You can use a Linode Object Storage bucket—now Akamai Cloud Object Storage—to hold video files for a YouTube livestream, but the bucket does not create or send the live stream. A streaming app such as OBS must read and play the video, then encode and send the output to YouTube. The practical workflow is to find your bucket’s correct regional endpoint, make the video accessible to OBS without exposing credentials, test playback, and run a private stream test before broadcasting.
What the bucket does—and what it does not do
Akamai Cloud Object Storage is S3-compatible storage for files organized as objects in buckets. Akamai describes it as suitable for storing streaming-media assets, but storage is not a live encoder or YouTube ingest service. In this workflow, OBS (or another streaming app) retrieves and plays the asset, composes the output, and sends the stream to YouTube. YouTube does not fetch the video directly from your bucket. Akamai Cloud’s Object Storage documentation describes the storage service; OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers scenes, sources, output setup, and test streaming.
Set up the bucket and upload the video
-
Create or choose a bucket and region
Use Akamai Cloud Manager or the API to select the bucket and region. Bucket hostnames vary by region and endpoint type, so use the hostname displayed for your actual bucket rather than copying an endpoint from an unrelated example. Check the bucket’s details in Cloud Manager or its API response. Akamai’s Object Storage guides explain bucket and object management. Akamai’s 2026 overview says the service spans more than 20 regions globally; that is a provider-reported region count, not a performance or availability comparison.
-
Upload the media file
Upload the video as an object in the bucket. Documented management options include Cloud Manager, Linode CLI, s3cmd, and Cyberduck. Choose the method that suits your workflow; the important checks are that the upload completes and you know the object’s name and location.

Choose a safe way for OBS to access the object
Objects are private by default. A URL alone does not grant anonymous access to a private object. Before adding a remote object to OBS, decide how the player will be authorized:
- Public-readable object: Use only if making the video publicly accessible is acceptable. Avoid changing access settings on unrelated objects.
- Temporary signed URL: This can grant time-limited access if the selected playback client supports the URL and its expiry lasts through testing and the intended playback period. Validate this with the exact client; support is not guaranteed by the general OBS source documentation.
- Authenticated download or sync: Use an S3-compatible tool or workflow to retrieve the object with credentials and stage it on the streaming computer. This avoids putting credentials into a playback URL.
Access keys have a public key and a secret key. Akamai states that the secret is shown only once when created and cannot be viewed again after the creation window closes. Store it securely, limit permissions to what the workflow needs where possible, and never place it in an OBS scene URL, browser overlay, screen share, or live broadcast. See Akamai’s access-key management guide.

Name the source, then use the source’s local-file option if the video is staged on the computer. Enable looping if you want that file to repeat, and check the source’s audio settings.
-
If you want to try a remote object URL, enter it as the media source’s file/URL only after making sure the object is readable through the chosen access method. OBS documentation does not certify every S3-compatible URL, object permission, or codec combination; test the exact file and endpoint rather than assuming it will play.

Confirm that video and audio appear in the preview and that playback continues as expected.
For a playlist
OBS documents VLC Video Source for playlists. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Add a VLC Video Source and configure the ordered files or playlist according to your intended sequence and repeat behavior. As with a single remote file, validate access and playback with the actual object URLs; the documentation does not guarantee that every remote storage URL will work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a remote URL will not play
First check the endpoint, object path, permissions, URL expiry, file format, and whether the source can decode the media. If direct playback still fails, use an S3-capable download or sync step to stage the file locally, then select that local file in OBS and test again. Local staging also gives you a fallback if remote retrieval or your network interrupts playback.

Configure and test the YouTube stream
-
In OBS, open Settings and configure the stream service and YouTube stream key using the current YouTube and OBS setup flows. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it on stream or share it publicly.
-
In Settings > Output, choose an encoder and output settings appropriate for your connection and the YouTube stream configuration. Match the intended resolution and frame rate, and verify that the upload bandwidth can sustain the output. The cited setup references do not prescribe a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for every account, codec, and network, so use the current YouTube guidance for your selected stream settings rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all value.
-
Check that the OBS canvas and output resolution suit the video, and review audio meters and monitoring for clipping, silence, or unexpected audio.

Run a private or unlisted test broadcast, if available for your YouTube setup, and watch the YouTube-side preview/status as well as the OBS preview. Let it run for several minutes, as OBS’s Quick Start recommends testing before the first stream.
-
Check for dropped frames, stalls, missing audio, and whether the video resumes or loops as intended. Do not treat successful object reads after an upload or update as proof of uninterrupted playback: Akamai’s consistency statement says reads after successful writes or updates return the latest version, not that delivery has guaranteed bitrate, latency, or livestream reliability.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot open the object URL | The object is private, the URL is wrong, or the playback method cannot authenticate. | Verify the bucket’s regional endpoint and object path. Confirm public access or a supported temporary signed URL, or download/sync the object locally with an S3-compatible tool. |
| A URL works initially, then fails | A temporary signed URL expired or access settings changed. | Check the URL’s expiry and permissions. For a long broadcast, choose an access method that remains valid for the needed duration without exposing a secret key. |
| Media Source or VLC Video Source is missing | The expected source type is unavailable; VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. | Use Media Source for a single supported file. Install VLC and restart or reopen OBS if you need its playlist source, then verify it appears. |
| Video stutters or buffers | Remote delivery, local network capacity, or decoding may not sustain playback. | Test the exact asset and network under expected conditions. Consider staging the file locally and retesting. A storage consistency guarantee is not a playback or bandwidth guarantee. |
| Video plays but audio is silent or wrong | The file may lack the expected audio track, or source and OBS audio settings may be unsuitable. | Check the file’s audio, OBS source properties, audio meters, and monitoring during a test broadcast. |
| YouTube does not receive a usable stream | The selected service, stream key, encoder settings, or connection may be incorrect. | Recheck the current YouTube connection setup and OBS output settings, confirm the key is current, and repeat a private test before going public. |
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Storing a video in your own bucket does not give you the right to broadcast it. Before streaming, make sure you have permission for the video, music, artwork, and any other included material, including the rights needed for live use. YouTube may apply its copyright and monetization policies independently of where the source file is stored. A pre-recorded video presented as a livestream should also comply with YouTube’s applicable policies; do not assume that looping or storing content in Object Storage changes those obligations.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos live on YouTube without leaving a PC running, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home; the stream continues from the cloud.
- Uploaded quality is kept as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plans and pricing, then start the free first day.
