To stream an Icecast radio feed on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, use the station’s listener URL as the audio input, pair it with a still image for video, and send the result to YouTube’s ingest URL using your stream key. In YouTube Studio, start the encoder feed and check its preview before going live. The example below is a template, not a tested command; replace its placeholders with your station’s playback URL and the ingest details shown in your Live Control Room.

What you need before starting

  • An Icecast listener/playback URL for the station’s mount point. The station operator or its documentation must provide the correct URL and any access requirements.
  • A still-image file such as station-artwork.jpg. This example uses the image as the video layer while the Icecast feed supplies audio; it is one practical setup, not a universal YouTube requirement.
  • FFmpeg installed with the protocols and encoders needed by the command. FFmpeg’s available protocol support depends on how the installed build was compiled.
  • A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room, plus stable upload capacity for the chosen video bitrate.

Get the right Icecast and YouTube URLs

Use the Icecast listener URL as input

Use the URL listeners play, including the correct mount point. Do not use the station’s source-client publishing address: that address is for sending audio to Icecast, not reading the feed for this relay. FFmpeg documents its icecast:// protocol for streaming to Icecast servers; for this workflow, the Icecast playback URL is an input. It may use HTTP or HTTPS and may require authentication, headers, or a particular user-agent. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Copy the YouTube ingest details

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or open the stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. YouTube describes the key as acting like a password and address for accepting an encoder feed. Treat it as a secret: do not put a real key in published copy, screenshots, shell history, public repositories, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Build the FFmpeg command

The command below loops a still image, reads audio from the Icecast listener URL, maps the image video and feed audio, encodes them, and sends an FLV output to YouTube. Replace the sample URL and key locally; never publish your real key.

export ICECAST_URL='https://radio.example.org/live.mp3'

  -stream_loop -1 -framerate 1 -i station-artwork.jpg

  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YT_INGEST"

This illustrative template uses H.264 video at 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP (a two-second keyframe interval), and AAC stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. The 2,500 kbps video bitrate is an editorial starting point for this static-image example, not YouTube’s recommendation. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. A lower bitrate can be appropriate for a simple image, but choose one your connection or server can sustain reliably, with upload headroom.

YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers, CBR, and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; for stereo it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain a given bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Check input and compatibility when adapting it

  • The sample assumes FFmpeg can read the Icecast URL directly and detect an audio stream. The mount could deliver MP3, AAC, Opus, or another format, and station-specific authentication or headers may be required.
  • If the source audio is already compatible, stream-copying may be possible, but its codec is unknown here. AAC re-encoding is the safer general template for YouTube compatibility.
  • If FFmpeg reports no audio stream, inspect the feed with FFmpeg or ffprobe, confirm the listener URL plays in a browser or audio player, and check that -map 1:a:0 matches the detected stream.
  • The RTMPS server URL, port, and key must match the values provided for the chosen YouTube stream key. The example URL is illustrative; use the exact current ingest details in Live Control Room.

Start and end the YouTube broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled stream or create one in Live Control Room, then copy its ingest URL and stream key into your local environment.
  2. Run the FFmpeg command. Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room; check the audio and image before selecting Go live.
  3. During the broadcast, monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. When the broadcast is finished, stop FFmpeg from sending content and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same for longer sessions.

Troubleshooting common failures

No preview or incoming feed

  • Check that the output URL and current key are correct, that FFmpeg is using the intended RTMPS/RTMP endpoint, and that outbound firewall rules allow the connection.
  • Confirm the command reaches -f flv output and that the installed FFmpeg build includes the required support. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.

Audio is missing

  • Verify that the URL is the listener mount, not the source-client address, and that it currently plays in an audio player.
  • Check FFmpeg’s input probe and audio mapping. Authentication, headers, user-agent requirements, or an unsupported source format can prevent audio from being read.

Buffering or disconnects

  • Reduce video bitrate or resolution until the upstream connection can sustain the output consistently, while leaving bandwidth headroom.
  • Check the local network or hosted server’s stability and watch YouTube’s stream health messages.

FFmpeg exits after an interruption

Running FFmpeg by itself does not guarantee recovery after every feed or network interruption. For unattended operation, a service manager or supervisor can restart a failed process; that is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement. Test recovery before relying on it for a long broadcast.

Planning a broadcast longer than 12 hours

YouTube’s cited workflow guidance specifies automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. For longer broadcasts, plan an intentional stop and restart and verify current YouTube behavior instead of assuming one uninterrupted archive.
