The server does not upload a video file as a normal YouTube upload: it must keep an encoded live connection running. Before committing to 24/7 operation, confirm that your specific Hetzner server, network route, traffic terms, and encoder setup can support it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours; its minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling.
- Video and audio you have permission to broadcast as a live stream. Confirm that your rights cover continuous live rebroadcast, worldwide availability, and any music in the material.
- An encoder that runs on the server’s operating system, reads and loops or schedules media, and can send to YouTube over RTMPS or another supported ingest method.
- A Hetzner server with sufficient sustained outbound capacity and suitable current terms for your intended continuous traffic. The server offer and location matter; do not assume that a short speed test or a generic host specification proves 24/7 suitability.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes software encoders, including OBS, and explains that an encoder converts video into a format YouTube can stream.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Use the intended title, description, audience setting, and visibility before you go live.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. The URL is the ingest destination; the key authorizes the encoder to send to it. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in shared logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose the event’s latency and other available options to suit your use. For a prerecorded channel that does not depend on live chat interaction, standard latency is often a reasonable starting point; confirm the current options and implications in Live Control Room.
Choose an encoder and configure the stream
Encoder choice
Use software that can run unattended on the exact server OS and can play your files in sequence or on a loop. OBS is one option named by YouTube, but verify that the build, media playback method, and any scheduling or restart mechanism suit your server. Compare candidates on unattended operation, file and playlist handling, audio/video synchronization, RTMPS support, and restart or failover behavior. These are selection criteria, not a claim that a particular application has been tested on Hetzner hardware.
Standard RTMPS settings
For an ordinary YouTube Live workflow, use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends this encrypted RTMP variant. Select the YouTube or RTMPS destination in the encoder, or enter the RTMPS ingest URL supplied in Live Control Room, then provide the event’s stream key. Follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings rather than relying on a bitrate copied from an unrelated setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Video codec: H.264 for standard RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps, with resolution and bitrate matched to the source and YouTube’s current table.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate: Choose it from YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate. There is no single correct bitrate for every channel.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into playback formats for viewers, so the bitrate you send is not a promise that every viewer will receive that exact rendition.
When HLS may be relevant
YouTube also supports HLS for certain cases, including HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP. HLS has higher latency and stricter segment and rolling-playlist requirements. Use it only when the encoder and content need that path; it is not automatically better for a straightforward prerecorded loop. See YouTube’s protocol and encoder guidance for current compatibility details.

Prepare the media loop and server process
- Organize only licensed, ready-to-broadcast media into the playlist or playback sequence. Check every file’s video format, frame rate, audio track, and duration before relying on it unattended.
- Configure the encoder to play the sequence continuously or according to your schedule. Confirm what it does at the end of the playlist, when a file is missing, and after a playback or encoder error.
- Set the outbound video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate deliberately. Avoid increasing output settings beyond what the source can usefully provide; a higher encoder setting cannot restore detail that is absent from the source.
- Arrange for the encoder to launch after a server restart and decide how you will detect and recover from a stopped process. Use a service manager or other restart mechanism appropriate to the server OS, and verify its behavior with a controlled restart before depending on it.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and support posts. Restrict access to configuration files and logs that could contain it.
There is no single command that is safe to prescribe for every Hetzner server: the operating system, encoder, media playlist, and restart mechanism determine the correct configuration. Follow the selected encoder’s documentation and validate the full chain on the exact server you plan to use.
Check bandwidth and validate the stream
Size the server connection for the encoded output, not the source file size. YouTube advises leaving roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; that is operational guidance, not a guarantee against interruptions. If you send a backup feed as well, include its bitrate in the total. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend monitoring stream quality.

- Check the current network and traffic terms for the exact Hetzner product, server location, and intended use. The suitability of a particular offer is not established here; verify it with the current host documentation before purchase.
- Run a private or unlisted test using the same resolution, bitrate, media motion, and audio expected in production.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then open the watch page on another device or connection to confirm that viewers can receive the stream.
- Listen for audio problems and check video/audio synchronization, playlist transitions, and whether playback repeats as intended.
- If you have configured a backup encoder or feed, test the failover deliberately. Do not assume it works because the primary stream works.
- Monitor the production stream and the encoder process. A dedicated server can remove the need to keep a home computer online, but it does not eliminate encoder failures, network interruptions, or YouTube ingest problems.
Copyright, live-stream rules, and monetization
Confirm the rights for a live rebroadcast
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of Live Content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights. A license that permits an ordinary on-demand upload may not cover continuous live rebroadcast. Check the actual license scope for the specific use, including public-performance and other applicable music rights, and follow YouTube Community Guidelines and relevant law.
Streaming successfully does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and evaluate a channel as a whole. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its “inauthentic content” policy to address repetitive or mass-produced content; the update did not change its reused-content policy. Content with little original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value may affect eligibility. A prerecorded livestream is not automatically disallowed or automatically monetizable: originality, variation, value, and channel-level policy compliance matter.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the current event’s ingest URL and stream key, and that the event is live or ready to receive the feed. Reset an exposed or suspect key, then update the encoder.
- Stream health reports instability: Compare the encoded bitrate with sustained outbound capacity from the server, reduce output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and retain YouTube’s recommended headroom. Check the server’s network route and current host terms rather than relying on a home connection test.
- Video appears but has no sound: Confirm the intended audio track is enabled, uses AAC or MP3 for standard RTMP/RTMPS, and is not muted in the encoder or media player.
- Audio and video drift apart: Test the source files and encoder settings individually, then validate a complete playlist transition. Mixed or problematic source formats can complicate synchronization.
- The loop stops after one pass: Check the playlist’s repeat or schedule behavior and the encoder’s response to end-of-file. Test from the final item back to the first before running unattended.
- The stream ends after a process or server restart: Confirm the encoder’s startup and restart mechanism is enabled and that it reconnects to the correct event. Review logs without exposing the stream key.
- HLS setup is more complicated than expected: Confirm that HLS is needed for the codec or HDR use case, then check the encoder’s segment and rolling-playlist requirements. For a conventional setup, RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure path.
