To stream a podcast archive to YouTube Live with Docker, run FFmpeg in a container, mount your media into it, and send a real-time audio/video feed to the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. An audio-only archive also needs a video track, such as static cover art. The exact FFmpeg settings depend on your files and host, so test the full setup before using it for a public broadcast.
Before you start
This method assumes Docker and its daemon are already available on a host that can remain online, your channel can go live, your network has enough upload capacity, and you have permission to rebroadcast every item in the archive. Check current YouTube requirements for live access and encoder settings before publishing.
- Have the archive files available on the Docker host.
- Choose a video treatment for audio-only episodes, such as a static image or visualizer.
- Keep your YouTube stream key private. It is a channel-specific credential: do not publish it in a compose file, command example, shell history, or logs.
Create the YouTube broadcast and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance requires the
rtmpsprotocol and a valid ingestion endpoint; the connection uses port 443. Use the values shown for your channel or returned for your stream through the LiveStreams API, not sample credentials. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and LiveStreams API documentation. - Leave Live Control Room available for preview and stream-health monitoring. Do not share the key with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
Mount the podcast archive into Docker
A bind mount makes a host directory visible inside the container. For playback, mount the archive read-only where practical so the container can read the files without modifying them. Docker volumes are another option when you need Docker-managed storage that persists beyond a container’s writable layer.
For example, if your archive is on the host at /srv/podcast-archive, make it available inside the container at /media. These paths are examples; replace them with paths that exist on your host. Confirm from inside the container that the expected files are present and readable. Docker’s documentation explains bind mounts.

Check file names, permissions, and available space before starting the encoder. If the archive is mounted read-only, write any logs or separate local recordings to a different writable location.
Inspect the media and choose the video and audio tracks
FFmpeg’s inputs and stream mappings must match the actual files. Inspect the archive first, including whether each file has audio, video, or both, its codecs, frame size, frame rate, audio sample rate, and channel layout. A video encoder cannot send an audio-only feed as a normal audio/video stream without a video track; add an appropriate visual input such as cover art or a visualizer.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For stereo AAC it gives 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz guidance. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every source file or encoding configuration will work. Confirm the current YouTube encoder settings, then choose a resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder that your host can sustain.
If episodes have different formats, test transitions rather than assuming FFmpeg can concatenate them without changes. A single combined file and a playlist of separate files involve different transition behavior, metadata needs, and recovery choices. Whether joins are gapless depends on your files and implementation.

Run FFmpeg in real time and send it to YouTube
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop for repeating an input and -re for reading at native speed. A generic command shape is below, not a tested turnkey invocation: input options, stream maps, codecs, encoding settings, and output URL must be adapted to your media and current YouTube settings.

The sample’s 30 fps and 60-frame GOP correspond to a two-second interval at that frame rate; align keyframe interval with the actual output frame rate and YouTube’s current recommendations. If your source does not match the selected output, explicitly map and encode the intended streams. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for input looping, real-time pacing, stream mapping, and output options.
For multiple episodes, decide how your implementation advances between files and what should happen at end-of-playlist. Test timestamps, audio continuity, transitions, and whether playback resumes at a sensible point after a disconnect. Do not assume a restart policy alone restores the correct episode or produces a seamless broadcast.

Test, monitor, and stop the broadcast safely
- Start with an unlisted test broadcast and confirm YouTube receives the stream in Live Control Room.
- Preview the video and listen for the start, middle, episode boundaries, and end. Check YouTube’s stream health and verify the archive files locally.
- Watch the container and host for FFmpeg errors, file-access failures, CPU limits, and network interruptions. A Docker restart policy such as
unless-stoppedcan restart an exited container, but it does not guarantee a gapless stream, restore a YouTube broadcast after a failed connection, or preserve playback position. Docker describes container restart policies. - When the broadcast is finished, stop FFmpeg deliberately and end the broadcast in Live Control Room. Confirm the YouTube archive and any separate local recording you intended to keep.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that statement for longer continuous broadcasts. If the full output matters, maintain a separate recording plan and check YouTube’s current live-stream setup guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Recheck the RTMPS protocol, server URL, stream key, and network access to port 443. Copy the channel’s current values again rather than relying on an old URL or key.
- The container cannot open a file: Check the host path, mount destination, file name, and permissions from inside the container. Make sure the archive is mounted where the FFmpeg input path expects it.
- Audio plays but the video is blank or rejected: An audio-only input has no video track. Add a valid visual input and map it alongside audio, then test the result in Live Control Room.
- The broadcast stutters or the host struggles: Check whether the chosen resolution, frame rate, and encoder exceed available CPU/GPU capacity or upload bandwidth. Reduce the encoding workload or output settings and test again against YouTube’s current guidance.
- The stream stops at an episode boundary or end of file: Review the playlist or loop logic, file compatibility, and FFmpeg output behavior. Reproduce the transition in a test stream; the correct handling depends on how the files are fed to FFmpeg.
- A restart begins at the wrong place or fails to reconnect: A container restart policy only controls restarting the process. Design and test connection recovery and playback-position behavior explicitly; FFmpeg’s muxer manual includes a generic RTMP FIFO recovery example, but it is not a validated YouTube recipe or proof of seamless playback.
