How to Write a Podcast Script: A Practical Guide for Every Format

A podcast script can be an outline, a partial script, or a fully cued production document. Match its detail to the format, then revise it aloud.

A useful podcast script is a production guide, not necessarily a word-for-word transcript. Choose an outline for a flexible conversation, script key passages when exact wording matters, or build a fully cued production script when a narrative episode depends on precise sequencing of narration, interviews, and sound.

Choose how much of the episode to script

Let the format, your comfort on mic, and the production’s need for precision determine the script’s depth. A script can keep an episode on course without dictating every sentence; Spotify for Creators describes it as a set of guardrails rather than a movie script (Spotify for Creators’ scripting guide).

Script type Best fit What to write Trade-off
Outline Solo conversations, co-host chats, and flexible interviews The episode promise, topics in order, key points, and prompts or questions Most room for spontaneity; less precision over exact wording and timing
Partial script Episodes that are conversational but have a few passages that need consistency Exact wording for the opening, guest introduction, transitions, factual passages, ad read, or call to action; prompts for the rest Balances natural conversation with control over important lines
Full or production script Narrative episodes built around selected interview excerpts, scenes, or sound Narration, speaker labels, clip references, sound cues, and useful timecodes or durations Best for precise sequence and editing; takes more preparation and can feel rigid if read mechanically

There is no single correct format. NPR Illinois likewise advises that a script can be partial, and that narrative scripts may be arranged after recorded material is gathered (NPR Illinois’ student podcast guide).

Plan the episode before drafting

  1. Write the listener promise. In one sentence, state what the listener should understand, feel, or be able to do by the end. Use it to decide what belongs in the episode and what can be cut.
  2. Choose the format and script depth. A solo explainer, interview, co-hosted conversation, and documentary need different levels of structure. Spotify’s guide offers separate structures for solo, interview, and co-hosted shows.
  3. Gather the material that shapes the story. For a narrative built from interviews, review the recordings and choose the excerpts that carry the story before writing connecting narration. NPR describes scripting after gathering recorded sound; Transom notes that narration is often the final stitching after interview edits (Transom’s guide to the radio feature).
  4. Arrange the beats. Give every segment a purpose and a transition. Group interview questions by theme and prepare follow-ups. For a narrative, map a beginning, middle, and end, then order scenes and clips so the listener can follow the progression. Spotify’s examples are topic-based; the USC Climate Center podcast guide discusses shaping a narrative and weaving narration with recorded voices and sound.
  5. Draft spoken copy. Use direct sentences, concrete details, and transitions that sound natural aloud. Add narration when it supplies context, clarifies a transition, or compresses time—not simply to repeat what a clip already communicates. Transom’s guidance is to add script when it enhances what listeners hear, adds depth, clears confusion, condenses time, or helps production flow.
  6. Add production marks where they help. Label speakers and distinguish spoken words from directions. Mark clip starts and ends, music or natural sound, pauses, pronunciation notes, and timecodes when an editor needs them.
  7. Read aloud and revise. Rehearse or record a table read at a natural pace. Shorten lines that cause stumbles or run out of breath; mark a pause or breath if it helps delivery. NPR specifically recommends shortening difficult sentences.
  8. Estimate and check timing. Assign approximate durations to segments, then revise after a read-through. Spoken pace varies, so an actual rehearsal is more useful than assuming a universal words-per-minute rate. Spotify recommends estimated timestamps as a way to allocate segment time.

Shape the script around the format

Solo episode

Lead with the central point, then order supporting ideas and examples. Script a concise opening if you want exact wording, use signposts to make topic changes clear, and plan a close and any listener action. A short recap can help reinforce the episode’s main takeaways without repeating every section.

Interview episode

Build a question route around a few themes. Use open prompts that invite explanation, and keep follow-up questions ready for details, examples, or points that need clarification. Leave room to react to what the guest actually says; the prepared questions are a route through the conversation, not a demand to read every line.

Co-hosted conversation

Map the segments and decide who introduces each topic or contributes a planned point. Leave space for responses and conversation rather than writing both hosts’ dialogue line by line. A loose plan can make turns clearer and reduce the chance that both hosts speak over one another.

Narrative or documentary episode

Organize the story around scenes, recorded voices, narration, and relevant natural sound. Identify clips clearly so the editor can find them; add timecodes or file identifiers when available. Keep narration focused on context the recording cannot supply, a transition the listener needs, or a stretch of time that can be compressed. Transom recommends short narration, often written after interviews have been edited; the USC guide describes scripts using narration, actualities, natural sound, music, and timecodes.

Use a template that fits the production

This is a flexible working layout, not a required industry standard. Remove fields that do not apply, or add cues your host and editor need.

Make the page usable in the recording room

  • Separate spoken copy from directions using consistent labels, brackets, or formatting.
  • For clips, identify the speaker and source file, then mark the intended in and out points or timecode when known.
  • Use sound and music cues only when they guide the performance or edit; identify when a cue starts or stops if that matters.
  • Mark pauses, pronunciations, and pickup lines where a host or editor would need them.
  • Keep the current script version identifiable so everyone records and edits from the same draft.
