To run Malayalam church sermons continuously on YouTube from a VPS, use FFmpeg as the encoder: prepare media you have rights to use, create a YouTube broadcast and stream, then send the files to YouTube over RTMPS using the stream URL and key. For an unattended feed, also plan how FFmpeg will restart after a failure and whether to use one long broadcast or shorter events. A VPS and looping command alone do not guarantee uninterrupted playback or a complete replay archive.
Understand the YouTube stream and broadcast
YouTube treats the incoming encoder feed and the event viewers watch as separate resources. The stream carries video and audio from FFmpeg; a broadcast is the YouTube event attached to that feed. YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide says one stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts. Decide whether you want one long event or recurring scheduled events before configuring your workflow: the choice affects event management and replay planning, not whether FFmpeg can loop files. Check eligibility and prepare the sermons
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream and broadcast you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key for FFmpeg. Keep the key private; reset it if it is exposed. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the stream before and during a broadcast. Check every media element’s rights
Make a clearly named set of sermon recordings and verify that the church or channel has permission for each included element: sermon audio and video, music, photographs, slides, and other material. A church context or a file being publicly available does not itself establish permission. YouTube states that it scans live streams for third-party matches, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A licensed rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; permission alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Choose the broadcast and playlist design
One long event or recurring events
A single long event is operationally simple, but it is not the right choice if you need a dependable YouTube replay of the entire feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous event of 12 hours or more will be archived in full. If replay preservation matters, schedule separate shorter broadcasts or make an independent recording. The exact event workflow depends on your channel and Live Control Room settings. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.
One prepared playlist or separate scheduling
For a basic loop, put the sermon files in one compatible, ordered media file or create a playlist process that advances through files. The first approach is simpler to point FFmpeg at; the second gives you more control over order and replacements but requires a separate process or script. Neither approach is a YouTube feature guarantee. Test the transitions, audio levels, and intended order before going public.

Set encoder parameters to match the media and VPS
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with four seconds as the maximum. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio, with 128 kbps stereo as a recommended audio setting. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary content because it encrypts the connection to its servers. The recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current table for your chosen format rather than copying a bitrate without checking it. Your VPS also needs sustained outbound capacity above the selected bitrate, with headroom for network variation. - Copy or transcode: If the sermons already use compatible codecs and settings, copying their encoded streams can avoid unnecessary re-encoding. If not, configure FFmpeg to transcode to a supported format and YouTube’s recommendations. The right command depends on the files and installed FFmpeg build.
- Resolution and bitrate: Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source recordings and available sustained VPS egress. Use YouTube’s table for that combination; a higher setting is not useful if the source or connection cannot sustain it.
- Audio: Check that speech is clear and levels are consistent across recordings. If transcoding, use a supported audio codec and confirm the output in Live Control Room preview.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder settings allow it, and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum.
Configure FFmpeg on the VPS
Install an FFmpeg build that includes the protocols and codecs required by your media and chosen YouTube output. The following is a configuration pattern, not a command verified against a particular VPS, media file, or FFmpeg build. Replace the example paths and placeholders, choose copy or encoding options to suit the actual files, and test the result before relying on it.

-f flv "rtmps://STREAM_URL/STREAM_KEY"-stream_loop -1 is an FFmpeg input option for infinitely looping the input. The example uses H.264 and AAC as an illustrative transcode path; set video bitrate, buffer, frame rate, and GOP/keyframe interval to values appropriate for the selected output and YouTube’s current recommendations. The stream URL format and whether the key is appended to it depend on the values YouTube supplies in Live Control Room. Treat the URL and key as secrets: avoid putting them in publicly readable scripts, logs, or support requests. FFmpeg’s documented looping and reconnection options are described in its command-line documentation and protocol documentation.
If your sermons are separate files rather than one combined file, do not assume that adding more input filenames to this command creates a continuous playlist. Build and test an explicit playlist or concatenation workflow for the file formats, durations, and transition behavior you need. Make sure the next file starts cleanly and that a missing or unreadable file does not silently end the feed.

Test before making the event public
- In YouTube Studio Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream URL and key.
- Start FFmpeg on the VPS with a short test asset or the intended playlist. Check the process output for input, codec, and connection errors.
- Wait for the incoming feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture is stable, sermon speech is audible, and the right event is selected.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and correct issues before starting or publicizing the event. Confirm that the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are sustainable over the VPS connection.
- Start the broadcast when ready, then monitor the encoder process and Live Control Room rather than assuming that a successful initial connection means the stream will stay healthy.
Plan recovery and archive retention
Restart a failed encoder process
Run FFmpeg under a VPS service manager or supervisor configured to restart the process after an unexpected exit, and retain logs so a volunteer can diagnose repeated failures. FFmpeg has protocol-specific reconnection options, but availability and behavior depend on the installed build and protocol. Test any retry flags with your actual setup. A process restart does not guarantee continuous viewer playback or that YouTube will preserve the event state; a new encoder connection may require attention in Live Control Room, depending on event settings.
Protect replays separately
If the sermon feed must be preserved as a replay, arrange a separate recording or divide the schedule into shorter events with archive needs in mind. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; it is not a promise that one 24/7 event will produce a complete replay. Keep an independent copy of source sermons and verify your recording workflow rather than treating the live event as the sole archive.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm that the broadcast is the one selected, the stream URL and key are correct, FFmpeg has started, and the VPS can make the outbound connection. Check FFmpeg logs for authentication, protocol, or input errors.
- Preview appears but stream health is poor: Check VPS egress stability and actual bitrate, then compare codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current recommendations. Lower the output demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
- Picture is present but speech is missing or distorted: Verify the source file contains the expected audio stream, inspect FFmpeg’s input/output mapping, and test the audio in preview. Check levels and codec settings across the playlist.
- FFmpeg exits when a file ends: Confirm that the input is being looped with
-stream_loop -1or that your playlist process advances to the next file. A process supervisor can restart a failed process, but it does not repair a broken playlist. - Connection drops and does not recover cleanly: Review protocol-supported FFmpeg reconnect options and VPS network logs, test the behavior, and inspect Live Control Room. Do not assume a retry flag restores the same YouTube event or uninterrupted playback.
- Live feed is interrupted by a rights match: Review the material and permissions, including music and embedded media. If a licensed rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether the channel must be allowlisted; permission by itself may not prevent a live match interruption.
- Expected replay is missing or incomplete: Check event duration and YouTube’s under-12-hour archive condition. Use shorter broadcasts or a separate recording process where replay retention is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will FFmpeg restart itself if the VPS reboots?
Not by itself. Configure a service manager or supervisor to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after failures, then test the behavior with the actual stream and YouTube event.
Can the same YouTube stream feed multiple broadcasts?
YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide says a stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts. Check the event setup in Live Control Room before relying on that arrangement.
