OBS Studio is the best-supported Linux starting point for a YouTube gaming channel that needs both a live stream and saved gameplay replays. It handles the stream, local recording and replay buffer, but those are separate outputs: you must configure and test each. For a stream that should continue when your computer is off, a cloud option such as StreamNeo is a different approach from running OBS on your PC.
What “gaming replay channel” can mean
The phrase covers two related but distinct workflows:
- A continuous live channel: game footage is sent to YouTube as a live stream. Keeping OBS running on a Linux PC also means keeping that PC, its session, power and network available.
- A replay buffer: OBS temporarily retains recent gameplay so you can save a clip with a hotkey. This is local capture, not an automatic upload to YouTube.
OBS can support both workflows, but enabling a live stream does not by itself save clips, and enabling a replay buffer does not make those clips public. Configure the stream, recording and replay-buffer controls deliberately.
Why OBS Studio is the Linux choice
OBS brings together scenes and sources, YouTube streaming controls, local recording and a replay buffer. A scene describes the layout; sources can include the game, audio devices and, when needed, a capture card for console or second-PC video. Ordinary same-PC game capture does not require a capture card.

OBS also offers an automatic reconnect setting worth reviewing for a long-running stream. Reconnect is not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime: Linux session behavior, power, network stability, restart handling and YouTube stream health remain part of the setup. The available documentation does not establish one universal Linux boot-service recipe, so unattended startup needs distribution- and desktop-specific planning and testing.
Configure OBS for YouTube gaming
1. Build and test the game scene
- Create a scene for the game and add the appropriate game source. Add the intended microphone or other audio sources, then confirm their meters move as expected.
- Choose a base canvas for arranging the scene and a scaled output resolution for the stream. Match the output frame rate to your target and the system’s capacity; OBS warns that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps.
- Test with actual gameplay movement and audio, not just a static desktop. YouTube advises testing representative motion and sound before going live, then monitoring stream health during the event.
2. Match encoder settings to YouTube ingest
YouTube’s live-ingest guidance inspected on 2026-10-03 accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and recommends RTMPS. Use the bitrate for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually select; the figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations, not universal guarantees of quality or performance.

These are selected points from YouTube’s guidance; consult its full live encoder settings and bitrate table for the corresponding range and any updated recommendations. A bitrate target is not a substitute for adequate, stable upload capacity.
For SDR, YouTube specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Its guidance also recommends progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. AAC or MP3 audio is supported; recommended audio rates are 128 kbps for stereo and 384 kbps for 5.1. The recommended sample rate is 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, and 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.

HDR adds more requirements: YouTube specifies 10-bit and recommends HEVC for HDR; its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Do not select HDR unless the complete capture, encode and ingest path supports it.
3. Choose an encoder your Linux system actually supports
OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF and Intel Quick Sync on Linux, but availability depends on GPU generation, installed drivers and the OBS build. Check the encoder options available in your installed version rather than assuming a particular hardware encoder will appear or outperform software encoding. Older hardware generations can reduce performance impact at a quality cost.
OBS 31.0’s NVENC notes say “Ultra High Quality” tuning is aimed at live-action artifacts such as camera noise, is not recommended for gaming and significantly reduces throughput. Avoid it for this use case. There is no evidence-backed single encoder winner for every Linux gaming PC; weigh supported codec, YouTube’s matching bitrate guidance, visual quality at your upload rate, game-time CPU/GPU headroom and local editing compatibility.
Set up and save a replay buffer
- In OBS, open Settings and locate the replay-buffer controls. Enable the buffer and choose how much recent gameplay to retain, balancing clip length against available memory and system resources.
- Open Settings > Hotkeys and assign a convenient key to Save Replay Buffer. OBS documents separate start, stop and save-buffer hotkeys; assign and understand the controls you intend to use.
- Start the replay buffer before the gameplay you want to capture. When something worth keeping happens, press the save hotkey and verify that a clip was written to the configured recording location.
- Test the buffer while streaming if you plan to use both at once. Check game performance, audio and saved clip playback before relying on it for an important session.
Replay-buffer clips are local files. OBS does not automatically upload them to YouTube merely because the live stream is running.

Choose a resilient local recording format
For sustained local capture, interrupted-file recovery matters. OBS recommends MKV as the safe default for most use cases because it supports OBS encoder combinations and an unfinished file remains playable or recoverable after an interruption. Direct MP4 or MOV recording can be more convenient for editors and platforms, but a file may be unrecoverable if writing is interrupted before finalization. OBS describes fragmented MP4/MOV as a more resilient option with wider compatibility than MKV, subject to codec and editing-tool support.
A practical workflow is to record in MKV, then remux or convert if your editor or upload workflow requires another container. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, dated 2023-03-26, advises using the best available hardware encoder for high-quality local recording and ranks AV1 above HEVC above H.264 for its stated quality/file-size advice. It notes that real-time AV1 software encoding requires high-end CPUs and gives recent AMD RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40 and Intel Arc hardware as examples of AV1-capable classes; those examples are not a complete current compatibility list.
What an always-on Linux setup must survive
OBS is software, not a complete unattended-hosting system. Before treating a PC-based stream as 24/7, test the entire path: game or media source, audio, encoder load, upload connection, YouTube ingest, Linux session, power recovery and what happens after OBS or the machine restarts. Review OBS automatic reconnect and monitor stream health; neither removes the need to test failure and recovery behavior.
There is no universal boot or background-service procedure established for all Linux distributions and desktop environments. Exact autostart and restart instructions depend on the distro, session manager and hardware, so do not copy a generic service recipe without validating it for your machine.

Common problems and fixes
Stream disconnects or does not resume
Check the connection and YouTube stream health, then review OBS’s automatic reconnect setting. Test how the full setup behaves after a network interruption; reconnect settings do not prove that the stream will stay uninterrupted.
Game performance drops while streaming
Compare 30 fps with 60 fps, lower output demands if needed, and check whether a hardware encoder is available and functioning in the installed Linux driver and OBS stack. Hardware encoding is not automatically the best quality choice on every generation.

Video looks poor despite using the recommended bitrate
Confirm the selected bitrate matches the actual codec, resolution and frame rate, and check that the upload connection sustains it. Use representative gameplay motion for testing because static scenes can hide problems.
Replay hotkey saves no clip
Confirm the replay buffer is enabled and started, that the save hotkey is assigned, and that the output location is writable and has free space. Play back a test clip to verify both video and audio.
Recording is damaged after a crash or power loss
For future sessions, prefer MKV or a supported fragmented MP4/MOV workflow over direct MP4/MOV when interruption resilience matters. A direct MP4/MOV file that was not finalized may not be recoverable.
Storage and operating cost
Local replay and recording files consume space according to the chosen bitrate, resolution, frame rate and how long you retain them. The available evidence does not establish a universal drive capacity: estimate from your own recording settings and retention period. An external SSD is optional for a large local archive, not a requirement for same-PC capture.
