To reduce Linode costs for a nonstop YouTube livestream, first find out whether your bill is driven by compute, outbound transfer, or both. Record your instance plan and region, inspect CPU and memory use during representative streaming, and compare measured monthly transfer with the allowance and rates currently shown for your account and region. Then estimate the stream’s traffic from its bitrate and test any bitrate or architecture changes before keeping them.
Start with the bill and your actual usage
There is no universally cheapest Linode plan for a 24/7 YouTube stream: regional prices and included transfer depend on the current plan, and a suitable instance depends on the workload. Use your account’s billing and usage data alongside Akamai’s cloud pricing page and pricing calculator rather than relying on older plan tables or forum posts.
- Write down the instance plan, region, and the dates covered by the bill.
- Check measured outbound transfer for that same billing period, and whether it is the charge increasing the bill. Compare it with the current included allowance and any applicable overage shown for your plan.
- Observe CPU and memory while the stream is running normally, including representative busy periods and any other processes on the VM.
- Record the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and destination count. Include any other traffic the server sends.
Akamai describes pricing across compute, storage, networking, and Kubernetes, with regional variation. The calculator can estimate hourly and monthly costs, but check the current account and region for the plan’s transfer allowance and applicable charges; the available public information does not establish one universal allowance or overage rate.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 livestream use?
For a continuous stream over a 30-day month, a useful decimal estimate is GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324. This is arithmetic from bitrate and elapsed time, not a published Linode statistic.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Continuous bitrate | Estimated traffic in 30 days | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | About 324 GB | Before protocol overhead or other server traffic |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,296 GB | YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 720p at 30 fps |
| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB | YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 1080p at 30 fps |
Actual billed usage can differ because of protocol overhead, reconnects, other server traffic, and the exact billing-period length. Estimate using your configured bitrate and billing dates, then validate against the network interface and account usage. The 4 Mbps and 10 Mbps examples reflect YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a promise about a plan’s included transfer or a guarantee of picture quality.
Reduce bitrate only after testing the picture
If outbound transfer is the cost driver, a lower source bitrate can reduce the data sent from your server. But it also changes the feed YouTube receives, so do not assume YouTube’s downstream transcoding makes a lower-quality source invisible to viewers.

YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. It says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its H.264 recommendations include 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps; consult the current YouTube Live encoder settings for the complete settings and supported ranges.
- Note your current resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and stream-health status before making a change.
- Choose a lower bitrate only if it remains appropriate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.
- Test the changed feed and monitor YouTube’s stream health and the resulting picture. Keep the change only if quality and stability remain acceptable.
- Compare measured transfer after a representative billing period; don’t infer the bill impact from bitrate alone.
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers across devices and networks. That makes the quality and stability of the incoming encoder feed important: downstream transcoding does not undo a poor source feed.

Right-size the VM using observed load
If compute is the main cost, compare the VM’s actual CPU and memory use with the resources in its current plan, then price a smaller or otherwise better-fitting option in the calculator for the same region. Make the decision from representative load, not a momentary idle reading or an old example instance size in a tutorial.
A nonstop stream also makes reliability relevant. Before resizing, consider how you will handle a restart or interruption and verify the stream resumes as intended. Change one factor at a time, monitor the server and YouTube stream, and retain a practical recovery path. A smaller VM is not a saving if it cannot sustain the workload reliably.

Keep or remove a relay based on the whole architecture
A relay is most defensible when one feed from your location is forwarded to multiple services: it can reduce duplicate uploads over the source connection. Linode’s RTMP guide describes that architecture; it does not establish that a relay necessarily lowers the Linode bill.
For a single YouTube destination, compare direct encoder-to-YouTube delivery with the full relay cost. Include the relay VM, its outbound traffic, and any transfer charges, as well as the requirements the relay solves. A relay can add another VM and outbound path rather than reduce total cost. Use current regional pricing and measured usage for both designs.

Object Storage and CDN are different from live ingest
Linode Object Storage can serve as an origin for delivery through Akamai CDN in documented streaming and data-delivery scenarios. That may fit a project storing and distributing media assets, but it is not evidence that Object Storage reduces the live encoder-to-YouTube ingest cost. Keep storage and CDN estimates separate from the traffic that carries your live feed to YouTube. See the Object Storage documentation for its role.
How can I reduce Linode costs for a 24/7 YouTube livestream?
- Identify the charge. Match the bill dates to measured transfer and resource use; note the instance and region.
- Estimate traffic. Apply the 30-day bitrate approximation, then compare it with actual account usage and the current plan details.
- Test encoding changes. Lower bitrate only when the resulting YouTube picture and stream health remain acceptable.
- Review compute and architecture. Resize only after observing representative load; remove a relay only if direct delivery still meets your needs, or keep it when its multi-destination role justifies the full cost.
- Re-price the design. Check the current regional calculator and account billing data after changes, using the same availability and performance requirements for each option.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a Linode stream server, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
