But YouTube does not guarantee that every stream will be saved or publicly visible. Streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and the creator controls whether an archive is public, private, or unlisted.
What a YouTube live gaming replay is
After a live stream ends, the channel may post or retain a replay. When available, viewers can watch it as a video on the channel, rather than as a live broadcast. YouTube describes replays as something a channel may post, so a completed gaming stream does not necessarily become a publicly viewable video. YouTube’s live-stream help explains that a channel may post highlights or a replay after a stream ends.
When YouTube saves a stream automatically
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams that are shorter than 12 hours, including streams made with an encoder, webcam, or mobile device. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Treat the 12-hour mark as a limit on what YouTube says may be archived—not as a promise that every shorter gaming stream will be saved. Why a replay might not be visible
The channel did not retain or post it
A replay appears on the channel only if the channel posts or retains it. Check the channel’s Videos and live-stream archive listings; if you cannot find it there, the creator may not have made a replay available.

The archive is private or unlisted
Creators can change an archive’s visibility in YouTube Studio. A public replay can be discovered by viewers; a private or unlisted one may not appear on the channel in the same way. YouTube’s stream settings include public, private, and unlisted visibility options. YouTube’s live-stream settings help explains those options.
The stream lasted longer than 12 hours
If the broadcast exceeded 12 hours, YouTube may not have captured it. The channel may have its own local recording, but that is separate from an archive saved by YouTube.

Replay versus DVR: the important difference
DVR controls whether viewers can pause and seek backward while a stream is still live. It does not determine whether a recording will be available afterward. YouTube says that when a creator disables DVR, viewers cannot seek back during the broadcast, but can still see the full stream recording once it is available. For very long live streams, DVR may be limited or unavailable, and viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began. YouTube’s DVR help describes these controls.
How to check for a missing replay
- Open the channel’s Videos page and look through its live-stream archive listing for the stream.
- If you own the channel, open YouTube Studio, go to Content, and select the Live tab. Check whether the archive exists and what its visibility is.
- Consider how long the stream ran. YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams shorter than 12 hours; streams over that duration may not be captured.
- Do not use DVR behavior as evidence that an archive is missing. DVR affects seeking during a live broadcast, not whether a later recording exists.
How creators can protect a gaming stream recording
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Its encoder tips suggest checking that the local archive file is continuing to grow during the broadcast. This is creator-side protection: viewers do not need a local recording to watch a replay that the channel has made available. YouTube’s live encoder tips include local-archive guidance.
