In YouTube Studio, create a stream and give OBS its server URL and stream key; then configure Windows not to sleep while plugged in, test the stream, and plan for outages. This is a do-it-yourself setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: power loss, internet drops, overheating, software failures, and Windows restarts can all stop it.
Before you start: check the channel, laptop, and connection
- Channel: YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check eligibility before troubleshooting your encoder.
- Laptop: OBS Studio supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but that does not mean every supported laptop can encode every resolution and frame rate smoothly. The actual result depends on its hardware and settings.
- Internet: Check sustained upload speed at the laptop’s streaming location and time of day. Download speed alone does not tell you how much capacity is available for a livestream.
- Power and cooling: Plan to keep the laptop on its power adapter and somewhere it can shed heat. Battery behavior and thermal limits vary by model.
- Content rights: Use video, music, and other material you have the rights to stream. A 24/7 broadcast does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s copyright rules or its rules on monetization and reused content.
For an Indian channel, check the sustained upload and data limits of your own ISP plan, as well as power conditions at your location. There is no single upload plan or backup-power size that fits every city, provider, laptop, and router.
Set up a continuous stream with OBS and YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose Go Live, then create or select a stream. Set its title, description, audience, and privacy before making it public. Choose a scheduled stream if you want to prepare it in advance.
- Copy the connection details. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for an encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if offered, and connect the account or enter the server and key as prompted. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share or display it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Configure OBS for the laptop. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and use its result as a starting point, not a promise of stability. Add the video, audio, or scene you intend to broadcast. If you are streaming a game live, test that actual game and scene; a static desktop or short test clip may not reveal the load of gameplay.
- Keep Windows awake while plugged in. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the computer stays awake for the planned stream. Screen-off and sleep are separate controls. Test that OBS continues sending after the display turns off. Menu names can differ in other Windows versions and in laptop power-management software.
- Start privately and verify the feed. Start streaming in OBS, then wait for the preview and stream-health information in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check the image, audio, and motion you will actually use. Confirm the stream looks and sounds right before changing its visibility or relying on it unattended.
- Run a representative test. Leave the intended scenes and audio running long enough to check for dropped frames, overheating, or other instability. Watch the laptop’s CPU or GPU load and temperatures using appropriate tools for that model. Test a deliberate brief internet interruption and confirm whether OBS reconnects and YouTube resumes receiving the feed.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframes for your connection
YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations give useful starting points. These are recommended encoder video bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet plans. YouTube also advises leaving 20% upload headroom: for example, a 5 Mbps video bitrate implies about 6.25 Mbps of available upload capacity for the video alone under that guidance. Audio, other network use, and changes in available bandwidth also matter.

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. In OBS, check the output and streaming options for these settings; labels can vary with OBS versions and encoder choices.

Pick a setting the laptop can sustain
Start at a lower resolution or frame rate if the laptop struggles or your upload capacity is variable. Increase quality only after a representative test stays stable. A higher frame rate can be useful for fast-moving gameplay, but it also raises the encoding workload and can require more bitrate. The best setting is the highest one that remains stable on your actual laptop and connection—not simply the largest number in OBS.
Leave room for changing network conditions
YouTube warns that interruptions in connectivity can break a stream, and other people or devices using the same connection reduce the capacity available to OBS. Do not set the encoder bitrate equal to a best-case speed-test result. If the connection is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution and retest. A compatible Ethernet connection is an option when you can wire the laptop to the router; it does not increase the ISP’s upload capacity or prevent an ISP outage.

Make the laptop setup more resilient
Power and heat
- Keep the laptop’s correct power adapter connected and confirm it remains on when the display turns off.
- Place the laptop on a firm, unobstructed surface and monitor it during an extended test. Heat and safe operating limits are model-specific.
- A UPS may keep some equipment running during an outage, but its suitability depends on the laptop adapter, router load, and desired runtime. Check those loads before choosing one; a particular size cannot be recommended without them.
Network and recovery
- Use a stable connection and leave upload headroom. If a wired connection is practical and supported, test it against Wi-Fi at the actual streaming location.
- Enable OBS’s automatic reconnect option and test it. It may help after a brief interruption, but it cannot restore lost power, fix an ISP outage that lasts too long, recover a hung encoder, or prevent a Windows restart.
- OBS documents a
--startstreaminglaunch parameter for starting a stream automatically. Startup automation needs careful testing and does not replace checking the stream or arranging for someone to respond when it fails.
Monitor an unattended stream
Check stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room and, from a separate device, confirm that the public watch page is receiving the expected feed. Decide who will respond to alerts and how they will restart the stream if OBS, Windows, the laptop, or the network does not recover by itself. A laptop running OBS is not a managed broadcast appliance.
Plan for the recording: a 24-hour stream may not archive as one replay
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not promise that a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If keeping a full copy matters, record locally in OBS and check during the broadcast that the recording is growing and that the laptop has enough free storage. Alternatively, split the broadcast into shorter sessions and confirm that each archive is available. Test the recording workflow before depending on it.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream failures
