YouTube supplies the live-stream connection and settings; the playback system must separately support continuous or scheduled file playback. Before broadcasting, confirm live access, clear permissions and music rights, and label the tours as prerecorded.
What you need for a continuous tour channel
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the requirements.
- Recorded tour files you have the right to show, with property and identifiable-person permissions in place.
- A playback and encoding system that can play the files in sequence and repeat them. YouTube documents how an encoder sends a feed, but does not certify a particular app or device for looping prerecorded files.
- A reliable power and internet connection for a computer-based setup, or a suitable hardware encoder, plus a way to check stream health and recover if playback or the connection stops.
YouTube supports both software and hardware encoders; its guidance says professional-grade hardware encoders are recommended for higher-production-value events, not required. Choose a system by verifying file playback and looping, restart behavior, remote monitoring, supported YouTube settings, and operating cost. YouTube’s live-streaming tips describe encoder options.
Prepare the tour playlist and rights
Arrange files for a useful continuous schedule
Put the tour recordings in the order you want viewers to see them. Test the transition from the final file back to the first, including audio levels and any blank frames. If you want tours to play at set times or with breaks, verify that the chosen system supports scheduling; do not assume that a YouTube stream setting creates a video playlist or repeat function.
Make it clear that the footage is prerecorded
Use the title, description, and on-screen graphics to tell viewers that the channel is showing recorded tours. Do not present recorded footage as a live property visit or imply that an agent is currently available on camera if that is not true.

Clear property, people, and media rights
YouTube places responsibility for rights to livestreamed content on the channel operator. Confirm permission to show each property and any identifiable people, and clear music, photographs, graphics, and other third-party material in the recordings. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and its guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Enable livestreaming in advance. Verify the channel and check that it has no current livestream restriction. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the stream’s privacy and other event settings. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers controls such as latency and DVR. When DVR is enabled, viewers can pause or rewind the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Use the connection details shown for that stream in Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in a public screen capture, description, or message.
- Configure the encoder and playback. Select a resolution and frame rate your source and upload connection can sustain, then set the playlist to repeat. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the exact combination you choose.
- Start a test and check the preview. Confirm the correct tour appears, the audio is audible and synchronized, and the stream is accessible to the intended audience from the channel or watch page. Check on a mobile device as well.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Watch the encoder and YouTube stream-health indicators after launch. Continuous operation depends on the playback system, power, internet connection, and monitoring; YouTube’s stream settings alone do not guarantee uninterrupted playback.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder when you intend to end it. If you need a YouTube archive, keep the stream under 12 hours: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and a longer broadcast should not be assumed to archive in full.
Encoder settings for a 1080p30 feed
For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum video bitrate and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. These figures apply to that codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s table for other configurations rather than carrying them over unchanged.

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, verified in 2026. Test using tour footage with representative motion and audio, and ensure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. A higher configured bitrate cannot compensate for an unstable connection. If you use a different resolution, frame rate, codec, or audio setup, refer to the full YouTube settings table.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
The stream does not appear in Live Control Room
- Confirm that livestreaming is enabled and the channel meets the eligibility requirements; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Check that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the event you created, and that the key has not been changed or copied incorrectly.
The preview is missing or shows the wrong tour
- Confirm the encoder is sending the intended playback output and that the playlist is pointed at the correct files.
- Check the playlist order, repeat setting, and transitions locally before relying on unattended playback.
Video or audio quality is unstable
- Check stream health and compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Test the upload connection under realistic conditions. If it cannot sustain the selected bitrate, reduce the video configuration to one it can support.
- Verify audio level, channel configuration, and synchronization in the preview; use YouTube’s listed stereo settings as a baseline where applicable.
The broadcast stops unexpectedly
- Check for a playback-system crash, power interruption, or internet drop; each can end the encoder feed independently of YouTube.
- Verify whether your software or hardware can restart playback and reconnect to YouTube after an interruption. Do not assume loop support also means automatic recovery.
- Use remote monitoring or a regular check-in plan if the channel must remain on air unattended.
The archive is incomplete or absent
Check the broadcast duration first. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on a full automatic archive for a longer continuous stream. Plan a separate recording or a shorter broadcast if you need a complete copy.
