How to Shuffle Game Replays in OBS Without Restarting Your YouTube Stream

Add game replay files to OBS’s VLC Video source, enable Shuffle Playlist, and use scene transitions to put them on air without stopping your YouTube broadcast.

To shuffle multiple game replays in OBS, add them to a VLC Video source and enable Shuffle Playlist in that source’s Properties. You can change to the scene containing the source with a normal OBS scene transition; you do not need to stop the YouTube broadcast just to switch scenes. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Set up a shuffled replay playlist

  1. Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check this dependency first.
  2. Add the source to your replay scene. In OBS, select the scene where the replays should appear. In the Sources panel, click the add (+) button and choose VLC Video.
  3. Add your replay files. Open the source’s Properties and add the game replay files to its playlist. Confirm that the files are accessible from the computer running OBS.
  4. Turn on shuffle. Check Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents this option as off by default; it randomizes playback rather than following the file-list order.
  5. Choose whether to repeat the list. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should start over after the playlist runs out. OBS documents this option as on by default, but check the actual setting in your source.
  6. Set visibility behavior. Review Visibility Behaviour. Its setting controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible; with that behavior, hiding the source or leaving its scene can reset playback when it becomes visible again.
  7. Check the live mix. Keep the VLC source visible in the on-air scene, or transition to the scene that contains it. Verify that replay video and audio are present and that game audio is routed as intended. Test the actual files before relying on them live.

Choose the right OBS source

Use VLC Video when you need a playlist of several files or want to shuffle them. The ordinary Media Source is for an individual media file; its Restart playback when source becomes active option controls whether that file restarts when it becomes visible. That setting does not shuffle a collection.

Switch scenes without ending the broadcast

A scene transition changes which OBS scene is being sent to the live output; it is not the same action as stopping the stream. Keep the broadcast active and use the usual scene transition to put the replay scene on air. In Studio Mode, you can prepare or edit a scene on the preview side while viewers continue seeing the current live scene, then transition when ready. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

If you switch away from the replay scene, what happens to playback depends on the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour. Keep the source visible or choose a behavior suited to your intended playback. OBS’s documentation does not establish that shuffle produces a new order after every file or application restart, nor does it promise gapless transitions between files.

Troubleshoot a black, frozen, or unexpectedly restarted replay

  • VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The replay starts over after a scene change: Check Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops playback while hidden and restarts it when visible. Keep the source active or select a behavior that does not stop it when hidden.
  • The wrong file plays, or the order is not shuffled: Open the VLC Video source’s Properties, confirm the intended files are in its playlist, and check Shuffle Playlist. Do not confuse it with Media Source’s restart setting.
  • The source is black or frozen while the stream remains live: Confirm that the VLC source is in the active scene and visible, check its file paths and the files themselves, and test the specific replay files. OBS’s documentation does not certify every file format or decoder outcome.
  • The whole broadcast disconnects: Investigate the stream connection separately from the playlist. OBS identifies network instability between the computer and remote ingest server as a cause of dropped frames or intermittent disconnections; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home for the cloud stream to continue.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
