How to Fix Streamlabs Stream Labels Not Updating or Launching

Find out whether your labels use Streamlabs Desktop or the standalone app, then follow the right steps to restore sources, paths, and updates.

First identify which Stream Labels setup you use: Streamlabs Desktop’s built-in Stream Label source, or the separate Stream Labels app that writes text files for OBS and other streaming software. Their data paths—and fixes—are different. For Desktop, check that an Alert Box source exists, then recreate the affected label source. For the standalone app, check its output folder, the text-source file path, and whether the app is still running.

Identify which Stream Labels setup is failing

Streamlabs Desktop has a built-in Stream Label source. The separate Stream Labels app instead generates text files that another program reads. Streamlabs’ setup guide says Desktop has built-in support, so an external app is not needed for that workflow. If you are using OBS, check whether your text source reads a generated file; that points to the standalone workflow.

What you see in your setup Likely workflow What to check
A Stream Label source added in Streamlabs Desktop Built-in Desktop source Alert Box widget source and the selected label file
A text source that reads a label file from a folder Standalone Stream Labels app Whether the app is running and the file path matches its output folder

Diagnose the relevant workflow before changing folders or sources. A built-in source does not rely on the standalone app’s output directory.

Fix Stream Labels in Streamlabs Desktop

  1. Confirm the Alert Box source exists. In the scene’s Sources list, check for an Alert Box widget source. Streamlabs says this is required for built-in Stream Labels to work. You can hide the Alert Box source if you do not want it visible in the stream.
  2. Recreate the affected label source. In Sources, remove the stale Stream Label source. Add a new source, choose Stream Label, and select the relevant file from its dropdown. Allow time for it to refresh.
  3. Restart and sign back in if needed. If the replacement source still fails, log out of Streamlabs Desktop, restart the application, and log back in. If the issue persists, try running Streamlabs Desktop as administrator.

These are the documented Desktop troubleshooting steps; the symptoms alone do not establish one universal cause. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide recommends recreating the source before restarting and signing back in.

Fix the standalone app and its text files

Use this sequence if Stream Labels writes files to a folder and OBS or another program displays those files as text sources.

  1. Remove the old sources and folders. Remove the affected text sources from your streaming software, then remove the old Stream Labels output folder and the %appdata%Roamingstreamlabels folder. This resets the old file path rather than leaving sources pointed at stale files.
  2. Reinstall and choose an output directory. Install the latest Stream Labels version from Streamlabs, sign in, and select an output directory.
  3. Recreate the text sources against the new path. In OBS or your other streaming software, add text sources that point to the intended label files in the output directory you just selected. In OBS without the Streamlabs plugin, each source must point to the correct file, and the separate Stream Labels app must remain running for real-time file updates.
  4. Wait for the refresh and check token capitalization. Streamlabs says standalone files update about once every 60 seconds; this is the vendor’s stated interval, not a guarantee for every configuration. Tokens are case-sensitive. Do not hand-edit generated files: the app overwrites them. See the Streamlabs troubleshooting guide.
  5. Check security software only if files are missing or stale. Antivirus interference is one possible cause, not a diagnosis. If you find that security software is blocking Stream Labels, add an exception for the app. The documented guidance does not identify a particular product or setting to change.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The label is stale in Streamlabs Desktop

  • Confirm there is an Alert Box widget source, even if it is hidden.
  • Delete and recreate the Stream Label source, choosing the intended file from the dropdown.
  • If it remains stale, log out, restart Streamlabs Desktop, sign in again, and try administrator mode if needed.

The label is stale in OBS

  • Check the text source’s file path against the output directory selected in the standalone app.
  • Confirm Stream Labels is running if OBS does not use the Streamlabs plugin.
  • Allow about 60 seconds for a file refresh before treating it as stuck; check token capitalization and avoid editing the generated file.

The app will not launch or the file is absent

  • For the standalone workflow, reset the old output folder and %appdata%Roamingstreamlabels folder, reinstall the latest app, sign in, and select a fresh output directory.
  • If files still are not created or updated, check whether antivirus software is interfering. Add an exception only if you establish that interference.
  • If the applicable documented steps do not resolve the problem, contact Streamlabs support and describe whether you use Desktop’s built-in source or the standalone app, the symptom, and the file path or source involved.

It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
