Run a merch giveaway by publishing clear official rules before entries open, making entry free, choosing and contacting the winner exactly as promised, and planning fulfillment before you announce the prize. You—not Twitch or YouTube—are responsible for administering the promotion. Platform rules apply, and giveaway laws vary by location.
Plan the giveaway before you announce it
Start with a prize you can actually provide and a process you can administer. Decide what the merch is, how many prizes are available, where you can ship it, and how you will select and reach the winner. Then write the rules and make them available before asking viewers to enter.
Choose and describe the prize
Specify the item or bundle, number of winners, available sizes or variants, shipping destinations, and any substitution terms. Include an approximate value if useful, but do not describe a generic shirt as custom channel merch unless it genuinely carries your branding. Budget for packaging and shipping as well as the item itself.
Merch can mean a T-shirt, hoodie, hat, or another item that suits your channel. One Twitch-hosted promotion’s 2023 official rules, for example, listed six first-prize winners, each receiving a 14-item clothing bundle with an approximate retail value of $535; delivery was limited to the United States or Canada. Those figures describe that particular promotion, not a typical prize budget.

Set dates, eligibility, and entry limits
Choose the opening and closing dates and state the time zone. Define who may enter, including age and residency limits, any excluded people, and any guardian process required for minors. Do not advertise worldwide eligibility if you have not confirmed you can legally and practically deliver to every eligible location.
Decide how the winner will be selected
Say whether the winner will be chosen at random or judged. For a judged entry, publish the criteria. State when and how you will contact the winner, how long they have to respond, and what happens if they are ineligible, unreachable, or unable to receive the prize. If you plan to select an alternate, explain that procedure in advance.
Write official rules viewers can follow
Rules should make the promotion possible to run exactly as advertised. Put them somewhere entrants can open before entering, and make the entry method, deadline, prize, and eligibility easy to find.

- Organizer: Identify the person or organization running the giveaway and provide a contact method.
- Promotion period: Give the opening and closing date, time, and time zone.
- Eligibility: State minimum age, eligible locations, exclusions, and any guardian requirements.
- Entry: Describe the free action that counts, any entry limit, and conduct that may disqualify an entry.
- Prize: Describe the merch, quantity, relevant variants, shipping area, and any substitution terms.
- Winner process: Explain selection method, notification channel, response deadline, and alternate-winner or unclaimed-prize process.
- Platform disclaimer and disclosures: Include the platform-specific language and legal disclosures required for your promotion.
- Privacy: Explain what information you collect from a winner, why you need it, and how it will be handled.
YouTube requires official rules, a legally compliant privacy notice, and rules that link to the YouTube Community Guidelines. Its policy also requires the rules to say YouTube is not a sponsor and to release YouTube from contest liability. The contest must be conducted and prizes awarded as the rules state. How do I run a merch giveaway on Twitch?
Twitch treats the streamer as the promotion’s promoter. The streamer is responsible for compliance with applicable law, official rules, administration, winner selection, issuing the prize, and any required permissions, registrations, or bonds. Twitch may remove a promotion it reasonably believes violates its terms or the law, and it does not sponsor or endorse promotions.

On YouTube, yes: the contest must be free to enter. YouTube also prohibits manipulating views, likes, dislikes, or subscriber metrics to misrepresent genuine engagement. Do not make a purchase, paid subscription, donation, like, or subscription count the price of entering a YouTube contest. The policy states: “Your contest must be free of charge to enter (don’t forget to check your local lottery laws!).”

In the United States, FTC guidance warns that purchase-required sweepstakes-type promotions are illegal. State requirements may also involve disclosures, licensing, or bonds, and rules vary. This is a general US-level orientation, not a determination that a particular giveaway is legal. Check the law that applies to the organizer and entrants before settling on mechanics. YouTube’s policy is at YouTube contest policies and guidelines; the FTC overview is at FTC guidance on sweepstakes and lotteries.
On Twitch, do not assume that a mechanic allowed by one platform is allowed by another or by local law. Keep entry requirements simple, disclose them in the rules, and get jurisdiction-specific advice when the promotion’s mechanics or reach raise legal questions.
Run entries, select the winner, and fulfill the prize
- Publish the rules first. Put the rules where viewers can read them before entries open. Keep a copy of the final version and the giveaway announcement.
- Explain entry on stream. Tell viewers the free entry action, deadline, eligibility limits, and where to find the full rules. Read or display the platform disclaimer where required.
- Close entries at the stated time. Apply the published entry limit and eligibility conditions consistently. Do not change the method or deadline midway through the promotion without checking the rules and applicable law.
- Select the winner using the stated method. Keep a record of the selection and the relevant entry, without exposing entrants’ private information.
- Contact the winner privately through the stated channel. Ask only for information needed to confirm eligibility and arrange delivery. Never ask a winner to post a home address in public chat.
- Ship as promised or follow the stated alternate process. Keep delivery confirmation. If the winner does not respond or cannot receive the prize, follow the response window and alternate-winner procedure in the rules.
Protect entrant information and disclose brand relationships
Collect personal information only when needed to administer the giveaway or ship the prize. Tell the winner how you will use it, keep it out of public chat, and follow the privacy notice and applicable privacy law. Do not promise global shipping until you have checked delivery costs, restrictions, and fulfillment.

If a brand provides the prize in exchange for promotion, disclose that relationship where required. FTC guidance notes that free products or other value exchanged for promotion can trigger endorsement rules; an incentive such as contest entry may matter if it affects how viewers assess an endorsement. Common giveaway problems and fixes
- Viewers are unsure how to enter: State one clear, free entry action and link the full rules in the stream description or another easy-to-find location.
- A winner cannot receive the merch: State shipping destinations and eligibility limits up front; use the alternate process described in the rules.
- The winner does not respond: Give a response deadline and a notification method in advance, then apply the announced procedure consistently.
- Viewers post personal details publicly: Ask them not to share addresses in chat. Collect delivery information privately from the selected winner only.
- A sponsor supplied the prize: Make the relationship clear where required and check the platform’s current branded-content rules.
