How to Monitor CPU and Memory on an Oracle Cloud YouTube Streaming VPS

Check CPU and memory with OCI charts and Linux tools, then baseline a representative stream and alert on the conditions that matter to your VPS.

Use OCI Monitoring for cloud-side charts and alarms, and Linux tools over SSH for a live view of what the VPS and its processes are doing. For CPU and memory charts together, enable the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin and check the oci_computeagent namespace. The separate oci_vmi_resource_utilization namespace provides hypervisor-measured CPU, not the documented memory metric. Watch a representative stream, establish your own baseline, then set alarms for workload conditions you have actually observed.

Choose the right view for the question

Approach What it shows Requirement and timing Best use
OCI agent-based metrics: oci_computeagent In-guest CpuUtilization, MemoryUtilization, LoadAverage, and MemoryAllocationStalls. Compute Instance Monitoring plugin enabled and running; metrics are emitted every 60 seconds. CPU and memory history, plus cloud-side alarms.
OCI agentless metrics: oci_vmi_resource_utilization Hypervisor-measured CpuUtilization. No Oracle Cloud Agent monitoring tools required; the metric table lists 3–4 minute granularity. A cloud-side CPU view when you do not need the documented agent-based memory metric.
Linux tools over SSH Current OS and process-level view, including memory and virtual-memory activity. Log in to the instance; utility availability depends on the image and installed packages. Investigating which process is busy or whether the host is under pressure now.

These views are complementary rather than interchangeable. Oracle says agent-based and agentless CPU metrics are collected differently, so their readings and time resolution may differ. The agentless metric described here is CPU-only; use the agent namespace when you need OCI’s documented memory metric.

Check CPU and memory in OCI Monitoring

Enable the agent metrics needed for memory

  1. In the OCI Console, open the compute instance you use for streaming.
  2. Under Resources, select Oracle Cloud Agent or the instance’s plugin controls, and enable the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin. The exact console layout can vary.
  3. Confirm Oracle Cloud Agent and the plugin are running. The instance also needs a public IP or a service gateway to send metric data to OCI Monitoring.
  4. Return to the instance, select Metrics under Resources, and choose oci_computeagent.
  5. Inspect the charts for CpuUtilization and MemoryUtilization. Data on the charts confirms Monitoring is receiving those metrics.

Oracle documents the agent metrics at a 60-second cadence: data points are sampled every ten seconds and batched six at a time. MemoryUtilization is the percentage of used pages in the instance. The namespace also includes one-minute average system load and memory allocation stalls; a stall count can prompt investigation, but it is not a percentage of RAM.

Use the agentless CPU view when appropriate

In the instance’s Metrics view, select oci_vmi_resource_utilization to see hypervisor-sourced CpuUtilization. It does not require the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin and can provide a cloud-side CPU view without Oracle Cloud Agent monitoring tools. Oracle’s metric table lists 3–4 minute granularity for this CPU metric. The Oracle documentation also notes that metric granularity and resolution differ by namespace, so do not compare this series as though it were identical to the 60-second agent-based series.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Inspect the VPS from an SSH session

Start with a live view and a memory summary

  • Run top to see changing system and process activity. Sort or inspect the process list to identify what is consuming CPU or memory.
  • Run free for a memory summary, including used and available memory and swap figures.
  • Run vmstat 1 to display virtual-memory and system statistics at one-second intervals; stop it with Ctrl+C.

Some slim OCI images may not include free, top, or vmstat; Oracle Linux documentation identifies procps-ng as a package that provides these tools. Check the package availability for your actual image before installing it.

Add processor and activity reports if useful

On Oracle Linux, mpstat reports processor statistics and sar records system activity. Oracle Linux 9 documentation identifies these utilities in the sysstat package. Check your image and package manager for availability rather than assuming every OCI image has them installed.

Build a baseline during a representative stream

  1. Record a quiet-period reading so you can distinguish normal idle activity from stream-related load.
  2. Observe startup, when the streaming process begins, and note any short-lived spikes separately from sustained use.
  3. Collect readings during a typical sustained stream using OCI charts and SSH tools. Include process activity when investigating a high reading.
  4. Repeat observations at comparable times and conditions. Use the ordinary pattern you observe—not a generic percentage—as your reference for later spikes or changes.

Oracle recommends measuring typical operation first so later memory shortages, resource spikes, or performance changes are easier to recognize. There is no universal safe CPU percentage or free-memory floor established for a YouTube streaming VPS here, and no workload-specific CPU or RAM requirement is established. Your instance shape, image, workload, and operating conditions matter.

Set an OCI alarm and verify notifications

OCI Monitoring evaluates alarm status once per minute and can send a message to configured destinations, including OCI Notifications or Streaming, depending on your configuration. An alarm can help surface sustained pressure when you are not watching the console; it does not replace checking the host when a problem occurs.

  1. In OCI Monitoring, create an alarm for the relevant metric and instance, such as agent-based CPU or memory utilization.
  2. Choose a trigger based on the baseline and operational conditions you observed. Oracle’s cited guidance does not prescribe a YouTube-streaming threshold.
  3. Configure the notification destination and message, then confirm the alarm is enabled.
  4. Verify the notification path with a suitable test or observed trigger, and adjust the condition if it creates noise or misses a meaningful change.

Troubleshoot missing charts or concerning readings

  • No agent-based charts or no recent data: Check that Oracle Cloud Agent is installed where required, the Compute Instance Monitoring plugin is enabled and running, and the instance has a public IP or service gateway for sending metric data.
  • CPU appears in one namespace but memory does not: The cited agentless namespace supplies CPU utilization; enable and check oci_computeagent for the documented memory chart.
  • CPU charts disagree or update at different rates: Check the namespace and collection method. Agent-based CPU is emitted every 60 seconds, while the agentless CPU table lists 3–4 minute granularity; Oracle says the methods differ.
  • A memory allocation stall count appears: Treat it as a clue to inspect memory pressure and host activity, not as a direct reading of RAM use.
  • A utility command is missing: Check which packages are installed on the image. Oracle Linux identifies procps-ng for free, top, and vmstat in some slim images, and sysstat for mpstat and sar.
  • An alarm does not notify you: Check that the alarm is enabled, its trigger matches the intended metric and observed conditions, and its configured destination is reachable and set up correctly.
