Keep the VPS running for the broadcast, monitor the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and stop the encoder and end the event when you are finished.
What you need before you start
- A gaming VOD file stored somewhere the VPS can read, such as its local disk or mounted storage.
- A Linux VPS whose CPU can handle your chosen FFmpeg encoding settings and whose network can sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate for the full broadcast. There is no universal minimum VPS size: check your provider’s CPU allocation, traffic limits, network capacity and policies for long-running processes.
- An FFmpeg build with the encoders and RTMPS protocol support you plan to use.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room and an encoder stream you can use.
This workflow sends an existing file as a live encoder feed. It does not capture a game running on the VPS or turn a camera feed into a stream.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream using the controls available for your channel.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS ingest address when available and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which FFmpeg describes as RTMP over a secure SSL connection.
- Treat the key as a credential. YouTube describes it as like your stream’s password and address. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot or shared log. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings.
- Choose the output mode before writing the command. Match codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current encoder settings table. The figures vary by codec and mode; YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that your VPS connection can sustain either rate.
YouTube recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. For a fixed 30 fps output, a two-second GOP corresponds to 60 frames. Consult YouTube’s current table for the exact bitrate and mode you intend to send rather than applying a value from a different resolution, frame rate or codec.
Inspect the VOD and VPS capabilities
Before streaming, verify the input path and inspect the file’s streams. For example, run ffprobe /path/to/gameplay-vod.mp4 if ffprobe is available with your FFmpeg installation. Check whether the file has a video stream, an audio stream, multiple audio tracks, and the frame rate and dimensions you expect. The example command below maps the first video and first audio stream; it must be changed if the file differs.

Also confirm that the installed FFmpeg build includes the selected encoder (the example uses libx264) and can output to your chosen RTMPS endpoint. Software encoding consumes VPS CPU; increasing frame size or frame rate, or choosing a slower x264 preset, can increase that demand. Check sustained outbound capacity and any data-transfer limits against the selected bitrate for the entire run. No fixed CPU core count or bandwidth margin applies to every VPS.
Run FFmpeg at live speed
Use -re when reading a file for a live stream so FFmpeg reads it at its native rate rather than sending the file as fast as it can. The following is a starting template, not a tested universal command. Replace every placeholder and adapt it to the source file, YouTube mode, installed encoders and stream-specific address.

If there is no audio, remove the audio mapping and audio encoder options; if there are multiple tracks, deliberately select the one you want. If the file’s codecs or tracks need different handling, adapt the command instead of assuming this template will work unchanged. The example uses H.264 video and AAC audio; YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists H.265 and AV1 video options, but your FFmpeg build and the chosen stream settings must support the encoder you use.

The example’s -r and -g values must agree with your chosen output frame rate and keyframe interval. For example, at 30 fps a 60-frame GOP represents two seconds. Set the video bitrate and rate-control buffer for the selected YouTube mode; the placeholder buffer is not a universal value. Do not leave template placeholders in a command you run.
A real stream key in a shell command may be retained in shell history or exposed in process and service logs. For a production setup, provide it through a protected secret source and restrict file permissions. Never publish the real key as part of a script or troubleshooting screenshot.
Preview, monitor and end the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection or encoding errors.
- Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming feed preview. Check the stream-health messages; YouTube can report issues including low bitrate, missing audio or video, long keyframe intervals and unsupported codecs.
- Start the broadcast from the control room if the event is not configured to start automatically. A connected encoder feed and a public broadcast are not necessarily the same state.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube Studio and stop FFmpeg. Check that the event has ended before shutting down the VPS.
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer based on that guidance alone.

Decide whether to loop the VOD or stream it once
The command above plays the file once. If your plan is to repeat a single file continuously, FFmpeg supports input looping with -stream_loop -1; put it before the input option, as in ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/gameplay-vod.mp4 .... Test the resulting stream and its ending-to-beginning transition before relying on it. A loop is still a live broadcast that needs an active encoder and a VPS connection, and longer runtimes make capacity, monitoring and YouTube policy checks more important.
If you want several videos in a sequence, prepare and test a playlist workflow rather than assuming the single-file command handles it. Confirm that the selected files have compatible streams and that the resulting output continues to meet YouTube’s encoder requirements.

Copyright, reused content and viewer expectations
Having a file on your VPS does not establish that you have permission to broadcast everything in it. Review rights for gameplay footage, music, cutscenes, overlays and other material, including material captured from a game. YouTube’s copyright and monetization outcomes can depend on the content and rights involved; a successful encoder connection is not approval for the VOD or a guarantee of monetization. Check YouTube’s policies for your situation, and use the copyright safety checklist as a practical review aid.

Replaying prerecorded material as a live event also does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content or monetization requirements. Consider whether the broadcast offers original value and whether viewers can tell what they are watching; do not describe prerecorded gameplay as a live player session. Check current YouTube policy before planning a monetized channel around repeated VODs.
Latency: choose for the broadcast, not by habit
YouTube explains that lower latency can reduce delivery delay, but may increase buffering or affect smoothness. A prerecorded gaming VOD usually has little need for immediate viewer interaction, so normal latency is a sensible starting point unless real-time chat interaction is central to the event.

Estimate transfer time and compare the setup cost
VPS streaming costs depend on the provider, selected resources, traffic allowance and runtime; no particular provider or plan is established here. Before choosing a server, compare its sustained outbound capacity and traffic limits with the output you expect to send.
