To send a Winamp playlist to YouTube Live, play it in Winamp, capture its audio in OBS, then send OBS’s stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. On supported Windows systems, OBS can capture Winamp directly; capturing the audio output device is the fallback. Preview the feed and check the sound before going live. This streams Winamp playback through OBS—it is not a guide to running a SHOUTcast broadcast server.
Before you begin
- YouTube Live access: Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Software: Winamp to play the playlist and OBS Studio to capture the audio and send the stream.
- Playlist rights: Confirm you have permission to broadcast every track or station in the playlist. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt a broadcast.
1. Load and test the playlist in Winamp
Load or create your playlist in Winamp, then play it and confirm that you can hear it through the intended Windows audio output. Winamp playlists can contain tracks, internet radio stations, and other media resources, and preserve the order you set. Winamp’s official help describes playlist loading through the Playlist Editor or Media Library; specific controls may differ across versions. Its documented versions recommend DirectSound Output for normal playback.
Make a note of the output device Winamp uses. You may need to select that device in OBS if application capture does not work.
2. Capture Winamp audio in OBS
In OBS, add an audio source to your scene. For direct, per-application capture, use Application Audio Capture and select Winamp. OBS documents this feature as available starting with OBS Studio 28 on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. See the OBS Application Audio Capture guide.

Turn off global Desktop Audio in Settings → Audio when using application audio capture, so the same playback is not captured a second time. Watch the OBS audio mixer while Winamp plays: its meter should respond to the music.
Fallback: capture the output device
If Application Audio Capture is unavailable or does not capture Winamp’s audio path, add an Audio Output Capture source and select the Windows output device Winamp uses. This captures audio from that device, rather than isolating Winamp alone. Avoid capturing the same device both in the scene and globally in Settings → Audio; OBS warns that duplicate device capture can cause echo. See OBS’s audio sources guide.

3. Add a visual if your scene needs one
OBS can stream audio with a visual scene. If you do not want the broadcast to show a blank scene, add an appropriate source such as a still image or title. A visualizer is optional; the basic workflow does not require one.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s encoder settings.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials; if one is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS. See YouTube’s stream-key instructions.
For the platform’s setup details, see YouTube’s encoder setup guide. This workflow uses the connection details YouTube provides; it does not require advanced ingestion settings.

5. Preview the feed and go live
- Start streaming in OBS.
- Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm the audio is present and clean, and check the scene before starting the public broadcast. If you scheduled the stream, click Go live in the control room when ready.
- Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of the event and checking the stream continuously.
6. End the broadcast deliberately
When finished, stop streaming in OBS and end the broadcast in YouTube’s Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current guidance if archiving is important to you, since platform behavior can change.
Music rights and YouTube interruptions
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content, including copyrighted material. If it detects a match, it may replace the live feed with a placeholder; if the material continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Public, unlisted, and private visibility settings do not grant music rights. If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and make sure your permissions cover livestreaming.

Troubleshooting
OBS’s audio meter is silent
- Check that Winamp is playing and that sound reaches the Windows output device.
- Confirm that Application Audio Capture is set to Winamp, or that Audio Output Capture is set to the device Winamp uses.
- If application capture is selected but does not work with the audio path, try capturing the output device instead.
The music echoes or sounds doubled
Use one capture route. Do not capture Winamp through both Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio. If you use Audio Output Capture in the scene, make sure the same device is not also active globally in OBS’s audio settings.
Application Audio Capture does not work
OBS notes that some applications’ audio output may be incompatible with Application Audio Capture. Switch to Audio Output Capture for the device Winamp uses, then check that you have not enabled a duplicate route.

YouTube does not offer live streaming
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. If this is your first livestream, activation may take up to 24 hours.
The broadcast is interrupted while music plays
Check YouTube’s copyright notice and resolve the rights issue. If you have a licence, confirm with the rights owner whether channel allowlisting through Content ID is required; a licence alone does not guarantee the stream will avoid an automated interruption.
The stream key may be exposed
Reset the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace it in OBS before streaming again.
