To create a YouTube rerun channel for retro game playthroughs, build the channel around your own captured gameplay and give each episode a distinct reason to watch: commentary, a challenge, route advice, historical context, or a comparison of versions. A recurring series format is fine, but repeating long, silent gameplay is not a reliable path to monetization. YouTube reviews monetization at the channel level, and the game publisher’s rules determine whether you have commercial-use rights for its footage.
1. Set up a channel with a clear point of view

Create or select a Google account, then follow YouTube’s current channel creation flow. YouTube’s help page is the place to check for current interface steps.

Choose a name that signals retro playthroughs without implying that you are officially affiliated with a console maker or game publisher.

Use the About section to explain what viewers will get beyond gameplay. For example: complete runs with commentary, historically contextualized playthroughs, challenge runs, or explanations of routes and mechanics.

Pick a repeatable episode format, but make the substance of each installment distinct. Possible formats include a first-playthrough diary, one mechanic explored per episode, a challenge run with stated rules, or a comparison of an original release and a later port.
A channel can have a consistent opening, visual style, and schedule without making every upload interchangeable. YouTube’s channel monetization policies say reviewers may consider the channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, the share of watch time represented by videos, metadata, and About section.
2. Capture your own gameplay
Start by checking what video output your exact console provides and whether it can capture or send gameplay to your recording setup directly. Older systems vary: HDMI, composite, component, RGB, and other signal paths may require different adapters or conversion. A USB capture card can be useful when a console has no suitable built-in capture workflow, but compatibility depends on the console’s output, any adapters in the chain, and the capture device’s supported inputs. Verify all three before buying.

For recording: confirm that your capture path can save gameplay locally and that your workflow can add a microphone or separate commentary track.

For livestreaming: confirm that the capture device and software can send the console’s video and audio to your streaming setup, and decide how you will preserve an archive for editing.

For older video signals: account for adapters or converters and test the complete chain before a long recording. Each additional device can add cost and troubleshooting.

There is no single capture device that can be assumed to work with every retro console. YouTube’s guidance on video game and software content addresses monetization, not hardware compatibility; check the specifications for your console and any device you plan to use.
3. Make every rerun episode meaningfully yours
Record gameplay that you created yourself, then add an editorial or creative contribution that is apparent in the finished episode. You might narrate decisions as they happen, explain a route, set a challenge, discuss how a mechanic works, or place the game in its historical context. For instruction, connect the explanation to the action on screen rather than adding unrelated commentary.

YouTube warns that “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” Its guidance says monetization depends on the commercial-use rights the game publisher grants; commentary tied to the action and providing instructional or educational value may qualify. That is not a guarantee of approval. If your concept is a largely silent archival run, do not assume it will meet YouTube Partner Program requirements.
Reused-content review is also separate from copyright permission. An archive of someone else’s gameplay does not become original just because you credit the player. Prefer your own captured runs and make your contribution clear across the channel.
4. Check the game’s rules before recording or streaming
Owning a game or console does not automatically grant blanket permission to publish or monetize footage. Before starting a series, check the current official creator, gameplay, or streaming guidance for the specific publisher and title. Publisher rules differ, and some general guidelines defer to title-specific rules.

Nintendo games: Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines for Online Video & Image Sharing Platforms cover uploads and livestreams and list YouTube Partner Program monetization among permitted methods, subject to the guidelines. They encourage creative input and commentary. The guidelines apply to individual consumers; do not assume the same permission extends to a corporate channel. Nintendo excludes merely copied gameplay without creator or editorial input, subject to its stated console-feature exception.

SEGA games: SEGA’s Streaming Guidelines, last updated March 12, 2026, say the copyright in game footage belongs to SEGA or the relevant rights holders. The guidance permits platform monetization as an exception to a commercial-use restriction and says new elements such as commentary or narration are required in many cases. SEGA says title-specific product guidelines take priority if they conflict with the general guidance; its page describes individual users using products through legitimate means.
Game footage is not the only rights issue. In-game music, guest appearances, artwork, or other third-party material can have separate rights or licenses. A publisher’s general guidance does not settle every title, region, music license, or business structure, and its permission does not guarantee YouTube monetization approval. Recheck the current policy before you build a monetized series around a game.
5. Publish episodes so viewers understand their value

Use an accurate title that identifies the game, platform or version where relevant, and the episode’s particular angle.

Explain in the description what the episode contributes, such as a route explanation, challenge rules, or historical context.

Choose a thumbnail that represents the episode without suggesting publisher sponsorship or official status.

Keep the About page consistent with the channel’s actual format and production. Review the series as a whole, not only one upload at a time.

Nintendo says its guidelines cover both uploads and livestreams. SEGA says customer gameplay videos cannot be promoted as official SEGA videos. Avoid language or branding that could imply affiliation.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A stream can be interrupted or terminated if a match is detected, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Read YouTube’s current copyright guidance for live streams before going live.

Check the game’s current publisher guidance and consider whether its music or other material may create a separate rights issue.

Monitor YouTube warnings while live. Be prepared to mute, replace, or stop questionable audio or content if needed.

If a rights holder has licensed content for your stream, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

After the stream, check the archive for claims or restrictions before treating it as a cleared video for the channel.

7. Troubleshoot the common launch problems

| Capture device shows no picture | The console output, adapter, signal format, or capture-device input may not match. | Check the exact console output and every adapter in the chain against the capture device’s supported inputs. Test the full setup before recording a long session. |
