How to Run an Indian Classical Music Radio Stream on YouTube from a Playlist

Use OBS to loop authorized local recordings into a YouTube Live stream. Here’s how to build the playlist, connect the encoder, and avoid rights and setup issues.

You can run a radio-style YouTube Live stream from a playlist of local audio or video files using OBS Studio: add the files as a looping source, connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast with your stream key, check the preview and audio, then start streaming. First, make sure you have the rights to broadcast every recording. A playlist hosted on YouTube is different: the workflow documented here is for local files, and access to listen to a YouTube playlist does not grant permission to rebroadcast it.

Before you set up OBS, clear the music rights

Use original recordings, recordings that are genuinely in the public domain after checking the relevant rights, or recordings for which you have permission broad enough to cover your planned live stream, territories, and any archive. A label such as “free” in a track description does not prevent a Content ID match. YouTube’s Tips to find safe music explains the public-domain or permission basis for using music safely.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Treat that as a responsibility to verify the rights for each recording, not just the playlist as a whole.

If you have a licence

Check that it covers live online broadcast, the territories where viewers may watch, and whether the stream will remain available as an archive. If the music is licensed but enrolled in Content ID, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its allowlist; otherwise YouTube may still match the stream.

If you mean a playlist already on YouTube

The documented OBS method below plays local media files. The official guidance cited here does not establish a way to rebroadcast items from a hosted YouTube playlist, or grant permission to do so. Do not download or retransmit tracks unless you have the necessary rights.

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; its help page also sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16. Check your account in YouTube Studio, because eligibility and restrictions are channel-specific. See Get started with live streaming for YouTube’s current requirements and available streaming methods.

Choose how OBS will play the files

Source Best for Repeat setting Requirement
Media Source One local recording Enable Loop No VLC prerequisite is stated in OBS’s documentation for Media Source.
VLC Video source A sequence of multiple local audio or video files Enable Loop Playlist VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS.

These playback options are documented in OBS Project’s Media Sources guide. Use Media Source for a single file; use VLC Video when you need a playlist that advances through several files.

Build and test the playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio. If you plan to use VLC Video, install VLC as well; OBS requires it for that source to appear.
  2. Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the radio stream so the playback source and any visual elements you choose are grouped together.
  3. Add the files. For one recording, add a Media Source and select the local file. For multiple recordings, add a VLC Video source and add the authorized local files to its playlist.
  4. Set repeat behavior. In the source properties, turn on Loop for a single Media Source, or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video source. Confirm the list order and that each file is readable before relying on it for a long broadcast.
  5. Check sound before going live. Start playback in OBS and listen to the audio output. Confirm that the intended file plays, that the next playlist item follows, and that the volume is audible without distortion.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or manage the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to run. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a stream URL and stream key for sending the signal from software such as OBS.
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and stream URL supplied for that broadcast if OBS asks for them. Labels can vary with the OBS version and connection method.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before making the broadcast public. Confirm that the picture or chosen visual is present and that the correct audio is reaching YouTube.
  5. Check the connection before the public start. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Use the YouTube live streaming tips and Manage live stream settings for encoder preparation and stream details.
  6. Go live from the control room. Once the preview, audio, and connection look right, start the broadcast in YouTube Studio if the chosen stream workflow requires that confirmation.

Monitor the broadcast for rights matches

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause the stream to be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated. If your licensed recording is being matched, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See Copyright issues with live streams for YouTube’s guidance on matches and interruptions.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • VLC Video is missing from OBS: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
  • The playlist stops after one pass: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled for VLC Video. For a single-file Media Source, enable Loop instead.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder signal: Check that the stream URL and key in OBS match the broadcast selected in YouTube Studio, and make sure OBS is actually streaming.
  • The preview appears but there is no music: Verify that the intended local file is selected and playing, then check the source and OBS audio levels while listening to the output.
  • The broadcast is interrupted or replaced: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright or Content ID notice. Confirm that your permission covers the use and, where applicable, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel.
  • The connection is unstable: Confirm that your available upload bandwidth can sustain the chosen bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
