How to Stream Live Video Reliably with AWS Elemental Link and Amazon IVS

Elemental Link is a MediaLive source, not a documented direct IVS encoder. Here’s how to plan the workflow, validate the IVS handoff, choose ingest settings, and troubleshoot interruptions.

Use AWS Elemental Link as the camera or production source for AWS Elemental MediaLive, then configure and verify a downstream handoff from MediaLive to Amazon IVS. Link is documented as a MediaLive source—not as a direct IVS encoder—and the exact MediaLive-to-IVS output configuration is not established here. Treat that handoff as a design to validate against current AWS documentation and test before relying on it for a live event.

How the Link-to-IVS workflow fits together

Think of the workflow as three stages: capture, processing, and delivery. Elemental Link sends a live source to MediaLive over an AWS-managed secure connection. MediaLive ingests and transcodes that source, then sends configured outputs to downstream systems. Amazon IVS accepts a broadcaster’s video ingest over supported protocols and distributes the stream to viewers.

  • Source: Elemental Link HD is for HD sources; Link UHD supports HD and UHD sources. AWS also documents Link UHD as a source for a MediaConnect flow.
  • Processing: MediaLive receives the Link input and processes it according to the channel configuration.
  • Destination: IVS has its own ingest endpoints, accepted protocols, and channel settings. Confirm that the MediaLive output you intend to use is compatible with the selected IVS channel and ingest protocol.

AWS documentation reviewed for this workflow does not establish a specific MediaLive output group, destination URL, or complete tested configuration for sending Link-fed MediaLive output to IVS. Do not treat the handoff as plug-and-play: validate the current service options and test ingest, playback, and recovery before production.

Prepare the Link device and MediaLive input

  1. Choose the source device. Match the Link model to the incoming source: Link HD for HD, or Link UHD for HD or UHD. Confirm the device, MediaLive input, and channel are planned for the appropriate AWS Region.
  2. Connect and power the device. Connect the camera or production equipment to Link, connect Link to the network, and power it on. AWS advises operators typically to have the device sending video before attaching its input to a MediaLive channel.
  3. Create the MediaLive input. In the AWS Elemental MediaLive console, create an Elemental Link input and select the device. AWS console labels can change, so check the current MediaLive input workflow if the names differ.
  4. Attach the input to a channel. Select the Link input as the channel’s source, then configure the channel’s processing and output stages for the intended destination.
  5. Confirm source health before downstream testing. Verify that MediaLive is receiving the expected picture and sound before troubleshooting IVS. This separates source or Link problems from output, network, and ingest problems.

Plan and validate the MediaLive-to-IVS handoff

MediaLive’s role is to ingest and transcode; its configured output must then reach an IVS ingest endpoint using a protocol and configuration supported by the selected IVS channel. Because the exact output group and destination settings for this specific workflow are not established, confirm them in current AWS documentation rather than copying an unverified recipe.

  • Check the current MediaLive output options and whether the planned output is accepted by the selected IVS channel type.
  • Confirm the IVS ingest endpoint, protocol, and credentials or channel configuration required by the services involved.
  • Verify that the output’s video and audio formats meet IVS ingest requirements.
  • Test the complete path—including playback and any planned failover—before the event. A successful Link-to-MediaLive input test alone does not verify the IVS handoff.

What dual MediaLive pipelines do—and do not protect

AWS documents dual independent MediaLive processing pipelines as an option for resilience within MediaLive. Both pipelines need matching upstream and downstream support for that design. It addresses processing-path risks, but by itself it does not provide a redundant camera, a second Link device, an independent network path, or a verified failover configuration into IVS. Design those failure domains separately and test the actual end-to-end recovery behavior.

Choose IVS ingest settings and protocol

For Amazon IVS low-latency streaming, AWS documents H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, with RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest options. Use the channel type’s current limits rather than assuming a universal resolution or bitrate. AWS’s getting-started material recommends a two-second keyframe interval for its OBS workflow; check the current requirements for your actual encoder and channel before adopting that value.

Setting or choice Guidance
Video codec H.264 for IVS low-latency ingest, per AWS documentation.
Audio codec AAC-LC for IVS low-latency ingest, per AWS documentation.
Rate control Prefer constant bitrate (CBR). AWS warns that variable bitrate (VBR) spikes can cause dropped frames before ingest or buffering during playback.
Signal format Use progressive video; avoid interlaced signals.
Keyframes AWS’s OBS getting-started material recommends a two-second interval. Confirm the current requirement for the selected channel and encoder.
Resolution and bitrate Use the current limits for the chosen IVS channel type; no single universal value is established for this workflow.

RTMPS, RTMP, or SRT?

Select only a protocol supported by the chosen IVS ingest and the MediaLive output path you have verified. Firewall access and transport security are practical differentiators; a protocol available on one side is not proof the whole chain supports it.

IVS low-latency ingest protocol Firewall port listed by AWS What to check
RTMPS TCP 443 Uses TLS 1.2 or later. Confirm the MediaLive output path and network policy support it.
RTMP TCP 1935 AWS lists this for insecure RTMP. Confirm that its security and compatibility are acceptable for your setup.
SRT Port 9000 Confirm the selected services and encoder support the required SRT configuration, as well as the relevant firewall rules.

These port examples apply to the listed IVS low-latency ingest protocols. WebRTC has separate network requirements; do not apply this table to a WebRTC workflow.

Give the stream enough network headroom

AWS recommends a stable connection capable of maintaining the stream’s constant upload, using wired connections when possible. Its configuration guidance recommends planning for 50% more bandwidth than the minimum required to provide headroom for bitrate fluctuations. That is a planning recommendation, not a measured reliability guarantee.

  • Prefer a wired network connection for encoding and production equipment where practical.
  • Consider a dedicated internet VLAN for encoding equipment, as AWS recommends.
  • Check upload capacity under realistic competing-use conditions, not only when the network is idle.
  • Allow the firewall to pass the protocol’s required port and destinations. Restrictions can interrupt ingest even when the encoder and channel settings are otherwise correct.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Monitor the stream and troubleshoot failures

When viewers report buffering or the stream disconnects, isolate the failure stage rather than changing several settings at once. Check IVS Stream Health information and encoder logs, then correlate symptoms with MediaLive input and output health and local network conditions.

IVS disconnects after the feed stops

AWS says IVS can terminate a low-latency stream session after 30 seconds without broadcaster data, allowing time for the broadcaster to reconnect. Stream starvation—delayed or halted packet delivery—can stem from encoder errors, a local network problem, congestion, internet loss, or an issue along the transit path.

  • Check whether the encoder or MediaLive output stopped sending data, and inspect logs around the interruption.
  • Check the local network and public internet path for loss or congestion.
  • Confirm firewall rules still permit the selected ingest protocol and destinations.
  • Test reconnection and playback recovery before an event; do not assume a processing-pipeline redundancy design covers every other failure point.

Viewers see buffering or dropped frames

  • Inspect IVS Stream Health and encoder logs for bitrate fluctuation, dropped frames, or signs of overload.
  • Check whether the configured bitrate exceeds what the network can sustain, including during competing network use.
  • Use CBR rather than VBR where applicable, and reduce load on an overloaded encoding machine by choosing a less demanding encoding preset.
  • Verify that the signal is progressive and that codec, audio, and channel settings match the current IVS requirements.

MediaLive receives video, but IVS does not

That symptom points to the downstream handoff rather than proving a Link failure. Recheck the configured MediaLive output, destination, channel type, protocol compatibility, and firewall access against current AWS service documentation. The precise MediaLive-to-IVS output recipe is not established here, so validate the configuration with a test stream before production.
