Prevent duplicate episodes by checking the right record of state for the way your playlist is populated. For YouTube’s RSS import, choose a starting point after the latest episode already on the channel. For a playlist automation, compare the incoming YouTube video ID with the IDs already in the target playlist, then treat YouTube’s documented duplicate response as a successful no-op. A separate 24/7 scheduler may keep its own queue or playback history, so verify that behavior with its provider.
First identify where the duplicate is coming from
An always-on podcast stream can involve three separate records: the RSS feed’s episodes, the YouTube videos created from them, and a scheduler’s playlist queue or playback history. Those records do not automatically stay in sync. Use the control that matches the source of the duplicate rather than relying on release dates or assuming that a playlist prevents repeat playback.
- YouTube RSS import: Choose the correct episode starting point when connecting the feed.
- Your playlist automation: Check the target playlist for the candidate video ID before inserting it.
- A separate stream scheduler: Check its own exclusion, queue, and history settings; test what happens after a restart.
Prevent duplicates when YouTube imports an RSS feed
Before connecting an existing podcast to an RSS feed, inspect the channel and identify the newest episode already uploaded. In YouTube’s RSS setup, choose a start point after that episode. YouTube recommends this cutoff to avoid uploading duplicates. Verify the selection against the channel’s actual episode history before saving: a cutoff that is too early can bring older episodes into the upload process.
- Review the YouTube channel’s existing podcast episodes and find the most recent one.
- When connecting the RSS feed, set the episode start point after that existing episode.
- Check the selected point before confirming the feed connection.
- After setup, remember that new episodes in the feed are automatically uploaded. RSS ingestion is available only in selected countries and regions; availability depends on your location.
Do not use the RSS release date as a unique episode identifier or as proof that an episode has already uploaded. YouTube says the feed’s release date is not verified. Use the episode’s identity and its YouTube upload state instead.

If you delete or correct an episode
Deleting a YouTube copy does not remove the episode from the RSS feed. YouTube says an episode can be uploaded again if it remains in the feed. If you need to hide the YouTube copy while keeping feed continuity, consider making it private; if you delete it, also remove it from the RSS feed to prevent it from returning.
YouTube’s documented re-upload action for a corrected audio file creates a new video and makes the previous video private. The replacement has a new YouTube video ID, so update any playlist automation or saved episode-to-video mapping that refers to the old ID.

Prevent duplicates in a playlist automation
For a script or other automation that adds YouTube videos to a playlist, use the video ID as the membership check. The YouTube API exposes the video identifier in playlist items, and its playlist-items list method retrieves those entries. Check before inserting, but also handle YouTube’s duplicate response in case another run adds the same item between your check and insert.
- Identify the destination playlist ID and the incoming YouTube video ID.
- List the destination playlist’s items and collect their video IDs.
- If the incoming ID is already present, skip the insert. If it is absent, insert the item using the playlist ID and video resource ID.
- Persist processed episode identifiers between runs so retries or overlapping workers do not repeat work. For reconciliation between systems, store the RSS episode GUID alongside the resulting YouTube video ID. This is an engineering safeguard, not a YouTube-required data format.
- If YouTube returns
videoAlreadyInPlaylist, record the item as already handled and stop retrying that insert.
Google’s current API reference, accessed in 2026, lists a quota cost of 1 unit for playlistItems.list and 50 units for playlistItems.insert. Checking before writing avoids unnecessary insert calls, while the duplicate response remains a useful safeguard against race conditions.

Keep playlist membership separate from stream playback history
A YouTube podcast show is represented as a playlist, with episodes as videos in that playlist. YouTube recommends full-length episodes in listening order and discourages mixing clips, different shows, or videos from other channels into a podcast playlist. A series playlist is a separate feature, not a general deduplication mechanism; YouTube says a video cannot appear in more than one series playlist.
A scheduler that plays a playlist continuously may use a cached queue or maintain separate playback history. The YouTube Help and API references cited here do not establish how any particular scheduler handles those states. Check the scheduler’s current documentation for controls that exclude played items or reset history, then test whether a previously played episode returns after restarting the scheduler. Do not assume that removing an item from the YouTube playlist immediately updates a queue the scheduler has already cached.

Common duplicate problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Older episodes appear after connecting RSS | The selected starting point was earlier than the newest episode already on YouTube. | Review the channel’s actual episode history and correct the RSS starting point. YouTube’s RSS release date is not verified, so do not use it alone to infer upload state. |
| A deleted RSS episode returns | The episode is still present in the feed. | Remove it from the RSS feed as well, or consider making the YouTube video private if you want it hidden while preserving feed continuity. |
An API insert reports videoAlreadyInPlaylist |
The video is already in the playlist, possibly because another run inserted it after your membership check. | Treat the response as an already-completed operation. Do not retry the same insert endlessly. |
| A corrected episode appears as a separate playlist item | The documented re-upload action created a new video ID. | Update the automation’s ID mapping and playlist as needed; the old video is made private by that re-upload action. |
| An episode plays again after the playlist was changed | The scheduler may have a cached queue or independent history. | Check its queue and exclusion settings, then test its behavior after a restart using that scheduler’s current documentation. |
