You can run a prerecorded playlist as a continuous YouTube live stream from Windows with FFmpeg: prepare compatible video files, create a playlist text file, then send its output to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The PC, network connection, and FFmpeg process must stay running, and a single command is not a complete recovery plan. This guide covers setup, encoding choices, testing, and the limits to plan around.
Before you start: enable YouTube Live and protect your stream key
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you plan to go live. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream using an encoder.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the exact server and key arrangement shown there in your FFmpeg destination.
- Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Use the RTMPS URL when the selected YouTube stream and your FFmpeg build support it. YouTube explains the encryption at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Prepare a Windows playlist FFmpeg can read
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file in which each entry names a media file. It can join files without re-encoding when their streams are compatible: the codecs, stream layout, and time bases must match. Differences in duration information or timestamps can cause gaps or artifacts at clip boundaries, even when the files appear similar.

Create a UTF-8 text file such as C:streamsplaylist.txt, with files in the desired playback order:

Paths containing apostrophes or unusual characters need appropriate escaping; do not assume every filename will work unchanged. When the clips are not compatible
Do not rely on the demuxer to make different codecs, frame rates, audio layouts, or timing behave as one seamless program. You can normalize the clips ahead of time, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter to join and re-encode them. The filter provides more control over mismatched inputs but uses encoding resources and requires a filter graph suited to the media. FFmpeg distinguishes these approaches in its FAQ.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended H.264 bitrate ranges include:

These are encoder input recommendations, not a guarantee of the quality viewers will receive. Choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support, and leave at least 20% upload headroom, as YouTube advises in its streaming tips. A test should reflect the streaming PC’s sustained outbound capacity, not just a headline download-speed result. If you use a backup encoder, YouTube’s guidance also calls for capacity covering the primary and backup bitrates plus 20%.
For the GOP setting in the example command below, -g 60 means 60 frames per keyframe interval. It corresponds to two seconds only if the output frame rate is 30 fps. Set the frame rate deliberately and confirm the encoder emits it; do not copy the GOP value in isolation. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current recommendations.

Start FFmpeg and send the playlist to YouTube
Install an FFmpeg build from a source you trust, then check that it includes the chosen video encoder, RTMPS output support, and FLV muxing. The following is an illustrative starting pattern for a compatible H.264/AAC playlist, not a tested Windows command or a universal preset:

In some setups YouTube displays a server URL and a separate key; combine them only as directed by the displayed configuration. The quoted destination above is a pattern, not a literal YouTube address.

The example’s 4500 kbps target is not a recommendation for every resolution or upload connection. Tune resolution, frame rate, video and audio bitrate, and GOP to the YouTube settings and capacity available to the PC. Re-encoding gives you control over output parameters but consumes CPU or supported hardware-encoder resources. Stream-copying with -c copy avoids that encoding load, but only makes sense if every playlist file is compatible and its existing streams already suit YouTube’s accepted input settings.
Test before making the stream public
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Studio and run the command from the Windows machine that will host the broadcast.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, motion, and errors. Confirm that the intended viewer page is accessible with the chosen privacy setting.
- Check stream health and confirm audio is present at clip boundaries. A playlist that runs continuously at the input level may still have visible or audible discontinuities between files.
- Monitor the FFmpeg process and the network while the test runs. If you are recording locally or checking an archive, verify that the file is growing and that the required storage is available.
- Only move to a public broadcast after the test confirms that the playlist, encoder settings, destination, and viewer experience are correct.

Keep the stream running and plan for recovery
A Windows-hosted 24/7 stream depends on the PC, power, network path, and FFmpeg process staying healthy. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Keep the machine from sleeping, use a stable wired connection where practical, monitor process and stream health, and arrange a way to notice and recover from a stopped process or dropped connection. A single FFmpeg command does not supervise itself or guarantee that YouTube will resume the broadcast after a failure.
- Track outbound network stability, PC temperature and power, disk space, and whether FFmpeg is still running.
- Decide who or what will detect a failure and restart the encoder, and test that recovery procedure before relying on it.
- An uninterruptible power supply for the PC and router may help with brief power interruptions; it does not provide internet service or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
- Plan archive needs separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer broadcast will be saved as one complete archive. If a complete archive matters, use shorter sessions or a separate recording workflow you have verified. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.
- Use only video and audio you have the rights to broadcast. Repeating a file does not grant permission to rebroadcast it, and a live-stream setup does not remove YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules.
