, operating system, region, and runtime, and internet transfer out can be an additional charge. AWS describes a 100 GB monthly transfer-out allowance aggregated across eligible services and regions, with China and GovCloud exclusions. In the retrieved Ohio pricing table, outbound internet transfer is $0.09/GB for the first 10 TB per month, $0.085/GB for the next 40 TB, $0.07/GB for the following 100 TB, and $0.05/GB above 150 TB. Those are Ohio table rates, not a global quote; check current regional pricing before choosing.
Hetzner advertises included traffic and a 99.9% uptime promise for its cloud product. Its traffic-cost comparison is based on independent data from Sparecores, but it is not a matched quote for a particular reader’s region, server size, or monthly usage. Confirm the terms for the Cloud Server you intend to use rather than treating an advertised comparison as your own bill.

Build a fair monthly estimate
- Pin down the region and server size. Select the same practical CPU and memory capacity, storage, and operating system for each provider. The best region depends on where the source is, your operational requirements, the YouTube ingest path, and whether a separate service delivers video to viewers. No regional latency comparison is established here.
- Decide whether the VM encodes. If it re-encodes video, account for the codec, resolution, and frame rate when sizing CPU or GPU capacity. If it only relays an already encoded feed, do not assume encoding-level compute requirements. No specific EC2 or Hetzner plan is benchmarked for either job here.
- Estimate the continuous feed’s traffic. For a constant bitrate, an approximate decimal monthly transfer is bitrate in megabits per second × 0.45 × hours streamed. For example, a 12 Mbps stream sent continuously for a 30-day month is about 3.89 TB before audio and protocol overhead: 12 × 0.45 × 720 = 3,888 GB. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a provider quote.
- Apply the provider’s actual allowance and rate. For AWS, account for the shared eligible 100 GB allowance and the applicable regional transfer tiers. For Hetzner, verify the included-traffic terms and any charge that applies to your selected plan and region.
- Add storage and recovery costs. Include the disk needed for source files or playlists, monitoring, any backup or failover arrangement, and any managed media or CDN services in a viewer-delivery design.
- Compare the same runtime. A channel expected to run continuously should be estimated for the same monthly hours on both providers, including any minimum billing or plan conditions shown at checkout.
AWS’s live-streaming guide gives an illustrative US East (N. Virginia) estimate of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour, 1,000-viewer SD-540p event: about $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of CloudFront delivery. That example is for an AWS-managed viewer-delivery architecture, not an EC2-to-YouTube ingest feed; it illustrates why distribution costs can dominate when a host serves viewers.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube live stream use?
For an ingest-only server, estimate its outbound traffic from the stream bitrate and operating time, then allow for audio and protocol overhead. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streams, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Its suggested bitrate depends on the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the applicable row rather than choosing a value by guesswork.

For H.264, YouTube’s table gives these examples: 1080p at 60 fps, 12 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps; 720p at 60 fps, 6 Mbps; and 720p at 30 fps, 4 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended settings for those specific rows, not a promise about quality or a universal bandwidth requirement. At 12 Mbps, a continuously pushed stream uses roughly 3.89 TB in a 30-day month before overhead; other bitrates scale proportionally.
Use YouTube’s settings on either provider
EC2 and Hetzner do not change YouTube’s ingest requirements. Configure the encoder for the stream profile you actually intend to send:

- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate encoding and the bitrate recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate and resolution: YouTube’s guidance allows up to 60 fps. Match the bitrate to the corresponding row for your selected output rather than assuming that higher resolution alone determines the right setting.
Before committing to a 24/7 schedule, test with representative motion and audio, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages during a test stream. A running process or an available VM does not, by itself, prove that the stream is healthy at YouTube.

Hetzner’s published 99.9% figure is a monthly Cloud Server availability effort defined by its Cloud and vServer Service Agreement. It is measured per Cloud Server and subject to that agreement’s definitions and exclusions. It should not be read as a guarantee that a complete broadcast—from your media process through the network to YouTube—will never fail. A comparable EC2 commitment is not established here.

Whichever host you use, plan recovery separately from the provider’s server commitment. Monitor both the encoder or relay process and YouTube’s stream health; arrange for the process to restart after an exit or reboot, and decide how you will respond if the VM, source media, or network path is unavailable. If you require failover, account for the second server and the operational steps needed to switch the feed; do not assume that having two cloud providers automatically makes a working failover.
Can you run a YouTube livestream from a cloud server?
Yes. A cloud VM can run an encoder or relay that sends a continuous feed to YouTube, provided the chosen machine can sustain the workload and the stream is configured to YouTube’s requirements. You must still supply the video source, store or access the media, configure the stream key securely, and monitor the stream. A VM is a flexible do-it-yourself route, but it leaves sizing, software, restarts, monitoring, and provider billing to you.
Which should you choose?
- Consider EC2 if you want to build around AWS and may need its separate media or delivery services. Price the actual service graph rather than assuming that an EC2 instance includes a complete streaming platform.
- Consider Hetzner Cloud if its available region, server configuration, and included-traffic terms fit your ingest-only workload. Verify the exact plan and the agreement that applies to it.
- Choose only after a pinned estimate if cost is decisive. Match region, CPU and memory, disk, operating system, runtime, stream bitrate, monthly transfer, and recovery design; then compare provider checkout prices and traffic terms.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a more direct alternative to managing an EC2 or Hetzner VM: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
