Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a bandwidth-conscious 24/7 stream, start with H.264 at 720p30, using CBR at 4 Mbps for relatively low-motion content. That is a practical compromise, not YouTube’s recommended target: YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 720p30. For better image detail, work toward 8 Mbps if your VPS has enough sustained outbound capacity and monthly transfer allowance. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom, so plan for at least about 5 Mbps of sustained capacity for a 4 Mbps stream, or about 10 Mbps for an 8 Mbps stream. Test the actual server-to-YouTube route before relying on it.
Choose a bitrate by codec, resolution, and frame rate
There is no single bitrate that is right for every Indian VPS. YouTube’s live ingest guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, while your VPS provider’s port speed, monthly transfer quota, throttling rules, and route to YouTube determine what you can sustain. These figures are for live-stream ingest, not uploading a prerecorded video.
| Ingest format | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Use the row for your actual ingest codec and output mode; recommendations for one codec are not interchangeable with another. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats for viewers. Its listed ingest codecs are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm your encoder and selected YouTube ingest mode support the codec you choose. The live ingest figures and settings are published in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
A practical starting point for a constrained VPS
For relatively low-motion content, try H.264 720p30 at 4 Mbps if capacity or quota is tight. It is above YouTube’s listed minimum, but below its recommended 8 Mbps target, so inspect the resulting image rather than assuming it will look good enough. If your VPS and network route can reliably sustain the higher rate and quota, move toward 8 Mbps for more image detail. More motion generally places greater demands on compression, so test with representative footage instead of a static scene.

Allow enough outbound bandwidth
YouTube says available upload bandwidth must exceed the total stream bitrate and recommends leaving 20% headroom. That makes about 5 Mbps a planning floor for a 4 Mbps stream, and about 10 Mbps for an 8 Mbps stream. These are not guarantees of stable delivery: network capacity may fluctuate, and the real VPS-to-ingest route matters. Allow extra margin if the route or capacity is variable. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Calculate against the entire outgoing stream, not video alone. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo; audio adds a small amount to the total bitrate. For planning, include that audio rate and any other encoder output overhead in your total.

Estimate monthly transfer for a continuous stream
A 24/7 stream runs for roughly 720 hours in a 30-day month. The following are decimal estimates calculated from the stream bitrate and runtime; they cover the encoded stream and exclude protocol overhead and differences in provider traffic accounting.
| Continuous stream bitrate | Approximate transfer per 30 days |
|---|---|
| 4 Mbps | 1.30 TB |
| 8 Mbps | 2.59 TB |
| 14 Mbps | 4.54 TB |
Keep quota margin above the estimate. Check whether your VPS provider counts outbound traffic, both directions, or traffic another way. A fast port does not imply a large monthly quota, and “unmetered” does not by itself establish whether fair-use terms or throttling apply.

Check the VPS plan and route before committing
An Indian server location does not guarantee a particular bitrate or YouTube route. Providers publish different plan limits: for example, VyomCloud’s plans specify plan-dependent traffic and port speeds, while OVHcloud notes that Asia-Pacific locations including Mumbai have monthly quotas and speed limits after quota is reached. These are examples of provider-specific terms, not a rule for every Indian VPS.
- Read the exact plan’s monthly transfer allowance and port speed.
- Find out what happens when you reach the quota, including whether speed is reduced or service is otherwise limited.
- Confirm how the provider accounts for traffic and whether fair-use conditions apply.
- Test the actual route from your server to YouTube’s ingest, rather than treating a speed test to another destination as proof of stable stream delivery.
Configure the encoder for YouTube live ingest
- Choose the ingest endpoint and protect the key. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the server URL and stream key for the broadcast. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL encryption. Do not publish or share the stream key.
- Set the video format. Select a supported ingest codec and the resolution and frame rate you intend to stream. Match the bitrate to that codec and mode using YouTube’s table above.
- Use CBR and a short keyframe interval. Set constant bitrate (CBR), progressive video, and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Set the audio track. Use AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Include audio in your total outgoing bandwidth calculation.
- Run a representative test. Use footage with the motion and sound your channel will actually stream. Check Live Control Room stream health while testing, and adjust bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the route cannot sustain the selected output.
Troubleshoot unstable or poor-quality streams
- Stream health reports connection or bitrate problems: the route may not sustain the total output. Check actual outbound capacity, leave more than the 20% recommended headroom if the connection fluctuates, and test a lower bitrate or resolution.
- The picture looks blocky or loses detail: bitrate may be too low for the chosen resolution, frame rate, or motion. Test a higher rate within your bandwidth and quota limits, or reduce resolution or frame rate and inspect the result.
- The VPS works initially, then slows or stops later: check the plan’s transfer quota, accounting policy, and after-quota speed rules. A high port speed does not remove monthly transfer limits.
- The stream does not connect: verify the selected server URL, stream key, ingest codec, and encoder settings. If supported, use the RTMPS endpoint and confirm the key has not been changed or exposed.
- Audio is missing or contributes to instability: confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 audio and account for its bitrate alongside video when checking available capacity.
Account for YouTube rights and live-stream rules
A stable bitrate does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the content. Before looping a video, make sure you have the necessary rights for its video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current live encoder guidance and streaming tips. Do not assume that a video being available online makes it safe to rebroadcast or that a bitrate setting affects copyright or monetization decisions.
