A pin can make a short prompt more noticeable to people reading Live Chat; whether that visibility leads to subscriptions is something each channel must measure. Treat it as a small experiment, not a proven growth trick.
What pinning does—and does not—do
YouTube lets a creator pin their own message or a viewer’s message in Live Chat. The creator controls the pin, and only one message can be pinned at a time; pinning another replaces the existing one. Pinned messages appear below Super Chat in the chat interface. That placement may help a prompt stand out to people who are following chat, but YouTube’s documentation does not say that pinned messages increase subscriptions. The distinction matters for a 24/7 stream: a message can be visible without reaching viewers who are not watching or reading chat, and visibility alone does not establish that viewers will subscribe. The evidence available does not establish a causal effect or a typical conversion rate for pinned subscribe prompts on continuous streams.
Make the prompt useful, not disruptive
If you try a pin, make it concise and specific to the channel. Give viewers a genuine reason to subscribe, such as the kind of regular stream or programming they can expect, rather than asking without context. YouTube Live Chat allows up to 11 messages every 30 seconds and 200 characters per message, and URLs are not allowed in chat. Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. Keep the prompt short and do not rely on a pasted link as the call to action. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams.

A creator pin is not the same as Super Chat, YouTube’s paid highlighted message. A 2017 YouTube Blog post described Super Chats as potentially remaining pinned for up to five hours; that historical description is about the paid feature, not the duration of an ordinary creator pin, and should not be read as current guidance for ordinary pins. Test whether it works for your channel
To find out whether a pin helps your audience convert, compare periods with the prompt pinned against comparable periods without it. This is a practical measurement approach, not a YouTube-published test result.

- Choose comparable windows. Keep the stream format, schedule, title, thumbnail, promotion, and other calls to action as stable as practical. Use enough windows to avoid mistaking ordinary day-to-day variation for an effect.
- Track conversion, not just totals. Compare subscriber gains per unique viewer or watch-hour. Also watch concurrent viewers, returning viewers, chat activity, and uptime to understand what else may have changed.
- Note unusual changes. If the audience or schedule shifts substantially, annotate or leave out that period rather than treating it as a clean comparison.
- Review the result and the chat. Keep the pin only if it appears useful without crowding out viewer questions or community information. Revise or remove it if it distracts from conversation or shows no measurable benefit.
Raw subscriber totals can mislead: a busier period may bring more subscriptions even if the pin made no difference. A comparison of conversion alongside audience and stream conditions gives you a more useful channel-specific signal, though it still may not prove that the pin alone caused a change.
Do not confuse chat placement with discovery
YouTube’s September 16, 2025 announcement described planned Live features involving reach across horizontal and vertical formats, live reactions to other content, and turning highlights into Shorts. It did not attribute discovery or channel growth to pinned subscribe messages. YouTube said that over 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content in Q2 2025; that is platform-wide context, not a statistic about 24/7 streams, pinned prompts, or subscription conversion. For a channel, consider these as different questions: a pin changes placement within chat, discovery features affect how viewers may encounter Live content, and a channel’s own measurement shows whether subscriptions change. Evidence for one mechanism should not be presented as evidence for another.
