To start a podcast, shape a sustainable show, record an episode, choose how to host its audio and RSS feed, then test and submit the feed to directories such as Apple Podcasts. You can also publish episodes on YouTube, which treats podcasts as playlists of videos. A particular microphone or paid hosting service is not a universal requirement; the right setup depends on how much feed control and maintenance you want.
1. Define a show you can keep making
Before buying equipment or choosing a host, decide what listeners can expect and what you can reliably produce. These are editorial choices, not platform requirements.
- Audience: Who is the show for? For a gaming creator, that might be players of a particular genre, a community around your channel, or people interested in game development.
- Promise: What will each episode help listeners understand, enjoy, or follow?
- Format: Choose solo commentary, interviews, co-hosted conversation, or a narrative format. Consider how much preparation and editing each entails.
- Schedule: Pick a rhythm you can sustain alongside your other creator work. A dependable schedule is more useful than an ambitious one you cannot maintain.
- Launch plan: Write a short show description and outline several episode ideas so the concept is not dependent on a single recording.
2. Record and edit your first episode
Make an initial episode before committing to a complex production setup. A microphone can help capture spoken audio, but Apple’s podcast documentation does not mandate a particular microphone, audio interface, headphones, or room treatment. Choose gear to suit your room, recording method, and budget rather than treating a specific model as a prerequisite.
Record a short test, listen back on headphones, and address obvious problems such as inconsistent volume, distracting background noise, or interruptions before recording the full episode. Edit for clarity: remove avoidable pauses and errors, but preserve the pacing and personality that fit your format. Keep an uncompressed project or original recording if you may want to revise the episode later.

3. Choose how to host the audio and RSS feed
An RSS feed is the distribution file used by many podcast services to find a show and its episodes. A podcast host can create and manage that feed; Apple also permits creators to generate and host a feed independently. Apple puts the host role simply: “A hosting provider takes the elements that form your podcast and creates an RSS feed.” (Apple Podcasts for Creators: Find a hosting solution.)
Use a podcast host
A host may reduce the technical work of maintaining the feed and offer additional tools. Compare services against what you actually need, such as analytics, storage, migration options, transcripts, chapters, video, subscriptions, or advertising tools. Check current prices, limits, and terms directly with each provider; they vary and are not established here.

Host the feed yourself
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the feed and media files, but you are responsible for serving a valid, publicly accessible RSS feed and maintaining the episode files and URLs. Apple specifies that servers should support HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests. If you are not prepared to maintain those requirements, a host that manages the feed may be the simpler choice.
Whichever path you choose, consider the cost of switching later. Keep track of the feed address and understand how your host supports migration before you submit the show to directories.

4. Prepare a feed Apple Podcasts can accept
Apple’s RSS requirements call for a public RSS 2.0 feed with required tags, show artwork, and at least one episode. Each episode needs an enclosure containing its media URL, length, and type, along with a globally unique identifier (GUID) that stays the same over time. Tag casing matters, so avoid editing feed fields casually or assuming differently capitalized tags are interchangeable. See Apple’s podcast RSS feed requirements.
Check the episode entries as well as the show-level information: media links must work, and identifiers should remain stable when you update the feed. Apple’s guidance also calls for server support for HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests, which let podcast apps inspect and retrieve media appropriately.

5. Export audio for your chosen route
Apple accepts MP3 or AAC audio for episodes submitted through an RSS feed and publishes technical recommendations that vary by sample rate and whether a recording is mono or stereo. Apple recommends AAC for RSS episodes. Consult its current audio requirements when exporting; also check your host’s upload limits, since they may add requirements beyond Apple’s.
Do not assume that one export setting works for every destination. Keep a clean master and make the delivery file in a format accepted by the host and platforms you intend to use. For episode-specific information, follow Apple’s episode creation guidance.

6. Test the feed, then submit your show
- Review the feed and media. Check that the feed is public, the artwork and descriptions are correct, and episode links open. Confirm that enclosures and stable GUIDs are present.
- Test before submitting. Apple recommends testing the RSS feed so you can inspect artwork, metadata, streaming, and downloads. Follow its RSS feed testing guidance.
- Validate technical compliance. Use Apple’s podcast validation guidance to check the feed. A successful technical validation is not the same as approval of the show.
- Submit through Apple Podcasts Connect or a participating host. Complete the show details and the declarations and settings Apple requests, which may include rights, contact information, territories, release timing, and transcript settings. Apple reviews submissions after validation; technical compliance alone does not guarantee acceptance. See Apple’s new-show submission guidance.
Once accepted into Apple’s catalog, a show can be available in over 170 countries and regions, according to Apple’s current distribution guidance. That is a statement about Apple’s catalog reach, not a forecast of how many people will listen. Apple also distinguishes catalog distribution from listeners following an RSS feed directly: direct RSS following has narrower discovery features. Read how Apple Podcasts distributes shows before choosing how you want listeners to find the show.
7. Decide whether to publish on YouTube too
YouTube defines a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos. You can create a podcast in YouTube Studio or, where the feature is available, connect an RSS feed. Audio can be presented with a static show image or an audiogram; an audio feed alone is not the same thing as a conventional video recording. YouTube’s discovery features, analytics, availability, and eligibility are governed by its current platform rules.
For the current options and platform-specific requirements, see YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance and instructions to create a podcast in YouTube Studio. Treat YouTube as an additional publishing route, not a substitute for deciding where your audio feed will live.
8. Common launch problems and how to address them
- The feed cannot be found or fetched: Check that it is publicly accessible and that the feed server meets Apple’s stated requirements, including HTTP HEAD and byte-range support. Ask your host to investigate server issues if it manages the feed.
- An episode is missing or will not play: Check the enclosure URL, media availability, declared file length and type, and the host’s upload limits. Test both streaming and downloading as Apple recommends.
- Feed validation fails: Review required RSS tags and their exact casing, show artwork, the presence of an episode, and each episode’s enclosure and GUID. Correct the feed and test it again before submission.
- A corrected episode appears as a new one: Check whether its GUID changed. Apple requires each episode’s globally unique identifier to remain stable; changing it can affect how services recognize an episode.
- The show passes validation but is not approved: Validation checks technical compliance; Apple separately reviews a submitted show. Check the submission status and Apple’s requested show details or declarations rather than treating validation as approval.
- Audio uploads to one destination but not another: Compare the file with both Apple’s current MP3 or AAC guidance and the host’s own limits. Export a compliant delivery version instead of assuming all destinations accept the same settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you also want to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video, StreamNeo is a separate option from podcast hosting: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans; to try it, start the free day.
