If YouTube says your live streaming limit has been reached while you can’t see a live stream, first check the exact error in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube has a daily limit on creating streams and separate limits on streams active at the same time; an encoder or stream-key error is another possibility. The right fix depends on which message YouTube shows.
Identify which limit or error YouTube means
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and read the error shown beside the stream’s Health Indicator. The dashboard records when an error was seen and continues to show it if it has not been fixed. Use that exact message to choose a troubleshooting path rather than assuming every “limit reached” notice means the same thing.
| What the message points to | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Daily stream limit | YouTube limits how many live streams a channel can create in a 24-hour period. Its public guidance does not state a universal numeric daily quota. | Wait 24 hours before trying again, as YouTube advises. |
| Too many active streams | YouTube allows up to 10 active streams per channel and up to 3 active streams per stream key. Reaching either ceiling prevents another stream from starting. | Check the channel’s stream list and which key your encoder is using; end any event that is actually still active. |
| Encoder or stream-key error | The encoder may be using a stale or incorrect key, or a third-party app may have a sign-in issue. | Copy the key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. For sign-in-based software that does not use a stream key, contact that software’s support. |
YouTube describes the daily limit this way: “To help make YouTube safer for everyone, we limit how many live streams a channel can create in a 24 hour period.” That is a creation limit, distinct from the active-stream ceilings.
What to do for each case
If YouTube says the daily limit was reached
- Note the exact wording in Live Control Room so you know you are dealing with the daily creation limit, not an active-stream or encoder error.
- Wait 24 hours before trying to create or start another stream. YouTube gives that as the remedy; its cited public guidance does not establish a numeric quota or promise an earlier reset.
If YouTube says too many streams are active
- Review the channel’s stream list in YouTube Studio and look for events that are still active, including any that you did not expect to be running.
- Check which stream key is selected in the encoder. YouTube’s documented limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key, so a key can reach its limit before the channel-wide limit.
- End any event that is actually still active. Do not assume that deleting a scheduled event or resetting a key will clear a hidden or stuck session; YouTube’s public guidance does not say that either action reliably fixes one.
If the error comes from an encoder or third-party app
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select Stream.
- Copy the stream key shown there and update the key in your encoder, then try again.
- If the software signs in to YouTube and does not use a stream key, follow YouTube’s direction to contact that software’s support.
When ending a stream, stop both parts of the workflow
YouTube’s encoder guidance says to click End Stream and stop sending content from the encoder; its tips also say to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Checking both sides can help you spot unintended ongoing activity, but the guidance does not establish that an incomplete shutdown is the cause of every limit message.

Check access restrictions only if the error points to eligibility
A verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days is required for live streaming. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. These requirements may matter if YouTube reports an access or restriction issue, but they do not by themselves explain a daily-quota or active-stream limit message.
Why the limit can appear when you see no live stream
YouTube’s public documentation establishes the daily creation limit, the active-stream ceilings, and the usual encoder and stream-ending steps. It does not explain why a particular account might report a limit when its owner cannot see a live stream, whether YouTube is counting a hidden or stale session in that account, or whether support can clear such a state. The most useful next step is to match the exact Live Control Room message to the account’s stream list; if an apparent active session is not visible or cannot be ended, use YouTube’s support options rather than treating an unverified workaround as guaranteed.
