To move a continuous YouTube FFmpeg stream to DigitalOcean, recreate the encoder on a new Droplet, test it before switching over, then cut traffic or control references to the new host. If your current VPS is already a DigitalOcean Droplet, the documented route is to snapshot it and create a new Droplet from that snapshot. For a VPS at another provider, plan a file-level transfer or clean rebuild; the reviewed DigitalOcean documentation does not establish a one-click import for arbitrary third-party images.
Do not shut down the old VPS until the new process survives a restart and YouTube Live Control Room reports a healthy stream. A host migration does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast, so plan the encoder handoff deliberately.
Choose the right migration path

For a DigitalOcean-to-DigitalOcean move, the snapshot preserves the disk as of the time it was taken, not subsequent changes. For either route, inventory the running service first so you know what must be restored.
1. Record how the current stream works
Before copying files or taking a snapshot, document the actual working setup. This is an operational checklist, not an FFmpeg-specific DigitalOcean procedure.

- The FFmpeg command or configuration, including input, output endpoint, codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval.
- How the input is accessed: local media, a remote source, and any authentication or environment variables it needs.
- How the process is supervised, such as its service manager or other restart mechanism; record its boot behavior.
- Where service files, scripts, media, logs and environment files are stored.
- Any domain name, DNS record, control panel or other reference that points to the old public IP address.
Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret. Avoid placing it in public examples, shared notes or logs. YouTube lets an authorized channel owner or manager reset a key; if it was exposed during the move, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. YouTube Help: manage live stream settings
2. Create the destination Droplet
For an existing DigitalOcean Droplet
- Take an on-demand snapshot of the source Droplet using DigitalOcean’s snapshot workflow.
- Create a new Droplet from that snapshot. Choose the intended region and size; DigitalOcean documents that a snapshot can be used to create a Droplet in a different region.
- Keep the original Droplet available. A matching filesystem does not prove that the stream service, network access or boot configuration works on the new host.
DigitalOcean says the new Droplet’s filesystem data and organization should be identical to the original. It also advises testing services after migration because expected services may not be set to start at boot. Read the snapshot migration guidance.

For a VPS at another provider
Do not assume that a provider’s disk image can be imported directly. Confirm the supported transfer method for the source operating system and image format before starting. If direct import is unavailable, provision a clean Droplet and restore the FFmpeg configuration, scripts, media and other required files. Reinstall or recreate dependencies as needed, then validate the service as if it were a new installation.
Size and secure the destination
There is no universal Droplet size for a 24/7 FFmpeg stream. Select one based on the workload you actually observe: CPU and memory use, input handling, encoding settings and sustained outbound bandwidth. Monitor the destination during a representative test before retiring the old host.

DigitalOcean recommends SSH key authentication, a non-root sudo user, monitoring, backups and a cloud firewall. Its suggested firewall baseline allows inbound SSH and outbound traffic. Because the encoder sends the stream out to YouTube, check both the cloud firewall and the host firewall if you use custom egress restrictions. 3. Restore and test the FFmpeg service
- Restore the service files and configuration from the snapshot or your transfer, or reproduce them on a clean Droplet. Confirm FFmpeg and any dependencies are installed.
- Check that the process can read its input, resolve the YouTube ingest endpoint, and authenticate with the protected stream key.
- Start the service under its normal supervisor. Confirm it remains running and inspect its logs for input, connection or encoding errors.
- Reboot the Droplet and confirm the service starts and reconnects as intended. A process that works when launched manually may not be configured to start at boot.
- Run a test stream and check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room before switching production traffic.
Verify the YouTube encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes. Its bitrate recommendations vary with codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. That example is specific to that format and frame rate, not a universal value. Choose settings that match your stream and the destination’s sustainable outbound capacity. 4. Cut over without losing your rollback option
- When possible, bring up the destination and validate it before changing DNS or other references to the old IP.
- Coordinate the encoder handoff. Avoid having two encoders send to the same live event unintentionally; the exact handoff depends on how your event and service are configured.
- Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that the intended stream is healthy, then update DNS or other references that still point to the old host.
- Keep the original VPS and, where applicable, the snapshot during a verification period. Remove them only after you have confirmed the destination behaves as expected.
DNS changes may take time to be observed by clients, depending on your configuration. Keep the old host available during that interval if any part of your workflow still depends on its address. DigitalOcean also recommends retaining the original Droplet and snapshots during testing so you can recover if the migration fails. DigitalOcean snapshot migration guidance

Cost and operational trade-offs
A snapshot preserves a DigitalOcean Droplet’s disk state and can reduce rebuilding, but the destination still needs service, firewall, boot and stream testing. Moving from another provider may require more manual restoration, depending on source compatibility. In either case, weigh the new Droplet’s ongoing hosting cost against the CPU, memory, storage and outbound bandwidth the stream actually needs. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal Droplet size or a migration cost for this workload.
