For a typical live gaming stream, leave FFmpeg’s timestamp handling at its defaults. Add -copyts only when the source’s existing timeline matters; pair it with -start_at_zero if you want to preserve relative timing while starting the output timeline at zero. Neither option enables YouTube replay or guarantees identical output timestamps.
“Replay” can mean rewinding during the live broadcast (YouTube DVR) or watching the saved archive afterward. Those are separate YouTube features; configure them in YouTube Studio and protect important recordings with a local backup.
Choose timestamp options for the timeline you need
FFmpeg normally sanitizes input timestamps as it processes media. Use the options below only when you have a specific timing issue or need to preserve a meaningful source timeline. FFmpeg notes that synchronization and muxer processing can still alter output timestamps, even with -copyts. See the FFmpeg documentation.
| Goal or symptom | Option to consider | What it does and when to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary live gaming feed | No timestamp override | Start with FFmpeg’s normal handling. Do not preserve unusual offsets unless they serve a purpose. |
| Retain the source timeline | -copyts |
Retains input timestamp values rather than sanitizing them. Use when the source timeline matters, then inspect the output because processing may still change timestamps. |
| Retain relative timing but begin at zero | -copyts -start_at_zero |
Shifts the copied timeline to start at zero. This does not promise byte-for-byte or frame-for-frame timestamp identity. |
| Variable-frame-rate video is stream-copied and timestamps are non-monotonic | -copytb 1 |
Selects the demuxer timebase. FFmpeg identifies this as a possible fix for this specific stream-copy case; test against the actual source rather than applying it to every live command. |
Where to put the flags
These are FFmpeg global options: place them in the command’s global option area, before the relevant input and output specifications, following the syntax for your installed FFmpeg version. For example, the timestamp-related portion of a command might be:

Set up YouTube ingest separately from timestamps
Timestamp flags do not determine whether YouTube accepts a stream, how it encodes the stream for viewers, or whether viewers can rewind. Match your output to YouTube’s current encoder guidance, which lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s applicable table rather than copying a single bitrate without its context: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. Choose the stream URL and key shown in the channel’s Live Control Room. See YouTube’s streaming setup guidance.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds where your encoder permits it, and do not exceed four seconds, in line with YouTube’s guidance.
- Bitrate and codec: Select the recommendation matching your input codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a supported, stable ingest signal.
- Key security: Keep the stream key out of public commands, screenshots, logs, and source control. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and update your encoder.
Decide whether “replay” means DVR or an archive
Let viewers rewind during the live stream
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume an ongoing broadcast. Turn it on in the stream’s settings in YouTube Studio; FFmpeg timestamp options do not enable it. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the stream began, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Turning DVR off removes seeking during the live broadcast, but does not by itself prevent a recording from being available afterward. Details: YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.

Keep a replay after the broadcast
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce a complete archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; do so whenever the recording matters. See YouTube Help: archive live streams.
Diagnose timestamp problems before going live
- Record the exact setup. Save the full FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the output of
ffmpeg -version, and the input format. Note whether each stream is encoded or copied. - Probe the source and output. Use
ffprobeto inspect stream start times and packet or frame PTS/DTS. Compare the values and look for missing timestamps, discontinuities, or timestamps that fail to increase monotonically. - Change one thing at a time. If preserving a meaningful source timeline is the goal, compare a run with
-copytsto the default behavior. If the copied output should start at zero, try-copyts -start_at_zero. For variable-frame-rate video being stream-copied with non-monotonic timestamps, test-copytb 1. - Check the result rather than assuming. Probe the output again and review packet or frame timing. Synchronization and muxing can affect timestamps, so the flags alone do not establish that the output timeline matches the source exactly.
- Run a representative private test. Before a public gaming session, test with representative gameplay motion and audio. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify that the local recording is growing and can be played back. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring before streaming: YouTube Help: live streaming tips.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely point to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Non-monotonic timestamps while stream-copying variable-frame-rate video | The copied video’s timebase and source timing | Test -copytb 1 and compare packet or frame PTS/DTS. It is a targeted option, not a universal fix. |
| Output starts at an unexpected offset | Whether input timestamps should be preserved and whether output should begin at zero | Use defaults if the source offset is not meaningful. If preserving relative timing, test -copyts -start_at_zero and inspect the output. |
| Viewers cannot rewind during the broadcast | YouTube DVR setting, not FFmpeg timestamps | Check DVR in YouTube Studio. Remember that very long streams may have limited or unavailable rewind. |
| No archive, or an incomplete archive, after a long stream | Stream duration and reliance on YouTube’s archive alone | Keep a local recording. YouTube warns streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured. |
| Stream fails to connect or YouTube reports poor stream health | Ingest URL/key, protocol, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and network stability | Confirm the current Live Control Room URL and key, compare encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance, then test again while monitoring Live Control Room. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a pre-recorded gaming video to run continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
