Choose Linode Object Storage for a media library held as S3-compatible objects and fetched by software that can work with a bucket. Choose Linode Block Storage when a stream process running on a Linode needs files on a mounted, disk-like volume. Neither storage type, by itself, establishes a way for YouTube to fetch and loop a video as a live stream: the encoder or streaming-server workflow is a separate component.
How the two storage types fit a loop-stream workflow
The useful distinction is how your streaming process accesses a file. An object bucket is accessed through an object-storage interface; a block volume is attached to a Linode and used like disk storage. Linode describes Object Storage as S3-compatible storage for unstructured data, including video, and documents it as an option for streaming and data delivery when paired with Akamai CDN. That describes storage and delivery roles, not a YouTube live-ingest recipe. Linode Object Storage documentation

Which should you use?
Choose Object Storage for a bucket-based media library
Use Object Storage if your files are unstructured assets and your software can retrieve them with an S3-compatible interface. It can keep the library independent of any one Linode VM, which is useful when machines or stream workloads change. Linode’s rclone guide demonstrates configuring a bucket and uploading files; it demonstrates file transfer, not playback into YouTube.

Choose Block Storage when the process needs a mounted path
Use Block Storage when the server-side encoder or stream process expects ordinary filesystem access, such as reading a file from a mounted volume. The volume is attached to a Linode, so this option couples the storage to that server workload more directly than an independent bucket does.
Use both if the library and active workload have different needs
A practical architecture is to keep the canonical media library in Object Storage and copy or cache the active video on an attached Block Storage volume when the stream process needs local filesystem behavior. This is an architectural option inferred from the documented roles of buckets and attached volumes, not a Linode-prescribed YouTube setup.

Can YouTube loop a video directly from Linode Object Storage?
The cited Linode materials do not show YouTube ingesting a video directly from an S3-compatible bucket URL, and they do not establish a YouTube procedure for looping a prerecorded file as a live broadcast. An rclone upload example proves that files can be put into a bucket; it does not make the bucket a live encoder or show that YouTube accepts it as a live source. Linode’s media-server guide index includes RTMP and Block Storage/Plex material, but those topics do not amount to a documented YouTube looping workflow.
Plan the storage layer and publishing layer separately. Your encoder or streaming server must obtain and play the file, produce a live stream, and publish it using an appropriate YouTube workflow. Verify YouTube’s current live-stream requirements and copyright rules before configuring that publishing step; do not assume a public bucket URL can replace it.

Estimate cost without relying on stale rates
Do not compare these choices using old community-posted prices or limits as if they were current. The historical Object Storage discussions surfaced differing outbound-transfer allowances, and historical Block Storage discussions are not a reliable source for today’s rates or attachment limits. Check current Linode pricing and product limits for your selected region before committing: Object Storage pricing discussion, Object Storage billing discussion, volume-per-Linode discussion, and historical Block Storage discussion.
- Measure the total size of the media library and how often files are added or replaced.
- Estimate how many bytes the stream server retrieves from storage, including repeated reads if it refetches a file.
- Separate storage-origin traffic from viewer delivery. If viewers watch through YouTube, that is a different path from repeatedly serving viewers directly from the storage origin.
- Compare current capacity and outbound-transfer rates for the relevant region and expected access pattern.
Storage cost depends on what is stored and transferred; the fact that a video is uploaded once does not by itself establish which option will cost less when it is read repeatedly. Treat the comparison as a workload-specific billing estimate, not a guaranteed savings claim.
