For a YouTube gaming rerun in SDR, start with OBS output at 1920×1080, 60 fps, H.264, CBR, 12 Mbps video, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps—but only if your PC can encode the gameplay smoothly and your sustained upload can carry the stream reliably. If either struggles, try 1080p30 at 10 Mbps or 720p60 at 6 Mbps. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, not a guarantee that a particular PC, game, or Indian internet connection will hold them.
Choose resolution and frame rate together
The right output is the highest option that remains stable on both your encoder and your actual upload connection. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, checked on 2026-10-03, give these starting points:
| OBS output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 1920×1080 at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Detailed picture and smoother gameplay motion, if the PC and upload remain stable. |
| 1920×1080 at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Keep 1080p detail while reducing frame rate and system/network demand. |
| 1280×720 at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Lower pixel count while retaining smoother motion. |
| 1280×720 at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | Lower-demand option; check whether the game’s image remains clear enough. |
The recommendations are for H.264. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers’ devices and network conditions, so your ingest setting is not the only quality the viewer may receive. There is no single India-wide upload-speed threshold established for these settings: test from the place and time you will stream, and account for other people or devices using the connection. YouTube recommends choosing a reliable quality and testing before going live. YouTube Live encoder settings
Enter the settings in OBS
- Choose YouTube and RTMPS. In OBS, select YouTube as the service and use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Connect through your YouTube account or use the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; treat the key like a password and do not share or show it on stream.
- Set the stream resolution and FPS. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to your selected output—1920×1080 or 1280×720—and Common FPS Value to 60 or 30. The canvas resolution is the space used to arrange sources; it can remain at your game or display composition size. The output resolution is what OBS sends to YouTube. OBS Quick Start Guide
- Configure the stream encoder. Open Settings → Output and use Advanced output mode if needed to expose encoder controls. Choose an H.264 encoder, set rate control to CBR, enter the bitrate matching your selected resolution/FPS from the table, and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Hardware H.264 encoders can reduce CPU load when supported, but available choices depend on your hardware and platform; there is no universal encoder model recommendation.
- Set audio and SDR color. Use AAC stereo at 128 Kbps; YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz for stereo. For the usual SDR setup, use Rec. 709 color. Do not apply HDR settings unless the source, encoder, and stream configuration all support HDR; YouTube documents HDR as a separate HEVC workflow. YouTube Live encoder settings
Test the stream before scheduling a long rerun
- Run an unlisted test with representative gameplay movement and the same voice/game audio mix you intend to use. A static menu is not a useful test of fast motion or encoder load.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check its preview and stream health while OBS is sending the test. Listen for audio problems and watch for dropped frames or unstable video. YouTube explicitly advises testing before a live stream. YouTube Live encoder settings Monitor your live stream
- If the test is unstable, step down from 1080p60 to 1080p30 or 720p60, then repeat under comparable conditions. Also check whether other network use is competing with the stream. A speed test can help assess upload capacity, but it does not replace a test through OBS and YouTube. YouTube says: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- If you are recording locally at the same time, confirm the file is growing and that the PC remains responsive. A separate recording encoder can add system load.
Use DVR for rewind while live; use the archive after the broadcast
These are separate viewer experiences. Enable DVR in the YouTube live stream settings if viewers should pause or seek backward during the live rerun. YouTube notes DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube DVR settings

The post-stream archive is the replay after the broadcast ends. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local recording as backup; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Set the stream’s privacy and archive expectations separately from DVR. YouTube live stream archives
Keep a local backup when the replay matters
In OBS, choose MKV for local recording when you want a file that is less vulnerable to being wholly corrupted if recording stops unexpectedly. OBS recommends MKV for this reason. You can remux the completed file to another format in OBS if needed. If you configure a recording encoder at a quality other than “Same as stream,” OBS warns that the separate setting can consume extra system resources. OBS Recording Guide

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube reports an unstable stream or frames drop: lower the output option one step and retest. Confirm that sustained upload is available after accounting for network variation and other household traffic; do not rely on a brief peak reading.
- The game stutters or OBS cannot keep up: test 30 fps instead of 60 fps, especially if encoding at 1080p60 taxes the system. Try a supported hardware encoder if available, then rerun the test; encoder options vary by PC and platform.
- The stream looks soft or blocky during action: check that OBS output resolution and FPS match the intended option and that the bitrate is set to the recommended value for that H.264 profile. Fast-moving gameplay can expose limits sooner than a static scene.
- There is no stream preview: verify YouTube is the selected OBS service and that the current stream key is entered in OBS. If you regenerate the key in YouTube, update OBS with the new one. Keep keys private.
- Viewers cannot rewind while the stream is live: check the stream’s DVR setting. DVR and the post-stream archive are distinct features, and long streams have DVR/archive limits.
- The local recording is missing or unusable: confirm OBS is recording to the intended location and that the file grows during a test. MKV reduces the risk of losing the whole recording after an ungraceful stop, but it does not replace checking that recording is active.
Copyright and rerun eligibility
A technical setup does not grant permission to rebroadcast game footage, music, tournament content, or another creator’s video. Make sure you have the rights needed for the material in your rerun and review YouTube’s live-stream requirements and copyright rules before scheduling it. Reused-content and monetization decisions are separate from whether OBS successfully sends a stream; no OBS setting can guarantee monetization approval.
