Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Schedule one YouTube live event for each programming block, then schedule the Hetzner server to play that block’s playlist and send its feed to YouTube at the matching time. YouTube schedules the live event; your server or encoder chooses and plays the video files. Those are separate jobs that must be coordinated.
Understand the two schedules
YouTube represents a scheduled event as a liveBroadcast and the incoming audio/video feed as a liveStream. The broadcast is the event viewers see on your channel; the stream is the feed your encoder sends to YouTube. A broadcast does not select or rotate local MP4 files. Your server-side playout process does that. See Google’s broadcast lifecycle and broadcast and stream resource guide.
For example, a gaming channel could schedule one event for a morning highlights block and another for an evening tournament replay, with a separate ordered playlist for each. The YouTube event schedule and the server’s playlist schedule need matching start times and the correct stream association.
Choose how YouTube streams map to events
For events at different times that share the same encoder settings, YouTube documents reusing one incoming stream for multiple broadcasts. Bind each scheduled broadcast to that stream. Each broadcast is associated with exactly one stream. If events overlap or need different stream settings, separate stream resources may be appropriate. The choice depends on timing and configuration, not on which playlist is stored on the server.

| Arrangement | When it fits | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse one stream for multiple broadcasts | Events run at different times and use shared stream settings. | Less encoder reconfiguration; ensure the right playlist process runs for each event. |
| Use separate streams | Events overlap or require different stream settings. | More stream configuration to manage; check that each broadcast is bound to its intended stream. |
Prepare one playlist for each programming block
- Arrange the video files. Decide the exact order for each event and keep each block’s file list separate. Confirm that you have permission to livestream every video and its audio.
- Check media compatibility. Files in a sequence may differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio format. Test whether your intended FFmpeg workflow can pass streams through unchanged or needs conversion. Do not assume files will transition cleanly just because they play individually.
- Choose a playout pattern. You can start a process for each scheduled playlist or run a persistent process that changes inputs. The choice affects restarts, gaps, transitions, and logging; test it using your actual files. The FFmpeg concat playlist example is a starting point, not a production-validated command for every server or media collection.
Create and connect YouTube live events
If you automate event creation through the Live Streaming API, each broadcast needs a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Your account must be authorized and enabled to livestream. YouTube documents permission errors when an account is not enabled or is blocked from live streaming.
- Create a broadcast for each block. In the API, create a separate
liveBroadcastfor each scheduled event and set its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. - Create or reuse an incoming stream. A
liveStreamdescribes the feed sent by your encoder. Configure the encoder from the stream’s delivery settings, including the applicable ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. - Bind the event to its stream. Use
liveBroadcasts.bindto associate each broadcast with the intended stream. Verify the binding before the event rather than assuming event creation selected the correct feed. - Coordinate playout with the event. Configure a server scheduler to start the corresponding playlist process at the intended time. Check that the YouTube broadcast state and the server feed agree; YouTube’s lifecycle includes testing and live states.
- Test the complete sequence. Verify the actual video, audio, playlist order, stream association, and start timing before relying on unattended operation.
The exact scheduler configuration depends on the installed operating system and FFmpeg build. The available Hetzner server documentation does not prescribe a streaming-specific cron or systemd timer, process supervisor, recovery policy, or server size, so validate those pieces on your own workload.

Select an ingest protocol
RTMP and HLS are different delivery methods; their settings are not interchangeable. Choose based on your encoder’s capabilities and the requirements of your workflow.
| Protocol | Useful considerations |
|---|---|
| RTMP | FFmpeg documents sending a real-time file input to an RTMP server. Confirm that your FFmpeg build, media, and YouTube ingest configuration work together. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation. |
| HLS | YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that segment-based HLS has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. |
Those HLS requirements apply to HLS delivery, not RTMP. Follow the current YouTube instructions for the protocol you select.

Plan and validate the Hetzner server workload
There is no established Hetzner server size that is sufficient for every scheduled playlist stream. The workload depends on whether FFmpeg stream-copies or transcodes, the output resolution and bitrate, how many jobs run simultaneously, and how much media you store. Hetzner’s general server documentation does not give a streaming-specific CPU, memory, storage, or network prescription.
- Measure the actual CPU and memory load with your chosen files and output settings, especially if transcoding.
- Allow storage for the media files and any working files your workflow creates.
- Check that the server’s available network capacity and the encoder output are suitable for the stream you intend to send.
- Test the full duration and playlist changes, not only a brief sample; observe whether the process remains healthy and whether transitions behave as expected.
Troubleshoot scheduling and playback
- The event starts, but the wrong videos play. The YouTube broadcast does not select local files. Check which playlist the server scheduler started and whether the broadcast is bound to the intended stream.
- The event is scheduled but no feed arrives. Confirm the account is permitted to livestream, the encoder is using the correct stream delivery settings, and the server process started at the scheduled time. Check the broadcast and stream state in YouTube.
- The playlist stops or changes badly between files. Compare the files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio formats. Test the concat or conversion workflow with the actual media, and inspect the FFmpeg process output.
- Events conflict or use incompatible settings. Avoid treating one stream as a universal fit. Review whether events overlap or need different encoder settings, then configure and bind separate stream resources where appropriate.
- An HLS feed is rejected or delayed. Check segment duration, outstanding segment count, HTTPS method, and byte-range behavior against YouTube’s HLS requirements. HLS can have higher latency than RTMP.
- The automation fails after a process exits. Add and test process supervision and recovery appropriate to your operating system. The cited platform documentation does not define a universal restart policy.
- YouTube blocks the broadcast. Check channel livestream eligibility and permissions, and confirm you have the rights needed for all video and audio in the playlist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to manage a Hetzner server, FFmpeg jobs, and YouTube event coordination, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
