To keep the broadcast continuous, the PC must stay awake, powered and connected to the internet. Test the whole setup before relying on it.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s computer livestreaming guidance.
Clear the recording for this use
Confirm that permission for the specific YouTube livestream and any archive covers all music, lyrics, performances, video clips and other third-party material. A church’s ability to use a work in person, or permission to record it, does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even licensed material can cause interruptions if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID; an archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim. Check with the rights holder or licensing administrator. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Set up a Windows 11 livestream with OBS
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and configure a stream. Copy its stream URL and key into OBS. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it can send a feed to that stream. YouTube explains these settings in Manage live stream settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for recording and livestreaming. In OBS, configure the streaming service and enter the URL and key from the Live Control Room. Interface labels can change, so check the current OBS documentation if a menu differs.
- Use the service recording as the video source. Add the recorded worship service as the source, then check that its audio and picture play correctly. Set the output to match the recording and your available upload capacity. If you need the video to repeat continuously, verify the current OBS playback and looping controls and test a complete playback cycle; the exact OBS menus and loop behavior are not established here.
- Choose encoder settings that YouTube supports. YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guide lists supported combinations. Use a supported resolution and bitrate appropriate to your source and connection. YouTube recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Use RTMPS when supported; it encrypts the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL.
- Keep the Windows PC awake while plugged in. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts and adjust the plugged-in sleep timeout so the PC will not sleep during the broadcast. The display timeout is separate and can be set to suit the room. Menus can vary by device and Windows build. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the public stream. Confirm that the public watch page is accessible, the audio and video are right, and stream health is acceptable. If you are recording a local archive, check that file too. YouTube recommends testing before the event and continuously monitoring audio and video; see its streaming tips.
Make the stream reliable enough to leave running
Allow upload headroom
Measure outbound upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate. On a shared connection, the available capacity can fluctuate, so a speed test taken once is not a guarantee of sustained capacity. If the stream buffers or drops frames, reduce the encoder bitrate to a level the connection can sustain, or use a less-congested connection.
Know what can interrupt a local broadcast
A Windows-based stream depends on the computer, encoder, internet connection and power remaining available. A sleep setting, restart, software problem, network outage or power loss can stop the feed. Keep the PC plugged in, prevent sleep for the planned broadcast window, and have an operator available to check the preview and recover the encoder if needed. A complete test helps reveal issues before the service is unattended.

Plan archives and rewind around long streams
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable, and a single complete archive should not be assumed. If viewers need to pause or rewind while watching, or need a replay afterward, test that specific arrangement or consider separate shorter scheduled broadcasts. Which way should you keep a YouTube stream running?
YouTube’s verified-encoder directory identifies these different approaches; it is not a comparative reliability rating. The right fit depends on whether you want to operate a local PC, use a cloud service or evaluate dedicated hardware.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The channel cannot start a livestream: Check channel verification and recent livestream restrictions. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- The Live Control Room does not receive a feed: Check that OBS is running, the stream URL and key are copied correctly, and the encoder is connected. If you replaced or reset the key, update it in OBS.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Check outbound upload capacity and compare it with the total stream bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the bitrate or address competing network use if necessary.
- The PC stops streaming after a while: Check the plugged-in sleep timeout in Windows power settings, as well as power, network and encoder status.
- Music or other content interrupts the broadcast: Review rights for the specific livestream and archive, and ask the rights holder or licensing administrator whether the channel needs a Content ID allowlist.
- Viewers cannot rewind or find a complete replay: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable beyond that duration, and a full archive is not guaranteed.
