If a local file is looping, make sure it exists on the VPS and is actually playing. A black YouTube player can have several causes; the title alone cannot identify which one applies.
First locate where the video goes black
Compare the same moment in three places. This narrows the fault before you change bitrate, resolution, or the stream key.

Vultr’s Ubuntu and OBS guide recommends checking that sources feed Preview and transitioning the intended scene to the live Program screen. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends monitoring stream health and its messages during the stream.
Check the OBS source and scene
Verify Preview and Program
- In OBS, look at Preview. Confirm the intended source is visible and enabled.
- If Preview is correct, confirm the intended scene is on Program. In a Studio Mode setup, transition the scene to Program.
- Check that another scene or source is not covering the video. If the source is still black in Preview, troubleshoot it before changing YouTube settings.
For a looped video file, verify playback on the VPS
Vultr’s Broadcaster Marketplace App guide says to upload source files to the server for a 24/7 stream. Confirm the media file is present at the path configured in OBS, the media source is playing, and Preview shows the video. Check the source’s Loop option if it should replay automatically. Vultr also advises checking audio levels; this can help distinguish a playing source from a stalled or silent one.

- If the file was moved or renamed, correct the source path.
- If playback has ended, restart it and confirm the loop setting.
- If Preview remains black, test the file source itself rather than adjusting encoder bitrate.
Compare OBS output with YouTube’s status
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the broadcast and check stream health and any displayed messages.
- Compare its status with OBS Program. If Program is black, keep investigating the source, scene, or OBS output.
- If Program looks correct but YouTube does not, use the Control Room messages to investigate the stream key, ingest connection, and encoder configuration.
- Use OBS logs and dropped-frame statistics as diagnostic evidence rather than changing multiple settings at once.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream-health messages. A valid stream key or a connected status does not by itself prove that the intended video source is reaching the player.
Check the VPS session and server load when symptoms point there
Test a remote desktop disconnect
If the stream changes after you disconnect, verify whether OBS continues running independently of the remote desktop session. Vultr’s Ubuntu guide specifically asks users to disconnect the Ubuntu desktop and verify that the stream stays active. Its Windows Server section discusses an RDP session-lock issue and a tscon workaround for that Windows setup. Do not apply that Windows remedy to Linux; first identify the VPS operating system and remote-session type.

Use CPU evidence before lowering resolution
Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu streaming-server guide lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as prerequisites for its described setup. These are not universal minimums for every OBS workflow. The guide recommends 720p (1280×720) for a server with at least two vCPUs and warns that higher resolution and frame rate require more processing. It advises monitoring OBS CPU and reducing resolution or moving to more vCPUs if CPU is high and frames are dropping; its stated 90% CPU threshold is Vultr’s operational recommendation, not a universal rule or proof that CPU caused a black screen.
Only test a lower resolution or frame rate when CPU or encoding symptoms support that path. A missing or stalled media source will not be fixed by adding VPS capacity.

Check encoder and network settings only when indicated
Use YouTube’s codec-specific guidance
YouTube’s encoder page recommends CBR, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its published bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 720p at 30 fps, the page lists H.264 at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended; for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate, it lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended. These are codec-specific examples, not universal settings for every stream. Confirm the current recommendations on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Do not confuse dropped frames with a missing source
OBS says dropped frames indicate the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its connection troubleshooting guide suggests lowering bitrate as a diagnostic step. That can help investigate a connection problem, but it will not restore a video source that is absent from OBS Preview.

Troubleshooting by symptom
