What overlays and widget themes do
An overlay is the visual layout placed over a stream scene: it can include a starting-soon screen, a BRB or ending screen, a webcam frame, backgrounds, and labels. A widget theme styles functional elements such as alerts, chat, goals, and event lists. A bundled design may include both, but its components vary, so inspect the listing before installing.
Streamlabs’ library offers designs organized by styles, games, and stream categories, along with search and filters. Its FAQ describes many library designs as free; access to the full theme library is included with Streamlabs Ultra. How to choose an overlay or widget theme
Start with how the scene will be used, not just its thumbnail. Compare the options that matter to your setup:

- Visual style and colors: Look for a design that suits your game or channel and remains legible against the gameplay.
- Included components: Check whether you need a live-scene layout, webcam frame, starting-soon or BRB screens, alert box, chat, event list, or goal widget. Not every bundle contains every element.
- Matching widgets: If alerts or chat should match the scene, choose a design with related widget themes or plan to install those separately.
- Orientation: Confirm whether the design fits your output. Streamlabs says its Dual Output collection includes horizontal and vertical layouts; other designs may not provide both.
- Access: Check whether the particular design is free or requires Ultra. The full library is an Ultra benefit, while many designs are available free. [c001]
- Installation route: Choose a library design for a ready-made setup, import a local
.overlayfile if you already have one, or build scenes manually if you want to assemble the sources yourself.
Find designs with library search
- Open the Streamlabs library and browse featured designs or collections organized around styles, games, and stream categories. [c001]
- Open Advanced Search to narrow results by keyword, preferred colors, type, or matching widget themes. [c001]
- Open a design that looks suitable and review its component list before deciding. A bundle might include starting-soon, BRB, and ending screens alongside live-scene elements and widgets; the exact contents vary by design. [c001]
- If the results are too narrow, reset the filters and search again with fewer constraints. If the design needs to match both horizontal and vertical output, look specifically for a collection that supports both rather than assuming every overlay does. [c001]
Install a library overlay
- In the library, select the overlay design you want and choose Select and Install. [c002]
- Choose which of the listed components to add. You do not have to install every available element if you only need part of the bundle. [c002]
- When prompted, open Streamlabs Desktop and confirm the installation. [c002]
- Find the installed overlay in the scene collection, then inspect and adjust its scenes as needed. [c002]
Streamlabs’ installation guide also describes library installation for OBS Studio. Follow the guide’s OBS-specific prompts rather than assuming the Desktop confirmation steps apply unchanged. [c002]
Import a local overlay file
If you already have an overlay file, Streamlabs Desktop can import an existing .overlay file. [c002]

- Open Streamlabs Desktop and go to Settings.
- Open Scene Collections.
- Choose Import Overlay File, select your
.overlayfile, and wait for the import to finish. - Open the imported scenes and adjust them for your sources and layout.
Use this route for a local overlay file; a library installation and a manual scene build are different workflows. [c002]
Build scenes manually
When you want to assemble a layout yourself, create a fresh scene collection and add the elements you need manually. This offers control over the scene composition, but you will need to add and arrange its sources rather than relying on a ready-made bundle. Streamlabs recommends professionally designed library overlays when you want a coordinated design with matching widgets included. [c002]

Install a widget theme
Widget themes style the widgets themselves; installing one is a separate choice from adding an overlay layout. [c001]
- Open the widget-theme library and select the theme you want.
- Choose Select and Install.
- In the popup, choose which widgets to update, then install the theme. [c001]
- Check the relevant widget settings to confirm the intended theme is active.
Streamlabs’ Alert Box instructions also describe creating an alert theme from scratch: open the Alert Box theme dropdown, choose Add a Theme, name the theme, and start from either the current settings or Streamlabs defaults. [c004]

Customize the active theme without changing the wrong widgets
Before editing widget styles, check the active theme on the dashboard’s Widget Themes page or in the theme dropdown on a widget settings page. Streamlabs warns that style edits apply to the currently active theme. If the wrong theme is selected, your changes may affect a different set of widget styling than you intended. [c004]
- Open the dashboard’s Widget Themes page or the theme dropdown in the widget’s settings.
- Confirm the theme you want to change is active.
- Make the widget-style edits, then check the affected widget before updating other themes.
