You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio-style channel from a refurbished PC by sending a continuous encoder stream to YouTube, then planning for the PC, internet connection, power, recordings and music rights to hold up over time. YouTube does not publish a minimum PC specification for this job, so choose equipment for the settings you intend to use and validate it with a sustained test before relying on it.
What you need before going live
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube supports live streams sent from an encoder. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- An encoder configured with the YouTube server URL and a stream key.
- A refurbished desktop PC, stable upload connection and suitable power arrangement that can sustain your chosen output.
- Music and visual material cleared for the intended live broadcast and any replay or recording.
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube advises configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event, starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled start, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video. Choose a refurbished PC for the workload
YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not specify a minimum processor, RAM amount, or approved refurbished-PC model. A machine that can run Windows or another operating system is not automatically capable of encoding your intended video continuously. Compare the PC’s supported hardware-encoding options, processor and memory under the selected workload, drive health, cooling, Ethernet availability, physical condition, seller warranty and return terms.
Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate based on the visual format and what the actual machine can sustain. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 options for RTMP/RTMPS streams, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and provides bitrate guidance by resolution, frame rate and codec. Examples of YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Run the PC at the exact settings you plan to use for a sustained period. Watch for dropped frames, encoder overload, rising temperatures, audio gaps and stream-health warnings. These are practical checks, not a YouTube certification standard.
Configure and test the encoder
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live event and locate its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Select the codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate you tested. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends; do not exceed a four-second keyframe interval.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in public screenshots or expose it in a shared configuration file. Regenerate it if it is disclosed.
- Start the encoder early. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, then confirm that video and audio are behaving as intended before the scheduled start.
- Keep monitoring during the test. Check for dropped frames, encoder warnings, overheating, audio failure and network interruptions at the selected settings.
Provide enough upload bandwidth and reliable power
YouTube recommends having 20% more upload capacity than the total stream bitrate and warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. Test upload speed on the actual internet connection, including at times when the household or workplace network is busy. An advertised download speed does not establish how much upload capacity is available. Prefer a reliable wired connection where practical; an Ethernet cable cannot compensate for inadequate ISP upload capacity. YouTube Help: live streaming tips.

If short power interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS for the PC and router. Compare its capacity with the combined equipment load, the runtime you need, outlet requirements, battery condition and replacement cost. Actual runtime depends on load and battery health; there is no universal UPS size that guarantees continuity.
Plan recordings, restarts and monitoring
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 event to create a complete YouTube replay. If an archive matters, record locally, check that the recording file is growing during the broadcast, and plan storage capacity, retention and segmentation. File size depends on bitrate and duration. Before enabling local recording, make sure the destination drive has enough space and can sustain writes; check its health and the resulting recording rather than assuming the file is usable.
The official YouTube pages do not establish guaranteed maximum uptime or a guaranteed unattended restart system for a 24/7 channel. Make a recovery plan and test it. Decide who or what will detect a stopped encoder, failed audio, network outage, full recording disk or power interruption, and how the stream will be restored.

Clear music and visual rights before streaming
Use only music and visuals for which you have the necessary rights for the planned live stream and any archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If it identifies protected content, it may replace the video with a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube Help: live stream restrictions.
YouTube’s live-streaming terms require the provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including music rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants, and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. For an India-based channel, the licensing path depends on the repertoire, rights holders, territory and whether the program includes live performance, recordings or archived playback. Obtain permissions that cover the intended uses and consult a qualified Indian rights professional where needed; no single license can be assumed sufficient for every radio format. Refurbished-PC setup checklist
- Confirm the PC can sustain the selected encoding workload, and inspect cooling, storage health and Ethernet availability.
- Check the seller’s warranty, return terms and the machine’s physical condition.
- Test upload bandwidth on the connection and at likely busy times; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total bitrate.
- Test the stream at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate; monitor encoder, audio and YouTube stream health.
- Protect the stream key and keep a recovery procedure available to the operator.
- If recording locally, confirm that storage has capacity and that the recording grows and plays correctly.
- Clear rights for music and visuals in both live playback and any planned archive.
