You can loop prerecorded gaming footage into a YouTube livestream with FFmpeg by creating a compatible playlist, sending it to YouTube’s encoder ingest URL with a private stream key, and starting the broadcast in Live Control Room. The core setup is free, but it is not automatically a seamless or self-recovering 24/7 service: test the files, monitor the preview, and plan for process, network, and YouTube interruptions.
Before you start: check YouTube livestream eligibility
YouTube’s stated guidance says your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. You can send gameplay through an encoder such as FFmpeg. Check the current requirements and channel status in YouTube’s livestreaming help before building the setup.
- A YouTube account and an eligible channel.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can access your source files and maintain an internet connection for the duration of the stream.
- Local gaming recordings that you have the right to broadcast, including any game audio, music, overlays, and other included material.
- A reliable upload connection with capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; the applicable bitrate recommendations can vary with output settings, so check its current encoder settings.
Choose how to assemble the gaming playlist
There are two different jobs: joining files and repeating the finished input. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely; it does not guarantee smooth transitions, identical levels, or automatic recovery if FFmpeg or the network fails. The option belongs before the corresponding -i. See the FFmpeg concat FAQ for the distinction between joining files with the concat demuxer and using the concat filter.

Neither concat approach promises a gapless result for every collection of recordings. If clips differ in resolution, frame rate, codecs, audio layout, or timestamps, test a short private or unlisted run first and adjust the workflow rather than assuming a single command fits all media.

Create the stream in YouTube Studio and protect the key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Set its title, visibility, and other stream details in Studio.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Use the ingest endpoint YouTube provides for this stream; YouTube recommends RTMPS in its current encoder guidance.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories, and article examples. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.
The exact Studio labels and available controls can change. Use the URL and key displayed for your own stream rather than copying an endpoint or key from someone else.
Build a local playlist and loop it with FFmpeg

This is a command shape, not a universal ready-to-run command: replace the bracketed portion with output options appropriate to your file and YouTube’s current settings, and use the actual ingest URL and key privately. FFmpeg options are position-sensitive; put -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i. Consult FFmpeg’s documentation for the installed version and its supported options.

Several compatible files with the concat demuxer
Create a UTF-8 text file named, for example, playlist.txt, with one entry per file:

This is suitable only when the files can be concatenated in the chosen mode. Stream-copying avoids re-encoding when parameters permit, but mismatches may cause errors or playback problems at file boundaries. Test the complete playlist and confirm picture and sound continue correctly before making the broadcast public.

When the files need normalization
Use the concat filter when you need filter-based processing or the files are not suitable for demuxer-based concatenation. The filter workflow requires decoding, applying the filter, and encoding the result; it uses more processing resources than a compatible stream-copy path. The filter graph and output settings depend on the input files, so there is no single safe command for all gaming playlists. Check FFmpeg’s concat documentation, normalize the media as needed, and test the encoded output before connecting it to a public stream.

- Choose an output resolution, frame rate, video/audio codecs, and bitrate supported by your media, encoder setup, and YouTube’s current settings page. Do not paste settings from an old guide without checking them against the current YouTube recommendations.
- Set the keyframe interval to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Recommendations can change, so confirm the current YouTube encoder guidance.
- Make sure available upload speed exceeds the total stream bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends 20% extra upload capacity. If the connection is unreliable, a wired computer-to-router connection is one optional way to reduce local wireless variability, not a livestream requirement.
- Start FFmpeg with the correct output options and the private YouTube ingest URL and stream key. Watch its output for connection or encoding errors.
- Wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture, audio, and playback before selecting Go live or otherwise making the scheduled stream public.
- Keep watching the encoder and YouTube status while the rerun is live. The local process and network are part of this DIY setup; a loop option does not restart FFmpeg after a crash or restore an interrupted connection by itself.
Plan for archives and long-running streams
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance is not proof that every longer stream is forcibly stopped at exactly 12 hours, nor does it guarantee an archive for every longer broadcast. For a continuous rerun, decide how you will end or restart encoder sessions and manage recordings, and check current Live Control Room behavior before relying on an archive.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for gaming reruns
Only stream recordings and audio you are permitted to broadcast. A game’s soundtrack, licensed music, cutscenes, and third-party overlays may have rights separate from your gameplay recording. A livestream that is technically connected can still receive a copyright claim or other enforcement; check the applicable rights and YouTube policies before publishing. Repeating footage does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies if monetization is a goal.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg rerun problems
