To add chapter-like timestamps to a YouTube stream replay, open the archived video in YouTube Studio, edit its description, and enter a list of elapsed video timestamps with short labels. Start at 00:00, add at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. First check what replay YouTube actually captured: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Check that the replay exists and covers the right period
Do not assume a nominally continuous 24/7 stream becomes one complete archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Open the Live area in YouTube Studio and identify the available replay or replays, then check each video’s duration before planning its chapters. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance describes this limitation.
If the broadcast spans multiple archived videos, make a separate timestamp list for each one. A timestamp must point to a position within the specific replay being edited, not to the broadcast’s overall start time.
Add manual chapters in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and locate the archived stream under the live or replay content list.
- Open the replay’s details and find the Description field.
- Seek through the video and note the elapsed position of each moment you want viewers to find, such as a game change, featured event, or shift in the broadcast.
- Enter one timestamp and title per line. For example:
00:00 Stream begins
01:24:30 Night shift begins
06:10:00 Featured event - Check the chapter rules below, save the description, and review the replay as a viewer to confirm the labels land on the intended moments.
YouTube’s Video Chapters help page says chapters divide a video into sections with individual previews. For a replay, use the elapsed time from the beginning of that archived video. YouTube’s guidance does not separately define a special 24/7 live-replay clock convention, so treat elapsed-time positioning as the practical interpretation and verify it by seeking in the saved replay.

Chapter-list requirements
- The first timestamp must be
00:00. - Include at least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- Each chapter must last at least 10 seconds.
Use replay positions, not broadcast wall-clock labels such as 14:30 UTC, unless that value is also the elapsed position in the video. Keep the labels concise: YouTube’s video settings page sets a 5,000-character limit for descriptions, including any text already there. See YouTube’s video settings guidance.
Check that the chapters display
After saving, open the replay in its watch page and test the chapter divisions and labels. If they do not appear, recheck the starting timestamp, count, order, minimum intervals, and whether the timestamps match the replay timeline. Chapters may also be unavailable if the channel has an active strike or the content is considered potentially inappropriate; access to Advanced features may be required. YouTube’s chapter guidance explains these eligibility limits.

Manual chapters or automatic chapters?

For a replay with known game events or segments, manual chapters are the more dependable way to label the moments you want viewers to revisit. Automatic chapters can still be useful when enabled, but do not assume every replay will receive them. Chapters improve navigation and add context; YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish that they increase search ranking, impressions, or views.
