If you want a podcast playlist to start again at its first file after a YouTube Live connection drops, make FFmpeg exit and have a supervisor launch a new FFmpeg process. A retry handled inside the same FFmpeg process can restore the output connection while the playlist keeps advancing; it does not rewind the playlist.
First decide whether to resume or restart
“Reconnect” can describe two different recovery behaviors. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a failed output while the existing process continues. That is useful when you want playback to carry on through a temporary network problem. To replay from the first playlist entry, the process reading the playlist must end and a new process must open it.
| Recovery approach | What happens to the playlist | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | The same process continues; the source playlist generally keeps advancing. | A brief interruption where continuity matters. | It does not intentionally rewind. Depending on queue configuration, packets can be dropped if the queue overflows. |
| Supervisor relaunch after FFmpeg exits | A new process opens the same concat list from its beginning. | You specifically need to replay from file one. | There is a restart gap, and you must manage YouTube event behavior and prevent duplicate publishers. |
The FIFO muxer and a process supervisor solve different problems: one retries output inside a running process; the other starts a new process after exit. Avoid enabling automatic FIFO retries and an unconditional supervisor restart without deciding which layer owns recovery. If FIFO keeps FFmpeg alive, a supervisor waiting for FFmpeg to exit may never relaunch it.
Build an ordered playlist with the concat demuxer
For a fixed list of local podcast files, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer presents the files as one sequential input. The files need matching stream structures, including codecs and time bases. Duration metadata that is inaccurate or truncated can cause timestamp gaps or artifacts.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create the list. Make a text file with the directive
ffconcat version 1.0on the first line, followed by onefileentry for each episode in playback order. For example:ffconcat version 1.0 file '/media/podcast/episode-01.mp4' file '/media/podcast/episode-02.mp4'Use valid quoting or escaping for spaces and special characters in paths.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that each listed file has the same streams, codecs and time base. If the files need normalization or re-encoding, use FFmpeg’s concat filter rather than assuming the demuxer can join incompatible inputs.
- Have FFmpeg read the list. Use the list file as the input with the concat demuxer, for example
-f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/episodes.ffconcat. The-safe 0option permits paths that do not meet the demuxer’s safe-path rules; use it only when the list and its paths are trusted.
The concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each later file follows its predecessor. When stream lengths differ, gaps can occur. Review the playlist’s ordering and metadata if transitions do not behave as expected.
Make a new process reopen the list from the beginning
Use this pattern when the required recovery outcome is an intentional replay from episode one. The exact supervisor configuration depends on your operating system and how FFmpeg is launched; the essential condition is that the old FFmpeg process exits before the supervisor starts a new one.

- Configure the output to fail out when appropriate. Do not rely on FIFO retry if you need the supervisor to take over after an output failure. FIFO retry is designed to keep the process working through certain output failures, so it may prevent the exit your supervisor is waiting for.
- Run FFmpeg under one supervisor. Use a service manager or a restart loop to launch the command again when it exits. Each fresh process must open the same concat list as a new input; that is what starts reading from its beginning.
- Use a bounded delay and log restarts. Set a finite delay before retrying, and record the exit status and restart time. This makes repeated failures visible and avoids a rapid restart loop.
- Enforce one publisher per stream key. Ensure the previous process has stopped before its replacement publishes. Multiple FFmpeg instances sending to the same YouTube stream key can interfere with the stream.
- Verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the preview and stream health after restart, and confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended stream URL and key.
A process relaunch creates an interruption. Whether the YouTube event itself starts or stops automatically depends on the event’s settings; restarting FFmpeg is not the same thing as controlling the live event.
Check YouTube’s stream and ingest settings
Stream URL, key and event controls
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key configured for the event. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether the encoder can start or stop the stream; scheduled-stream workflows may instead require you to wait for preview and select Go live. Confirm the event’s actual settings before relying on an automatic restart.

RTMP or RTMPS keyframes
For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check that your encoder’s output matches YouTube’s current encoder guidance and inspect Live Control Room’s stream health after reconnecting.
HLS requirements are different
Do not apply HLS requirements as if they were generic RTMP flags. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance requires 1–4 second segments, MPEG-TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; byte ranges are not supported. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP.

Troubleshoot a playlist that does not restart as expected
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The stream reconnects, but playback continues at a later point. | Output retry recovered the connection inside the original FFmpeg process. | Choose between continuity and replay. For replay, let FFmpeg exit and have the supervisor launch a fresh process against the list. |
| The supervisor does not launch FFmpeg again. | FFmpeg is still running, perhaps because an internal retry is handling the output failure. | Check the process state and exit logs. Configure recovery so the supervisor can act on an actual process exit. |
| Episodes have gaps, artifacts or unexpected timing. | Concat inputs may have mismatched streams, time bases or inaccurate duration metadata. | Inspect file compatibility and metadata. If normalization or re-encoding is needed, use the concat filter. |
| The YouTube stream does not become live after FFmpeg restarts. | The encoder may be using the wrong stream URL or key, or the event’s start controls may require manual action. | Verify the event in Live Control Room, wait for preview, and follow its configured Go live or auto-start workflow. |
| Repeated reconnects or multiple active publishers appear. | Restart attempts may overlap, or output recovery and process supervision may be competing. | Allow only one FFmpeg process to publish with the key, add a bounded retry delay, and inspect logs to see which recovery layer is acting. |
| Ingest settings appear correct for one protocol but YouTube still reports issues. | RTMP/RTMPS and HLS have different requirements. | Confirm which protocol the encoder uses, then apply the matching YouTube guidance rather than mixing the two sets of settings. |
