Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose OBS if you can keep a computer, internet connection, and streaming process running and can respond when something fails. Choose cloud playout if you want a prerecorded radio stream to continue while your computer is off. OBS sends the stream directly from your computer to YouTube; a cloud service plays uploaded videos from provider-managed infrastructure. Neither approach should be described as guaranteed uninterrupted without service-level evidence.
What a 24/7 YouTube radio stream needs
YouTube’s encoder workflow sends video as well as audio. For an audio-led radio station, pair your music or other audio with a static branded image or a looped visual. Then send that combined signal to YouTube using an encoder such as OBS or a cloud playout service.
Before either setup, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and provide your encoder with the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and the 24/7 radio setup guide.
OBS versus cloud playout
| Decision | OBS on your computer | Cloud playout |
|---|---|---|
| Where playback and encoding run | On your local computer; OBS connects directly to YouTube. | On provider-managed infrastructure. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for prerecorded video; Upstream describes cloud playback and scheduled prerecorded streams. |
| Can your computer be off? | No, not in an OBS-only setup. The computer and OBS process must remain available. | Yes, for the cloud playback described by Upstream; YouTube’s Gyre listing says a dedicated PC is not needed. |
| What you manage | Your computer, internet connection, OBS scene and source, and recovery when the process or connection stops. | Your uploaded content, stream configuration, and the features and behavior of the selected provider. |
| Cost evidence | OBS is software. The cost of a dedicated computer, electricity, and internet has not been estimated here. | Upstream displayed a free plan with 24 streaming hours per month and an unlimited single stream at $30 per month when its pricing page was accessed on October 3, 2026. AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing depends on running inputs, outputs, add-ons, configuration, and region. |
| Reliability evidence | OBS documentation explains connection-related dropped frames, but no comparative uptime figures are established. | Provider descriptions use continuous-streaming language, but no independent uptime comparison is established. |
| Best-supported fit | An operator willing to maintain a local computer and troubleshoot interruptions. | A creator who wants uploaded, prerecorded material to play while their computer is off. |
YouTube’s verified encoder directory identifies options; it is not an independent reliability comparison. Upstream’s feature and price details come from its own pages: features and pricing. AWS Elemental MediaLive is a more configurable broadcast-grade processing service, rather than a simple upload-and-loop workflow.

Set up a basic OBS radio stream
- Prepare the channel. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and wait for activation if required. Create or select the broadcast, then copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings. Keep the key private.
- Build the audio-and-visual scene. In OBS, add your audio source and a static image or looped visual. Confirm that the audio is audible in OBS’s mixer and that the intended visual is present in the preview.
- Configure the stream connection. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. Use YouTube’s RTMPS option where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard streaming.
- Choose output settings for your signal and connection. YouTube’s current encoder settings support H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, with CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommendations for those video configurations, not universal targets for a static radio image. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start a private or unlisted test, check the video and audio in YouTube’s stream health tools, and observe it long enough to confirm the audio source and visual continue as intended. Use representative content and motion. For a mostly static image, dependable upload capacity and recovery matter more than selecting a higher resolution without a reason.
- Keep the local setup alive. Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep OBS running, and make sure the network connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Someone must be able to respond to local power, network, or process failures.
What changes if you choose cloud playout
Cloud playout shifts playback away from your personal computer: select a provider, upload or schedule prerecorded material, connect its output to YouTube using your stream details, and test the resulting broadcast. Confirm the current plan’s limits and functions directly with the provider. Vendor descriptions establish that services offer cloud playback, not that any particular channel will remain live without interruption.
For technically managed broadcast workflows, AWS MediaLive offers configurable cloud processing, but the bill depends on the actual inputs, outputs, add-ons, configuration, and region. It is not possible to infer a meaningful total cost without those choices.

Technical alternatives and YouTube limits
RTMPS is the default encoder path
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Follow the protocol and connection details shown for your stream in YouTube Studio and in the encoder or service you use. For deeper integration, YouTube also documents HLS: muxed audio and video in M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and media playlists and segments sent over HTTPS. HLS is a more specialized implementation, not the simplest choice for a basic OBS setup.
A 24-hour broadcast is not a single automatically archived recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 stream exceeds that threshold, so do not assume the entire continuous broadcast will be preserved as one automatically archived video. Plan separately if you need recordings.

Content rights and channel policy still apply
Using a static image or looping visual does not grant rights to the music, video, or other material in the stream. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules before going live. Continuous playback alone does not establish that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content or other monetization requirements.
Troubleshooting a stream that stops or degrades
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the correct stream is selected, OBS is started, and the stream URL and key match. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Dropped frames or unstable output: OBS says rising dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate beyond the available upload capacity. Check the connection, lower bitrate or video settings as needed, and test again. YouTube’s OBS network troubleshooting guide explains dropped-frame causes.
- Stream ends when you leave: In an OBS-only setup, the local computer, power, network, and OBS process are dependencies. A cloud workflow avoids dependence on your home computer, but provider or YouTube interruptions remain possible.
- Audio plays but the image is missing: Inspect the OBS preview and confirm the image or visual source is enabled and visible. Verify the output on YouTube during a test rather than relying only on the local preview.
- The broadcast is interrupted by YouTube: Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and account notifications, then inspect the encoder connection and content rights. A process restart can address some local failures, but it cannot by itself resolve every YouTube-side interruption.
