You can run chess VODs as a continuous YouTube Live feed by sending a looping playlist from an encoder such as OBS to a YouTube broadcast. The encoder—not a normal playlist upload—provides the live video. Before launching, clear the rights to every game recording and audio track, test the stream, and plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation.
What you need for a 24/7 chess stream
- Chess VOD files you own or have permission to stream on YouTube, including their audio and overlays.
- A computer and encoder that can play the files continuously; OBS is one software option named by Chess.com for chess streaming.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, a broadcast, and its stream URL and key.
- A stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the stream bitrate, plus a plan for monitoring and local backups.
A 24/7 feed is a supported technical pattern: YouTube’s API documentation uses a 24/7 feed as an example of a live broadcast. This is different from uploading VODs as ordinary YouTube videos or making a playlist for viewers to play themselves. The encoder sends the live feed to YouTube.
Prepare and clear the chess VODs
Check rights before building the playlist
You are responsible for having the rights needed to use the live and archived content on YouTube. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” YouTube’s livestream terms
For Chess.com material, its creator guidance says community members may stream or post their games subject to its community policy, but may not stream or post paid content such as lessons and videos. It also cautions against implying Chess.com sponsorship or endorsement. That guidance does not grant rights to another creator’s VODs, tournament broadcasts, music, or third-party overlays. Build a loop that can run unattended
Put the cleared files into a playlist in your encoder and enable repeat/loop playback. Check that the transition from the last file back to the first is intentional, that audio levels are consistent, and that no file is corrupt or unexpectedly silent. Keep the source files available locally; a live stream is not a substitute for your own archive.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and obtain the broadcast’s server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who has it can send a feed to your channel.
- Open the encoder, add the YouTube server URL and stream key, and select RTMPS where the encoder and YouTube setup offer it. YouTube’s official guide recommends RTMPS. YouTube encoder setup
- Add the VOD playlist as the encoder’s video source and configure continuous looping. Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended picture and audio rather than a desktop or camera source.
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast. Check YouTube’s preview, watch-page access, picture, audio, and stream health before making the stream public.
- Once the test is stable, start the public broadcast and monitor both YouTube stream health and whether your local backup recording continues to grow.
Choose resolution, codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrates are below; these are platform recommendations and may change. YouTube live encoder settings

For a chessboard, legibility and stability matter more than maximizing resolution. Choose a profile your actual upload connection and computer can sustain, then test it. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom over the total stream bitrate; this is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will remain stable. YouTube streaming tips
Plan for archives and stream continuity
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Therefore, do not rely on one week-long or indefinite broadcast to create a complete archive. Keep an independent local recording. If archives or rewind matter, consider ending and restarting broadcasts before the 12-hour boundary; that is a practical response to YouTube’s stated limits, not a guarantee that a particular restart pattern will preserve every archive. Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube shows no incoming video
Check that the broadcast is the one selected in the encoder, the server URL and stream key were copied correctly, and the encoder is actively sending. If you replaced or reset the stream key in YouTube, update it in the encoder. Never post the key publicly.
The stream buffers or loses health
The upload may not sustain the selected bitrate, or encoder load may be too high. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a sustainable profile; leave the recommended 20% upload headroom; and test again before returning to a public broadcast.

Video plays but audio is missing or wrong
Check the file’s audio track and the encoder’s selected audio source and meters. Test the complete playlist, including file transitions, so a silent or differently mixed clip does not go unnoticed.
YouTube interrupts the live feed over a match
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder and warning; unresolved content may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content can be interrupted unless the channel is on the rightsholder’s Content ID allowlist. Resolve rights and, where relevant, arrange allowlisting with the content owner before relaunching. YouTube live copyright guidance
The livestream is missing from the archive
A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a separate recording and, when an archive is important, use planned shorter broadcasts while recognizing that a restart is not a preservation guarantee.
