How to Add a Countdown Between Podcast Episodes on a YouTube Live Stream

Use an OBS countdown scene and Browser Source to show an intermission timer between podcast episodes without ending your YouTube live stream.

In OBS, create a separate countdown scene, add a timer as a Browser Source, and switch to that scene between podcast episodes. When the next episode is ready, switch back to the podcast scene. The timer becomes part of the video program OBS sends to YouTube; it does not pause or end the live broadcast.

Build the countdown scene in OBS

  1. Create two scenes. In OBS, make one scene for the podcast episode and another for the intermission countdown. Scenes let you arrange the video and audio sources that make up each view. See the OBS Studio overview.
  2. Add the timer to the countdown scene. In the Sources panel, add a Browser Source and load a countdown page by URL or a countdown file saved on your computer. OBS Browser Source supports both URLs and local files; see the Browser Source documentation. Choose a timer that can stay visible for the length of your break, then test it in the scene.
  3. Make the timer readable. Check its size and contrast in the OBS canvas at the resolution you plan to stream. Confirm how the timer starts and resets when you use it: that behavior depends on the page or file you choose, not on a universal OBS countdown setting.

Set up the episode handoff

Choose a transition

At the end of an episode, switch from the podcast scene to the countdown scene. OBS offers Cut and Fade transitions: a Cut changes immediately, while a Fade makes the change gradual. Rehearse the handoff so the transition fits the show’s pacing. With Studio Mode, you can prepare or check the next scene separately before taking it live. The OBS overview explains these scene and transition features.

Decide what viewers hear

A countdown is a visual element; changing scenes does not automatically decide what happens to your audio. Choose whether the break should have silence, music, or a host voiceover, and check which audio sources are active in the countdown scene. If you are stepping away, make sure an unattended microphone is muted. YouTube notes that its break overlay does not affect stream audio sources and advises muting a microphone when leaving; see YouTube’s live-stream monetization and breaks guidance.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. Get the encoder details. In YouTube Live Control Room, set up or open the stream and copy its connection details and stream key into your streaming software. Treat the stream key as private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
  2. Use the encoder workflow. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Follow the current YouTube RTMPS guidance and encoder setup instructions for the available settings in your Live Control Room.
  3. For a scheduled stream, check the preview before going live. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to start the encoder and then click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Keep the OBS output on the podcast scene until you are ready to use the intermission.

Rehearse before the broadcast

Run through the entire handoff before using it on air. YouTube also advises testing a break overlay before using it live. Check:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • The timer is legible at the intended stream resolution.
  • It stays visible for the required break and starts or resets as expected.
  • The scene change looks right, and you can return to the next episode cleanly.
  • The audio is what you intend viewers to hear throughout the break.
  • The encoder preview appears in Live Control Room before you take a scheduled stream live.

Choose between a web timer and a local file

OBS supports either a URL or a local file in Browser Source. The best choice depends on the particular timer you use; OBS documentation does not establish that one is universally better.

Option Useful consideration What to verify
Web URL Loads timer content from a web page. Whether it remains available if internet access drops, how it is styled, and whether it starts or resets when shown.
Local file Loads timer content stored on your computer. Whether the file works as expected in the OBS scene, how it is styled, and whether it starts or resets when shown.

Neither option has a guaranteed reset behavior or appearance; test the specific implementation in your actual scene and at your target canvas size.

Troubleshoot the countdown handoff

  • The timer is missing: Confirm the Browser Source is in the countdown scene and that its URL or local file is correct. Check its visibility and position in the scene, then test the source again.
  • The timer does not restart: The behavior depends on the timer page or file. Test how it behaves when the scene is shown again; do not assume switching scenes resets it.
  • The countdown is hard to read: Resize or reposition the source and check it at the stream’s intended resolution rather than judging only from a small preview.
  • Viewers hear the wrong audio: Check the audio sources active during the countdown scene and mute the microphone if you are stepping away. A visual overlay does not itself change the audio mix.
  • The broadcast does not appear live: Check that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube stream using the correct connection details and stream key. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview and then use Go live in Live Control Room.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the aim is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube broadcast running around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not provide a camera-based live feed or replace the OBS scene workflow for a manually operated podcast handoff.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the cloud stream to continue.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
