A label such as S, M, or L is not a measurement: a body chart describes the wearer, while a garment chart describes the finished item. Tell shoppers which one they are viewing and how to use it.
Choose the right kind of size chart
Start by deciding what your measurements describe. Body measurements help a shopper match their own dimensions to a size recommendation. Garment measurements describe the finished clothing and include the room and shape built into its cut. Do not invite shoppers to compare the two directly.

If you provide both types, label them clearly and use corresponding measurement points where possible. That helps customers understand how the garment’s intended room relates to the body chart. UNIQLO’s customer guidance makes the same distinction: use body measurements to select from a body chart, and compare product measurements with a similar item—not directly with the wearer’s body.
Build a chart for each product family
Use the measurements that explain how that particular garment fits. A chart that omits the feature shoppers need to judge—such as inseam for trousers or sleeve length for a top—may leave them guessing. Shopify’s sizing guidance suggests these useful points:

- T-shirts and knit tops: chest or bust, shoulder, body length, and sleeve.
- Dresses: bust, waist, hip, and length; shoulder can also matter for some designs.
- Pants: waist, hips, rise, thigh, inseam, and leg opening.
These are starting points, not a universal checklist. Choose points that matter to the style and make sure the labels match your measurement method. If you resell merchandise, request the supplier’s chart for each product or style. If you make it, measure samples across the sizes you sell. Do not copy one item’s chart onto another cut without checking it.
Explain how to measure and compare
For a body-measurement chart
- Label the chart “body measurements” and identify the body points shoppers need to measure.
- Give brief instructions for placing the tape and taking each measurement. A flexible measuring tape is an optional, practical tool for this.
- Tell customers to compare their body measurements with the chart ranges, rather than treating a garment measurement as a body-size recommendation.
For a garment-measurement chart
- Label it “garment measurements” and describe how the item was measured.
- Ask shoppers to lay a similar garment with a preferred fit flat and measure the same points shown in your chart.
- Compare like with like. For example, a half-chest measurement taken across a garment is not the same as a full body-chest circumference.
Keep the instructions consistent with the chart’s labels. Biz Collection describes a half-chest method in its guide; Angel advises measuring a well-fitting shirt or sweatshirt from side to side below the sleeve join. Those examples are useful only when the method matches the values on the chart.

Describe fit and answer “I’m between sizes” carefully
A size label is not a universal dimension. Measurements can vary between brands and between products from the same brand because of cut, fabric, and silhouette. Pair the chart with a plain-language fit description, such as fitted, regular, or easy, and make the description specific to the item. Biz Collection also uses terms including semi-fitted and tailored.
If a shopper falls between sizes, give advice only when the product’s construction and fit information support it. A fitted style and an easy-fitting style may call for different guidance; a blanket instruction to always size up or down can mislead. Add a product-specific note explaining the intended fit or relevant design detail when you have reliable information for that item.

Production variation should also be described using your own supplier or manufacturing information. For context, Angel’s support page, updated June 2, 2026, says its products may vary by up to 1/2 inch in either direction. UNIQLO’s guidance gives an approximate 1–2 cm variation for product measurements, with a different stated range for belts. Those are retailer-specific disclosures, not a general apparel tolerance to copy into your own chart.
Make the chart easy to find and read
- Use clear units: choose units that suit your main market and keep them consistent across the chart. A dual-unit view or toggle can help if you sell internationally.
- Put it near the buying decision: make the chart easy to open from the relevant product page.
- Assign charts to the right products: check that shoppers see the chart for the specific style and cut they are considering.
- Keep the presentation legible on mobile: customers should be able to find the instructions and compare measurements without struggling to read the chart.
A size-chart app is one possible way to present charts in a store platform such as Shopify, but an app cannot verify that your measurements are accurate. Shopify App Store’s Smart Size Chart & Size Guide listing describes capabilities such as templates, unit conversion, customization, mobile presentation, and multiple-language support. Treat those as listing claims and check the current listing, pricing, and platform compatibility before choosing a tool; the listing alone does not establish that an app reduces returns or improves conversion.

A practical setup checklist for your store
- Collect product-specific information. Get the supplier’s chart for each style you resell, or record sample and finished-garment dimensions for products you make.
- Choose the chart type. Decide whether shoppers need body measurements, garment measurements, or both, and label each clearly.
- Select relevant points. Cover the measurements that affect fit for that product family and match the terms to the way they are measured.
- Write short instructions. Explain how to take body measurements or how to lay a similar garment flat and compare corresponding dimensions.
- Add fit context. Describe the item’s intended fit and include between-size advice only when you can support it with item-specific information.
- Check units and placement. Keep units consistent and make the chart accessible from the product page on both desktop and mobile.
- Review every chart against its products. Update it when a supplier, pattern, fabric, or cut changes rather than assuming an old chart still applies.
