You can use a rented Windows server as a YouTube encoder, but do not provision a Hetzner Cloud VM on the assumption that Windows is a supported, licensed Cloud install. First confirm Hetzner’s current Windows Cloud deployment route and licensing with Hetzner and Microsoft. Once that is settled, the workflow is to create and secure the server, install an encoder such as OBS, connect it to a YouTube Live event with its stream URL and key, then test and monitor it. A server running continuously is not a guarantee that a stream will never disconnect.
Check the Windows deployment route before creating the server
Hetzner’s Cloud documentation describes creating a server and attaching a custom ISO, but that alone does not establish a supported or licensed Windows installation on Cloud. The Windows Server add-on described by Hetzner applies to dedicated root servers; do not assume it applies to Cloud instances. Before paying for a VM or building around it, ask Hetzner to confirm the currently supported Windows Cloud image or installation procedure, licensing terms, and whether Windows adds a cost. Confirm the licensing position with Microsoft as needed.
If you plan to install from a custom ISO, note that changing a server’s image after creation erases the disk data already on it. Hetzner’s server creation guide covers the available creation choices and this image-change warning.
Create the Cloud server and plan how you will administer it
- In Hetzner Console, create a server. Choose a server type, location, image, networking, firewall and backup options. Pick the image only after you have verified the Windows route.
- Choose network access deliberately. Hetzner allows a Cloud server to have public IPv4/IPv6, one public address, or no public address. A server without a public address needs to be connected through a private Network. Select an arrangement that gives you a secure way to administer Windows and lets the encoder reach YouTube.
- Decide how you will reach the Windows desktop. Do not expose Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) casually. Plan and verify remote access and Windows Firewall settings using current Windows-specific security guidance before making the machine reachable. Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall documentation explains its traffic behavior, not a complete Windows RDP hardening procedure.
- Set Cloud Firewall rules intentionally. Hetzner says traffic matching defined rules is allowed; with no rules, inbound traffic is blocked while outbound traffic is permitted. Add only the access you need, and check that your chosen administration route works before relying on the server unattended. See Hetzner’s Cloud Firewall overview.
- Consider backups and recovery before going live. Backup is one of the options in the creation workflow. Decide how you would restore the server and its configuration rather than treating a running VM as a backup.
Complete Windows installation and networking with Windows-specific instructions
Hetzner warns that a manual Cloud ISO installation can have trouble receiving network configuration through DHCP; the default gateway may need to be configured manually. The examples on its Cloud ISO gateway page are Linux-specific. Do not paste those Linux commands into Windows. Follow the verified Windows installation route and Windows-specific networking instructions, then confirm that the server has working outbound connectivity before installing or configuring the encoder. Hetzner also notes that temporary route changes do not survive a restart unless made persistent, so verify persistence using the applicable Windows method.

Prepare YouTube Live and connect an encoder
- Check channel eligibility early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming; it lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge.
- Install and configure the encoder on Windows. Use current OBS and Windows documentation for installation, encoder settings, startup behavior and recovery. The verified sources here do not establish current OBS Windows settings, unattended startup steps or crash-recovery behavior, so do not rely on an unverified recipe for a 24/7 deployment.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details in the encoder. Paste the stream URL and key into the corresponding encoder fields, then start a test broadcast and confirm that YouTube receives it before treating the setup as operational.
- Protect the stream key like a password. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast through that stream configuration. If it is compromised, YouTube says it can be reset in Live Control Room; update the encoder with the replacement key.
Size the connection, test the broadcast and keep watch
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For primary and backup encoders, its guidance is primary bitrate plus backup bitrate plus 20%. This is bandwidth-planning guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Hetzner server or network path will remain stable.
- Test the broadcast before depending on it. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the stream is accessible on the watch page and on mobile.
- Monitor picture and sound quality after going live. A connected encoder does not by itself confirm that viewers receive usable audio and video.
- If you configure a backup encoder, test the failover: YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and confirming that the player moves to the backup.
- Plan for Windows updates, encoder failure, server maintenance, network interruption and YouTube-side interruption. Testing and monitoring reduce uncertainty; they do not make a single VM an uninterrupted-service guarantee.

Do not treat one long broadcast as a permanent archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be archived, nor does it promise an uninterrupted 24/7 connection. If you need a permanent copy or a dependable archive workflow, verify YouTube’s current behavior and plan recording and storage separately rather than assuming one continuous live event will serve as your archive.

For content, stream only material you have the rights to use and check YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. A technically successful connection does not establish that music, gameplay footage or other material is authorized or eligible to remain available.
Choose the approach that matches the stream
A Windows VM with an encoder is for readers who specifically need a self-managed Windows environment or encoder workflow. It is not the only way to keep prerecorded video playing as a YouTube live stream.
