To run a 24/7 YouTube stream of speedrun world records, you need two things: an encoder feed that stays connected to a YouTube live event, and a rights-cleared playlist of runs that still qualify as records under their games’ current leaderboard rules. A public leaderboard entry is not permission to rebroadcast its video. You can run the feed yourself from a computer, or use a cloud service to keep an uploaded playlist streaming without leaving a computer on.
Plan the stream before you go live
Decide what the broadcast will cover and how you will keep its claims accurate. “World record” is not one title-wide status: it depends on the game, category, platform, timing method, and rules in force for that leaderboard.
- Choose a scope. For example, one game and category, or a clearly defined rotation across several games. Say which categories and platforms are included.
- Set a review schedule. Leaderboards can change. Decide how often you will recheck entries and remove or relabel a run when its record status changes.
- Set a rights standard. Include only footage you created or footage for which you have documented permission to rebroadcast. Check game, soundtrack, and other third-party rights as well as permission from the runner.
- Pick an operating model. A local encoder gives you control over the feed but depends on your computer and connection staying available. A cloud service can keep a playlist running without your home computer, but you still need to prepare authorized videos, configure the YouTube destination, and monitor the event.
Can you rebroadcast speedrun videos on YouTube?
Only when you have the necessary rights. Speedrun.com’s moderation rules prohibit copying or reuploading a player’s video without permission. A run appearing on a public leaderboard—or being accessible through an API—does not grant permission to copy its video, gameplay footage, music, or Speedrun.com material.
Ask each runner for explicit permission that covers the uses you intend. Keep a written record of the grant, including any limits. Permission to show the video does not necessarily clear music or other third-party content within it; check those rights separately. Speedrun.com’s Terms of Use also restrict unauthorized copying, archiving, scraping, and commercial use of its service and content. Do not build an automated collection or commercial use around leaderboard data without checking the current terms and securing appropriate authorization.

What to include in a permission request
- Permission to rebroadcast the specific run on your YouTube live channel, including whether you may keep it in a recurring loop.
- Whether you may edit, crop, add labels, or otherwise alter the footage.
- How the runner should be credited, or whether they request anonymity.
- Whether monetization is allowed, and any geographic, duration, or other limits.
- How the runner can ask you to remove the run, and what you will do if the record is beaten or the entry is withdrawn.
- Confirmation of any music or other material in the video that needs separate clearance.
A runner may request that a run or username not be listed. Speedrun.com rules also allow for an appropriate top time to be represented anonymously without a linked video. Respect those requests; do not assume that a leaderboard entry entitles you to display the runner’s name or footage.
YouTube can interrupt a stream over matched content
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may show a placeholder, warn the operator, temporarily interrupt the stream, or terminate it. A licensed video can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. If you have permission for third-party material, ask whether channel allowlisting is needed. The rights position can vary by game, publisher, territory, and soundtrack, so do not assume gameplay footage is automatically cleared for rebroadcast.

How to verify and document each “world record” run
Speedrun.com describes its leaderboards as community-owned and moderator-curated. Submission and verification requirements vary by game and board; video evidence is common, but it is not universal. Check the actual game rules and ask its moderators when a rule or entry is unclear.
- Open the specific game leaderboard. Identify the exact category, platform, version, and timing method. Do not label a run simply “the world record” if the board supports multiple categories or platforms.
- Read that board’s rules. Confirm what counts as a valid run and what evidence or verification state the board requires. Do not assume another game’s requirements apply.
- Check the current entry. Record the runner’s displayed name or requested anonymous label, run time, placement, verification state, and leaderboard link.
- Review the run video and its age. Confirm that the footage matches the entry and that it can be played in full. Recheck whether the record remains current before promoting it as current.
- Confirm the rights basis. Record who granted permission, what uses are allowed, any restrictions, and whether third-party rights or Content ID allowlisting remain unresolved.
- Keep a dated catalog. For every playlist item, keep the game and category, runner label, time, platform or version where applicable, leaderboard link, verification state, date checked, source video, and permission record.
Use on-screen labels that make the scope clear, such as the game, category, platform, runner credit, and date you last checked the leaderboard. If you cannot verify that a run remains a record, identify it as a historical run or remove the “current world record” claim until you can confirm its status.

How to set up a 24/7 YouTube livestream yourself
The DIY setup sends a playlist or other permitted video source from an encoder to a YouTube live event. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Live streaming also has age and account requirements; check YouTube Help when you set up the event because platform requirements can change.
- Prepare your video feed. Assemble the rights-cleared runs into a local playlist or another permitted source. Check that clips play in the intended order, audio is present where expected, and labels or transitions do not make misleading record claims. Keep a local archive of original source material where you have the rights to retain it. Speedrun.com recommends local recording because connections can drop and hosted videos may be muted, lost, or broken; that preservation advice does not grant permission to copy somebody else’s run.
- Create a YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event and connect it to an encoder. Keep the event’s stream key private. Link the event and incoming stream using YouTube’s setup flow; the Live Streaming API documents broadcast and stream resources separately, including scheduling, linking, and state changes.
- Configure an encoder. OBS is one possible encoder software option; the available guidance does not establish a required PC specification or one best hardware configuration. Set the encoder to send RTMPS, choose a codec and output that your computer and sustained upload connection can handle, and use a constant bitrate. YouTube’s settings guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video support and AAC or MP3 audio. Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four.
- Choose a sustainable resolution and bitrate. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, not guarantees that your connection or computer can sustain them:
Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate 720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps Choose a lower output if the encoder or connection cannot maintain the target without interruption. Test sustained upload performance rather than relying on a brief peak-speed result; leave room for normal connection variation and other network use.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Test before the public launch. Check audio, representative gameplay movement, transitions, labels, and whether the chosen bitrate remains stable. Review YouTube’s stream health messages and confirm that the event is receiving the intended feed before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
- Monitor and recover. Keep an eye on encoder output and YouTube stream health. If the feed stops, restore or switch the encoder source and confirm that video is arriving again. YouTube’s API documentation notes that a 24/7 broadcast can remain active even after its incoming video stream has stopped, so an event that still appears live is not proof that viewers are receiving the feed.
Keep the playlist and its claims current
Refresh records without losing the permission trail
When a leaderboard changes, check whether a playlist item still qualifies as a current record under the same game-specific rules. Update its label or remove it if it no longer qualifies. Keep permission records tied to the specific video and intended uses, so a change in record status does not obscure the rights basis for retaining or replaying the footage.
Preserve material you are allowed to keep
Keep local copies of your own recordings and other source material only where you have permission to retain them. A creator’s recommendation to keep an archive is about preserving run evidence, not permission to download or store another runner’s video. If a hosted source disappears or becomes muted, replace it only with material you are authorized to use.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 feed
- YouTube event is live, but viewers see no video: the broadcast can remain active after the incoming stream stops. Check encoder output, network connectivity, stream health messages, and the linked event; restart or switch the feed, then verify that YouTube is receiving video.
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: check whether the selected bitrate is sustainable on the actual upload connection and whether the computer can encode continuously. Test again at a lower resolution or bitrate if needed.
- Video plays but there is no audio: inspect the source clip and encoder audio input, confirm an accepted audio codec such as AAC or MP3, and test sound before restoring the playlist.
- A run is challenged or no longer appears as the record: check the game’s current category rules and leaderboard state. Correct the on-screen label, mark the run historical, or remove it until its status is clear.
- YouTube warns, replaces, or interrupts the feed: review the matched content and contact the relevant rights holder where appropriate. Confirm that runner permission covers the use, clear any separate music or third-party rights, and ask about Content ID allowlisting if the material is licensed.
- A hosted run is missing, muted, or broken: remove or replace it with a source you have permission to use. Do not treat a cached copy, API entry, or public listing as permission to archive or rebroadcast the video.
