A home computer can send prerecorded video to YouTube around the clock using encoder software such as OBS. But “can run” does not mean “will never stop”: your computer, power, internet connection and encoder must keep working, and YouTube may not save a complete archive of a broadcast longer than 12 hours.
What has to keep working?
Your computer acts as the encoder host: it plays the prerecorded video and sends the live feed to YouTube. You enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube into the encoder. A standalone hardware encoder is another option, but a home-PC setup uses software such as OBS.
For a continuous broadcast, the practical dependencies include the computer and encoder staying stable, the home connection remaining available, and power continuing uninterrupted. Updates, overheating or encoder errors can also interrupt a long-running setup. These are operational risks, not a published estimate of how often a home stream will fail.
There is no universal PC specification that guarantees 24/7 performance. OBS says compatible system requirements do not guarantee that a computer can stream or record a particular workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice and scene complexity all matter; test the actual configuration on the machine you plan to use. OBS system requirements

Set up a home-computer stream
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. Enable live streaming for the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder setup and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS, add the prerecorded video as a media source or arrange the sources needed for your broadcast, then enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the streaming settings. Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate to values both the computer and the available upload connection can sustain.
- Check upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends keeping 20% headroom above the bitrate. A connection disruption can break the stream. Measure upload performance and test under the conditions in which you intend to stream. - Run a real test before relying on it. Start with a modest setting, check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm the video and audio behave as intended. YouTube advises monitoring quality and testing encoder failover; if you plan to make a local recording, confirm that the recording is actually being written and growing.
- Plan how you will respond to interruptions. Keep an eye on the stream and decide who will notice and restart it if the computer, encoder or connection fails. A backup power unit may help with some brief power interruptions, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or guarantee a particular runtime.
Will YouTube keep the complete 24/7 archive?
Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive to preserve a complete 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, arrange local recording and a separate publishing or archive workflow. You could also end and restart broadcasts on a schedule, while retaining local copies as needed. Check rights and YouTube rules before looping videos
Using prerecorded material does not itself give you the right to broadcast it. YouTube’s terms require the rights needed to distribute live content through Google services, including relevant music rights, and livestreams must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check the rights for every video and audio track you plan to use. YouTube Terms of Service
