To rotate product demo footage on a YouTube Live stream from Windows, use FFmpeg’s transpose filter for a 90-degree turn or its rotate filter for another angle, pace the file input in real time, encode to YouTube’s live-streaming requirements, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. For a playlist, prepare and test a concat list separately; looping a single input does not automatically guarantee that a multi-file playlist repeats as intended.
Prepare and inspect your video files
Install a current FFmpeg Windows build from a trusted distributor. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and confirm that FFmpeg is available:
ffmpeg -versionInspect each source file before choosing the rotation and output settings. For example:
ffmpeg -i "C:Videosdemo.mp4"Read the reported video dimensions, frame rate, codecs, and whether an audio stream is present. These details affect the output profile and whether multiple files can be joined directly. There is no universal command that can infer the right orientation, framing, audio policy, or compatible settings for footage it has not inspected.

Choose the rotation filter
Rotate by 90 degrees
Use transpose when the footage needs a quarter-turn. For example, transpose=dir=clock rotates clockwise; use transpose=dir=cclock for counterclockwise rotation. Check the resulting picture rather than guessing from the camera or phone’s orientation metadata.
Rotate by another angle
FFmpeg’s rotate filter accepts an angle in radians. Positive angles rotate clockwise and negative angles counterclockwise. A non-quarter-turn can leave empty corners around the picture, so choose output dimensions and a background or crop deliberately. The filter does not decide whether your product should remain fully visible or fill the frame.

Build a file input or playlist
Loop one file
FFmpeg’s -re reads an input at its native frame rate, which is useful when sending a local file as a live feed. -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping of an input. They serve different purposes: one paces playback, while the other repeats input. Test the combination with your file and build before relying on it for a live event.
Sequence multiple files
The concat demuxer can read a text file containing the paths to a sequence of videos. A simple list using relative paths and portable filenames looks like this:

file 'demo-02.mp4'Save it as list.txt beside the videos. The concat demuxer’s safe-path check is enabled by default and rejects paths that do not meet its relative portable-path rules. If you need absolute Windows paths or filenames containing spaces, follow FFmpeg’s concat-list syntax carefully and test the list; do not disable safe mode reflexively. Files may also need compatible stream layouts, codecs, and timestamps. Confirm the order, transitions, audio alignment, and repeat behavior with the exact playlist you plan to use.
Set up YouTube Live ingest
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- In the stream settings, copy the destination URL and stream key for that stream. Use the RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides; do not copy a placeholder URL from an example.
- Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not put it in screenshots, source control, or public scripts. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update your encoder.
RTMPS encrypts the connection. If FFmpeg reports an SSL or connection error, check that you copied the RTMPS endpoint rather than an ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube’s connection troubleshooting also advises checking port 443 when the URL is correct but SSL errors continue.

Encode to a YouTube-compatible live profile
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Choose resolution and frame rate to suit the source, and select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends running a speed test and prioritizing a stable bitrate. It transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats.
Because source dimensions, frame rate, audio, and rotation differ from file to file, treat a command as a template rather than a guaranteed working preset. Before assembling yours, decide on the rotation filter, output geometry and frame rate, audio handling, encoder settings, and how the URL and key will be supplied. Keep the stream key out of any command or log you share publicly.

Test, preview, and start the stream
- Run a private or unlisted test with footage that has similar movement and audio to the planned stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for the correct orientation, framing, transitions, and sound, and review stream health before making the event public.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live when ready. Start and stop behavior can vary with stream settings such as auto-start and auto-stop.
- Keep monitoring stream health while it runs. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The picture is still sideways: Try the opposite
transposedirection and inspect the output. The filter does not determine the intended orientation from metadata. - Portrait footage has bars or is cropped: Rotation changes frame geometry. Decide whether to preserve the portrait composition, fit it inside a landscape canvas, or crop to a chosen output. Check that the product remains visible.
- The playlist ends instead of repeating:
-stream_loop -1documents infinite looping for an input, but a concat construction may behave differently. Test the complete list’s repeat behavior rather than assuming the single-file option loops the playlist. - The concat list is rejected or errors: Check list syntax, paths, stream compatibility, and timestamps. The demuxer’s default safe-path validation rejects paths outside its relative portable-character policy.
- YouTube reports a connection or SSL error: Copy the RTMPS URL from the selected stream’s Live Control Room settings, verify the encoder can use RTMPS, and check port 443 if the URL is correct and SSL errors persist.
- The stream key was exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder configuration.
