This brings the encoder process back after many crashes; it does not fix a bad input, restore a network connection, bypass a YouTube restriction, or provide music rights.
What systemd can—and cannot—restart
systemd supervises a process. When the encoder exits, its Restart= policy determines whether systemd starts it again, and RestartSec= sets the delay before that attempt. Enabling the service separately configures it to start during boot. An operator’s explicit stop is not undone by the restart policy.
A restarted encoder may still fail for the same reason: an unavailable playlist, invalid stream key, full disk, network outage, or YouTube restriction. A service marked active only tells you about the local process; check YouTube Live Control Room to establish whether the platform is receiving the stream.
Choose the restart policy

Both policies are subject to systemd start-rate limiting. If a service fails repeatedly in a short period, systemd can stop retrying until the rate limit is reset. A longer restart delay can reduce a rapid failure loop, but it will not correct a persistent underlying fault.

Create a systemd unit for the encoder
The example below is a unit-file skeleton, not a verified, universal FFmpeg command. Replace the user, paths, input, codecs, and output with values that match your system and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd can supervise the process it starts.

Do not put a real stream key in a public example or a unit file readable by every local user. Use a protected environment file or a credentials mechanism supported by your host’s systemd version, and restrict access to the secret. The illustrative output URL is not a guarantee that a particular endpoint, protocol, or key format is correct; use the stream URL and key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.

Check the service account and inputs
The User= account needs permission to read the source file or playlist and access any other files the encoder uses. Confirm the configured working directory exists and that paths in ExecStart= are valid on the target machine. A missing or unreadable input will cause repeated failures rather than a working loop.
Load, start, and verify the service
- Save the unit: Put it in
/etc/systemd/system/, for example/etc/systemd/system/youtube-music.service. Substitute your actual unit name in the commands below. - Tell systemd to read it: Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the unit. - Enable it at boot and start it now: Run
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-music.service. Enabling and starting are distinct from configuring automatic restarts after a process exit. - Inspect the local process: Run
sudo systemctl status youtube-music.service. To follow recent service output, runsudo journalctl -u youtube-music.service -f. - Confirm the platform receives it: Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream preview and health indicator. Do not treat a locally active service as proof of a healthy stream.
To verify the restart behavior, test only when it is safe to interrupt your broadcast: terminate the encoder process in a controlled way, then inspect the service status and logs for a new start. Do not use systemctl stop as that test; an explicit operator stop is not restarted by the configured policy.

Diagnose repeated failures and dropped streams
- The service fails immediately: Check
journalctlfor an invalid executable path, malformed command, unreadable input, or permissions problem. Correct the cause before relying on another restart attempt. - The encoder reconnects unsuccessfully: Verify the stream URL and key against YouTube Live Control Room, along with the network and ingest configuration. Restarting cannot make an invalid key or unreachable endpoint valid.
- systemd stops retrying: Repeated quick failures can hit start-rate limiting. Check
systemctl statusand the journal, fix the underlying error, then reset the failed state withsudo systemctl reset-failed youtube-music.servicebefore starting it again. - systemd says active but viewers get no stream: Check the encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and health information. The process can remain alive while its input, connection, or platform ingest is unusable.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: A process restart does not remove a copyright match or other platform restriction. Resolve the rights or platform issue rather than repeatedly relaunching the same stream.
For a long-running deployment, consider monitoring and alerting as well as restart behavior. A service that cycles through the same failure can look superficially automated while remaining unavailable.
Confirm the music and live-stream rights
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A match can result in a placeholder and warning; if the content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Use your own Linux host or let it run in the cloud
A local Linux computer or a hosted Linux server can run a systemd-supervised encoder. The local option uses equipment and connectivity you already control, but those must remain available; hosted infrastructure moves the machine off-site but requires you to maintain that server and its network. The right choice depends on your hardware, bandwidth, monitoring, and willingness to operate Linux. No particular hosting provider is established here.
