A YouTube Live gaming stream is not documented as automatically ending at 12 hours. YouTube does warn that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. First establish whether the live broadcast ended, viewers lost rewind, or the replay failed to appear—each points to a different check.
First identify what “stopped” means
| What you saw | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The live player said the broadcast ended or viewers could no longer watch live. | The live delivery ended. The 12-hour archive and DVR caveats do not, by themselves, explain an active stream ending. | Encoder output and logs, CPU load, outbound internet, Live Control Room status, and YouTube Studio notices. |
| Viewers could no longer pause or rewind, but the live broadcast continued. | This may be a DVR limitation. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. | Confirm whether the stream was still live; loss of rewind is not proof that transmission ended. |
| The broadcast ended, but no replay appeared afterward. | This may be an archive-capture limitation. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Check for a local recording and confirm whether it is complete. |
YouTube’s Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams help pages describe archive capture and DVR as distinct behaviors. Neither states that YouTube automatically terminates an active stream at the 12-hour mark.
If the live broadcast actually ended
Inspect the encoder and source
- Use the latest version of your encoder software, as YouTube recommends.
- Check the encoder preview and output for video or audio problems, errors, or interruptions. Review its logs around the time the broadcast ended.
- Look at CPU load and whether the gaming system or encoder was overloaded. A local recording can also help reveal audio or video faults.
These checks can help locate a source or encoding problem, but they do not establish the cause of a particular stop. YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream guidance covers encoder checks and connection testing.
Test outbound connectivity
If the encoder appears healthy, test the strength and stability of the outbound internet connection from the streaming setup. If the test points to a connection issue, YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider. Do not assume new networking equipment is needed without a diagnosed connection problem.

Review YouTube status and policy notices
Open Live Control Room and YouTube Studio and look for status messages, copyright notices, or Community Guidelines strikes. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content; a match that remains in the stream may lead to temporary interruption or termination. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a live stream. See Copyright issues with live streams.
If only rewind stopped working
Check whether viewers could still watch the live broadcast after rewind became unavailable. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That is a viewer-control limitation, not evidence that the encoder stopped sending video or that the stream ended.

If the replay is missing after the stream
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is a caveat about recording the broadcast on YouTube, not a stated live-transmission cutoff. See Archive live streams.
Check your local recording
- During encoder setup, enable a local archive or recording if your software supports it.
- While live, verify that the recording file exists and its size continues to grow. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking that the local archive file is growing.
- After the session, open the file and check that it plays through the expected duration, including the ending.
A local copy is a backup; it does not force YouTube to create an archive. An external SSD is one optional place to store recordings, but YouTube does not require or endorse a particular drive, and the storage needed depends on recording settings and session length.

Before the next long gaming rerun
- Decide whether you need a local recording backup, particularly if the stream may exceed 12 hours.
- Preview the broadcast in Live Control Room and monitor stream quality while it is live, following YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Keep an eye on encoder errors, CPU load, and the local recording file during the session.
- After any unexpected stop, note the time and compare encoder logs, connection results, Live Control Room status, and Studio notices. A 12-hour symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded gaming footage looping as a YouTube live stream without leaving a PC on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
